Something that's been bothering me. It was said that the qualification for becoming a Demon Slaying Corps Pillar was that you had to slay an Upper Moon. If that was truly the case why hasn't Tanjiro been approached for it? He's killed half of the upper moons.

Lower Moon, actually. The Uppers hadn't been touched in 113 years.

Plus the Pillar positions were all filled, except for Sounds when Uzui retired, and Tanjiro wasn't a Breath of Sound user, so he wouldn't have been considered.

That'd make sense except;

Shihan was a former pillar, used breath of lightning. If the pillar positions had to be filled by the matching breath then there'd currently be a breath of lightning pillar.

Though the actual reason is probably because, until very recently, Tanjiro used Breath of Water and hadn't switched to the Dance of the Fire God/Breath of the Sun so they couldn't double up on pillars.

That being said Tanjiro's killed more of the moons than anyone else. The fact no one has even talked about him becoming a pillar, especially among the pillars (there was ample time during the demon mark training arc for it), is preeeeeeeeeeeeetty silly.

I don't think the Pillars have empty slots they need to fill in. Like, I doubt there are enough Breath of Love users to succeed Mitsuri, if she's not the only one in the first place. Likewise, having certain predefined slots would prevent Inosuke to become a pillar since his Breath of the Beast is likely self-taught.

Mhm. There are a bunch of styles that don't have corresponding Pillars at the moment; Fire, Sound, Thunder, Beast and Sun are just the ones we've seen first hand, and I believe we've heard of others. And, like, why couldn't they double up, if it so happened that they were multiple unusually strong users of a single style?

Like surely the reason all the current Pillars use different styles is so that they can feel distinct from each other in combat. More the audience's benefit than the character's benefit, y'know? But I don't see any reason to believe it has to be like that, in-universe.

I swear I think I’ve witnessed the dumbest complaint about the show being that the colored swords are somehow an unnecessary unneeded element that actively detracts from Tanjiro’s training & that it would have instead been better if everyone in Japan like as civilians got demon hunter training.

And some people are seriously trying to argue that.

[up] Oh hey, that's me! (At least, I assume so, because no one else keeps getting dragged into this honestly-not-that-important offshoot of the argument about whether Nezuko getting hypnotized detracts from the story.) You could at least have the decency to tell me I'm stupid directly, instead of trying to get other people to help gang up on me with no context. But I guess this is what we're doing now.

By the way, I never said that second part. I said what would make the most narrative-logic sense would be if there weren't any specialized swords at all; and that if we accept the fact that there are special swords, then it's hard to explain why normal people don't have them, at least for self-defense. My entire point was that the grueling difficulty of the training was a reasonable explanation for why most people cannot hunt demons, and adding magic swords to the mix weakens that. Which is the exact opposite of saying that everyone should go do Training from Hell. I don't know if you misunderstood, or misrepresented me on purpose, but there you go.

The irony of all this is that, again, I really don't think this is that big of a deal, beyond its similarity to the Nezuko thing, but goddamn if the fans of this show aren't willing to accept that my opinion isn't totally illogical, even if they disagree with it. Every time I try to explain my thoughts on this, they are completely misconstrued. So, hell, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's hardwired into people's brains that supernatural enemies require supernatural weapons, and I'm missing that particular set of neurons. Wouldn't be the first time something like that happened.

You said "the dumbest complaint." Singular. So either you meant me, or some other specific person. Not "a general thing."

In any case, I'm just going to have to drop this show before I start questioning my sanity, and/or everyone else's.

The only ability the sword have is changing color to reflect the user skill and personality. Also the fact that they even if you have the magic sword, it will do nothing if you can't cut the neck of a demon with the sword. So to use one still require a lots of skill and training.

Episode 8… Bullying a Dragon has never hurt so much. Ouch. But it seems like even Muzan doesn't entirely control his demonic impulses…

And now we have demons other than Nezuko who kept their humanity. A bit too much Parrot Exposition and Yushirô's gushing thoughts on Tamayo were a tad distracting, but Tamayo's introduction was otherwise quite solid. The gorgeous art and sound direction once again helps a lot.

So back at the exam there were four survivors seen, but then they say that there were five survivors. Does the fifth ever show up? And do they explain why they weren't around at the end ceremony?

Trying to recall if this was the case because it came from around midseries and I don't rightly remember but iirc ether the wind or the mist pillar is the other final selection survivor from Tanjiro's group.

Nezuko continues to be the best character. She can just lurk in the background and still be the most interesting part of a scene.

Just catching up with episode 8 now, and man, Muzan has screen presence. Dude doesn't fuck around at all, and I imagine we haven't seen the half of it yet.

Though I have to say, so far this show appears mostly to be 'Tanjiro deals with older Demon Slayers half-assing their work and leaving really nasty demons alive'.

It's been fun.

Being fair, Doma being alive in the next ten minutes is way worse to the prospect of his old age.

Y'know, weirdly enough, Inosuke showing up makes me feel like this fight is less winnable than it was when it was just Kanao. Like, she was kind of an unknown quantity because we'd never really seen her fight before, so even when she appeared to be on the back foot, I could buy that she still had something up her sleeve. But now that Inosuke's here and doing about as well as Kanao, maybe better...

See, Inosuke is a known quantity. And not one I can see standing up to Doma in the long term. So if Kanao is just around the same strength as him, I don't see them winning this without more help. But on the bright side, there are plenty of Pillars who need climactic fights and not a huge number of opponents for them to face, so.

I just realized that each member of Tanjiro's generation has one of the senses enhanced.

Episode 9!

…The fact that Nezuko recognizes Tamayo and Yushirô as allies even though they're demons makes Urokodaki's sleep-brainwashing even more pointless in retrospect.

But the real star of this episode is the sound-effects department. The hits, the slashes, the crunches… god it's so satisfying.
