Complaining: Fandom Berserk Button

The examples section of this page is currently one of the most whiny and petulant on the wiki, as several people in the discussion page have pointed out. Originally, I believe the page was meant for common objective mistakes, but it's gotten to the point that people regularly insert thinly veiled Fan Hater gripes or Complaining about People Not Liking the Show. It's also difficult to tell whether someone is posting a genuine fandom reaction or simply has a personal axe to grind.

I think we should cut out all examples that aren't actual mistakes (e.g. calling Samus "Metroid" counts, but liking 4Kids doesn't), but if that won`t stop people, just Flame Bait tag the page.

The description states that Fandom Berserk Button is supposed to be about common mistakes or misconceptions about works that annoy fans, but many of the examples are Complaining about People Not Liking the Show or fans of a series complaining about other fans liking/disliking certain characters or installments in said series. And I don't think cleaning up the misuse is going to stop people from adding examples like those since many people seem to come to this trope for the misuse. My suggestion is to make Fandom Berserk Button Flame Bait.

If we're going to cut all the examples or make it flame bait, we may as well just cut the page. Fandom Berserk Button isn't a narrative device, so why keep a shell of it?

We could also make it in-universe only, but I'm not sure how many examples we'd find of that.

The trope's title is itself a serious problem: it's dangerously misleading - it's about misconceptions, not actual Berserk Buttons (i.e. things that make fans angry).

After the previous thread was closed and before this one was opened by a mod, I decided that I think this trope should be reclassified as Flame Bait, particularly as written now.

Edit: This would probably be the best place to say that I think it's obnoxious that so many examples have a bossy tone ("Don't do/say X", " It's Y, not Z", etc.).

Another edit: The current page image looks like it more closely fits the "actual Berserk Button" misinterpretation Albert3105 mentioned, and the Pokémon portion of it isn't even about a misconception and is purely about opinions.

Yet another edit: Now would probably be a good time to point out that the old trope name, Gannon-Banned, was taken from a satirical website about the presence of an extra N in Ganon's name in the intro for the original release of The Legend of Zelda and the continued usage of that spelling among fans, yet a lot of the current examples interpret the trope as Serious Business.

Spelling Gannon as such certainly provokes a reaction among Zelda fans, if that's what you're wondering.

Misspelled trope names dealt with... for now. Moving back to the Understatement project soon?

[up]It does, but the site that provided the old trope name doesn't take itself seriously.

Edit: To clarify, my other post was referring to the term "Gannon-Banned" and not the (mis)spelling the term is referring to when I said a lot of current examples of the trope treat it as Serious Business. The website the term comes from is satirical, even if some fans react to the use of the "Gannon" spelling of Ganon's name in a more serious way.

idea Perform an Example Sectionectomy by disallowing examples on the trope itself, and flag it as Flame Bait.

[up] You already suggested that.

Hell No.

I'm firmly against whipping out the chainsaw because we already do that to much for my tastes. Move it to the Darth Wiki if need be but leave it.

Most of the entries on the page are more Fandom Insistent Terminology and spelling more than anything. Something that is a thing but honestly I would say split those off into Fandom Insistent Terminology and see exactly whats left, which I don't think would be much.

My suggestion is to make Fandom Berserk Button Flame Bait but still allow on-page examples, just like we do with Flame Bait pages such as Character Derailment and Periphery Hatedom.

Either it's own trope or own sub-section.

If there's that many examples around the same Berserk Button it means there's a pattern to be troped there.

I prefer both performing an Example Sectionectomy and making this Flame Bait.

Can't we just reformulate the entire trope into either "Misconception Trigger" or "Fandom Flame Bait"?

But yeah, the trope title is EXTREMELY misleading. "Fandom Berserk Button" should be supposed to be about things that triggers certain fandoms, not this entire confustion.

For the existing trope, I'd suggest changing its title.

I think we're gonna need a wick check. At the bare minimum it will prove a rename is necessary, but it could also be helpful for showing if it's being used for Flame Bait.

I think we can go ahead and remove examples that aren't objective mistakes, as that blatant ignores the trope description.

Apr 28th 2018 at 3:45:05 PM

I don't like the idea of performing an Example Sectionectomy, and think that cleaning up the examples could be possible.

On another note, I noticed that a few examples amount to "don't mention the franchise or non-fans will get mad at you", which sounds more like "Hatedom Berserk Button" to me. If we're looking for types of examples that should be removed, these are prime candidates.

Apr 28th 2018 at 6:37:37 PM

[up] I agree with removing examples like that at least.

If we don't do a full Example Sectionectomy, then I think we should at least remove "Hatedom Berserk Buttons" (as mentioned in [up][up]) and examples that are based purely on opinion instead of objective mistakes (which includes part of the page image, as I've previously mentioned). I'm including the various examples complaining about Dub Name Changes and Market Based Titles for official translations of foreign-language works (which I've seen a lot of on the video game page) in the latter category.

I went and removed Hatedom Berserk Button examples from the main page. In hindsight, I might have acted too early, so feel free to revert my edit if it's too problematic.

Also, what about examples concerning parts of a series that are hated by most fans? For example, saying you liked the Star Wars prequels?

I just cleaned up the Western Animation sub-page. To answer [up], this trope is supposed to be about getting facts about the work wrong pissing fans off, not about having the "wrong" opinions, so those can be cut.

Vote up names you like, vote down names you don't. Whether or not the title will actually be changed is determined with a different kind of crowner (the Single Proposition crowner). This one just collects and ranks alternative titles.
