Is it too late to suggest another alternate title? I just came up with "Annoyingly Common Mistake".

[up]I feel like that sounds more like an alternate name for Common Knowledge, but I don't object to adding it to the crowner.

Rejecting the hook request. Not only is that crowner the wrong one - one does first a "should we rename" crowner, then a "what should the name be" one - but the whole idea of a rename sounds almost like a drive-by proposal, especially for a trope with 22000+ inbounds.

[up]Should the rename proposal be skipped altogether, or is it fine for someone to make a "Should the trope be renamed?" crowner?

[up][up] Personally I don't think the number of inbound really matter facing the level of misuse here to justify the use of grandfather clause. The plain meaning of these words do not impute "obvious mistakes."

What's the problem with renaming tropes with lots of inbounds to begin with? The old name is usually kept as a redirect except in special circumstances.

I'm a little unsure of this entry on the film page

  • In some circles of fans, referring to the main character of Pirates of the Caribbean as Jack Sparrow rather than Captain Jack Sparrow will net you an angry chewing out and a lengthy lecture.

Though he holds the title of Captain and there is a Running Gag about him wanting to be referred as such, Jack Sparrow is his actual given name and he is referred to it many times, so this seems less like a factual mistake and more like Insistent Terminology.

[up]I agree that it sounds more like Insistent Terminology, especially because this is backed up in-universe.

I'm wondering if these two examples in YMMV.Fate Grand Order are being misused

  • Don't show any of the genuine genderswapped art of Astolfo to his fans. Just. Don't.

  • Referring to Fate/stay night Saber by her localized name Altria will be met with ridicule. Most fans stick with the older Arturia/Artoria.

The first seems more like a Internet Backlash while second is dealing with official translated name of a character and fans not liking it because they were use to fan translation.

[up] Neither of those examples count, the first one isn't an objective mistake and using an officially translated name over a fan translated name really isn't one either.

[up] Let’s vote on it in a crowner.

[up] The old crowner has been rejected because we're supposed to decide whether a page should be renamed or not in a different crowner and Fandom Berserk Button may have too many inbounds to be renamed.

Someone needs to make a new crowner.

I found this example page, while looking at related to wicks. FandomBerserkButton.Yuri On Ice. I know nothing about the show, so I'm not sure what stays and goes.

[up] I don't watch the show either, but that page should be cut due to almost all of the entries not fitting our definition of Fandom Berserk Button.

The only examples I think should stay are:

  • Fans have become sick and tired of people comparing Real Life skater Yuzuru Hanyu to Yuri. This is especially true when, despite them both being Japanese, Hanyu's career trajectory so far is more similar to Victor's. The last straw came when the former's Wikipedia page was vandalized to have Yuri's info in his bio.
  • There are a fair share of fans who'll get really angry if you spell Victor's name with a "k" instead of a "c" — and vice versa. Only very few fans have no gripes about either spelling.
  • Call Yuri!!! on Ice a yaoi or shounen-ai anime. We dare you. (Especially by calling it Yaoi on Ice.) This has a lot to do with the tropes generally found in the Yaoi Genre having Unfortunate Implications for actual LGBT+ people, meaning Yuri!!! on Ice appealed to a lot of them who normally dislike yaoi works.

The last one should be rewritten a bit to point out what exactly makes the anime not yaoi or shounen-ai.

The page would probably not be long enough to warrant a separate page. If so, the valid examples should be moved to the anime page.

I agree that the trope should be renamed, because the title is misleading and suggests the trope is just about things that anger fans generally, rather than objective mistakes that annoy fans.

Optimism is a duty.
