Name: Kaito Shinkai (Inspiration: Kraken)

Gender: Male

Age: 27

Species: Octopus Faunus.

Appearance: Stands at 6 feet and has a lean build. He has pale skin, shaggy shoulder-length red hair underneath a dark green bandanna, and aquamarine eyes with oddly-shaped irises. Four large tentacles the same color as his hair sprout from his back (each tentacle is roughly as thick as his arms). Wears an classic doctor’s coat over a red t-shirt, dark green pants and sandals.

Personality: As the resident doctor of Shade Academy, Kaito carries a curt, professional demeanour to his patients, prioritizing their physical and mental well-being. To colleagues and acquaintances, he becomes more expressive, showing a warmer- though sarcastic and sharp-tongued- character. A firm believer in human-faunus equality, Kaito is against the current White Fang, believing that their acts of violence will only serve to deepen the rift between humans and Faunus. Despite his role as a doctor, Kaito is surprisingly willing to kill if need be, arguing is that he is also a Huntsman, and a huntsman who refuses to kill is as good as dead.

Background: Born in Mistral to a doctor and a huntsman, Kaito learned how to heal people as he was growing up by helping out and observing in the family clinic. When he was old enough, Kaito was enrolled into the local Primer academy in order to lean how to become a huntsman. Due to being a faunus- and an unusual one at that- Kaito was often the target of his peers' verbal barbs, and they only increased when he unlocked his semblance, but he did his best to endure it, choosing to vent his aggresssion on the Grimm and in the sparring ring.

  • Kaito went on to study in Haven, hoping to be a field Medic. In addition to his studies, The youn faunus also worked part-time in the Academy clinic to gain experience and knowledge. Kairo graduated from Haven when was 21, and obtaines his Medical license four years later. It was then that Shade Academy offered him a position as Academy Doctor.

Weapons/Equipment:

  • Kaito's primary weapon is Shigure, a pair of bladed tonfa that convert into heavy machine guns. In tonfa form, the blades can retract info the shaft for blunt strikes.

  • Kaito's secondary weapon is Raiju, a pair of Tanto swords that he wields using his tentacles. Each short sword holds a measure of elemental dust to augment their attacks, and a gauge on the spine of the blade shows how much dust remains. Kaito can reload a blade's dust by sheathing it.

  • Medkit A medical kit made to use out on the field.

Semblance: Kaito's semblance is Toxin, which allows Kaito to produce a range of toxins with varying degrees of lethality within his body, which he can then release via his skin or spit. Given his status as doctor, He makes a conscious effort to use less-lethal or slower acting toxins in combat, and for medicinal purposes otherwise. He must also learn about new ones he encounters (either by studying them, or in direr cases, tasting them, as a side effect of his Semblance is high poison resistance).

Non-combat abilities:

  • As the doctor of Shade Academy, Kaito has extensive knowledge of medicine and first aid, as well as human and faunus biology.

  • Brews a mean cup of coffee.

  • Pianist.

  • Highly flexible- partially due to his faunus half, and able to fit himself in smaller spaces.

  • Can’t get drunk thanks to his semblance.

  • Name: Professor Titania Tippetarius, NPC faculty member, librarian at Shade Academy

  • Gender: Female (assigned male at birth)

  • Age: 42

  • Species: Human

  • Appearance: A fortysomething woman with green eyes, broad shoulders, and light brown hair flowing down her back, wearing a flowing titanium gray dress.

  • Personality: Titania is a calm, rational, dignified sort with a sarcastic streak a mile long and occasional moments of youthful mischievousness. All of her golems see her as a mother figure, which she reciprocates to a degree, and she tries to keep them out of harm’s way by mostly using them as research assistants. She takes her position as librarian very seriously, and has been known to semi-jokingly refer to herself as the library’s benevolent dictator.

  • Background:

    • Titania was an orphan raised in Atlas (which is not known for its great foster care). She was bright for her age, creating her first golem, Jack Gourd, at the age of twelve, and it was more or less expected by everyone that she would apply to the Academy as soon as she was old enough, and she did. Unexpectedly, she dropped out halfway through her third year.

    • On her own, Titania began transitioning, and changed her career path from hunting to law. After several years working at an Atlesian law firm, she relocated to Vacuo, interested in how law operated in such a dangerous place.

    • As it turned out, the answer was “occasionally fatally.” After a Grimm attack led to John Gourd almost dying, Titania decided she needed to keep him safe. She applied for the position of librarian at Shade, and she’s worked there for the last ten years.

  • Weapons/Equipment: Pastoria: A staff that can be converted into a crossbow.

  • Semblance: Awaken: Titania can bring constructs resembling living things to life, such as statues. She prefers to do this with golems she makes herself, the most notable of which is the aforementioned John Gourd.

  • Non-combat abilities: Extremely knowledgeable about law in Vacuo, Atlas, and other areas of Remnant.

  • Name: John Gourd

  • Gender: Male

  • Age: 30

  • Species: Specially-animated scarecrow

  • Appearance: A somewhat lumpy straw-filled body with a squash for a head and a painted-on face, wearing overalls, an old shirt, and rain boots.

  • Personality: John is...not the freshest pumpkin in the patch, to say the least. However, he is unerringly honest, hard-working, and well-intentioned, not to mention steadfastly loyal to his “mother.”

  • Background:

    • Thirty years ago, twelve-year-old Titania Tippetarius took a scarecrow, gave it a squash for a head, and brought it to life. She christened him John Gourd, and John became her most trusted friend. John accompanied her to Atlas Academy, then law, then Vacuo. When Titania became history professor at Shade, John became groundskeeper.

  • Weapons/Equipment: Various gardening tools, his favorite of which is a very heavy shovel.

  • Non-combat abilities: Excellent gardener.

Name: Ash Stevenson

Gender: Male

Age: 22

Species: Human

Appearance: Ash is relatively tall, standing at about 5'10". He has a broad figure, but he is not visibly ripped, nor is he massive in any real way, just a bit above average. He sports a rocking Bald Of Awesome, and he has a bit of a silvery-grey goatee growing as well. He is usually wearing a Badass Suit, composed of a grey blazer, black slacks, a white shirt and a blue tie. He will occasionally accompany this with Cool Shades, either resting on his head or over his eyes.

Personality: As is a really laid-back type of guy, and serves as the carefree, energetic foil to some of the more serious and straightforward older staff. He is definitely a Deadpan Snarker, as well as just a normal jokester too. He is not afraid to express his thoughts and feelings, and can be a little short-tempered at times. He takes his job as Assistant Dean seriously enough, but he likes to have fun with the job too. He has a streak of arrogance to him due to his consistent high marks and skill, but he understands when he's beaten. That still doesn't mean he's not the best, though. Don't get him wrong. You know, losing happens even to the best of us. Which includes him.

Background: Ash is the son of two unnamed Shade Academy alumni that swore off the hunter's life once he was born, instead deciding to train him in combat and Semblance, eventually letting him get his own weapon to train with as well. When he was 15, his parents sent him to Shade Academy and used their pull to get him in, where he learned about hunting and other such things. Due to his prior training, he naturally excelled, and he developed a slight streak of arrogance. He grew attached to the school, and once he graduated, he decided to stay on as a staff member, slowly getting promoted over a few years until he reached the level of Assistant Dean, where he was content with staying at. Beacon's fall didn't affect Ash too terribly much, but it did put him on guard, ready to take up arms for the school he loves.

Weapons/Equipment:

Weapon: Boom Schtick: A hybrid of a slug-round shotgun and a chainsaw, the Boom Schtick shoots out powerful slug rounds which can be further augmented by Dust, and has an extendable bayonet-esque chainsaw on the bottom of the barrel. The barrel is also retractable, effectively turning it into a chainsaw-esque sword if wanted.

Semblance: Third Eye: Ash's Semblance enables him to have slight clairvoyant, telepathic, and psychic abilities. These have a limited range of effect, but with it, he can tell people's true emotions, whether someone's lying or not, and sense their Aura and Semblance, as well as how much power they're using. This has a limited range, and it cannot do things like reading thoughts or manipulate people's minds.

Non-Combat Abilities: Ash's head is shiny enough to reflect light. Ash is an excellent sommelier, both for wine and guns. Ash is a half-decent songwriter, but he cannot sing, rap, or play an instrument. he can't even read music.

I do hope this is roughly in-line with everyone else's abilities and strengths. God Of Awesome suggested giving him a "spy" theme, although he turned out more "nature-y" than I intended.

Name: Sebastian Van (Vantablack)

Age: 17

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Occupation:' Scavenger

Personality: Van is always playing a role. When he left his family, that was one of the few times that he was truly himself; he was raw, emotional, vulnerable. But now, he varies how he presents himself. If he never acts like himself, never lets anyone see him cry, no one can ever hurt him. His parents, friends, family almost got killed when he showed his true colors. Never again.

Background: Van was born into a small family in a village that resides out in the wild. While it wasn’t the most advanced or secure place, he had a good early childhood, and he loved his parents. But he had always yearned for adventure and freedom and love. Surely, there was more to life than this simple existence?

As it turned out, there was. A lot more- like danger.

While exploring, he accidentally attracted the attention of a powerful Grimm. Fleeing, the than young boy became lost in the woods, hunted by a dangerous monster and with no hope of finding his way back to his home.

But luckily, one of the village guards was braver than the rest. He delved into the forest, and found Van just as he was corned by the monster. Planting a crossbow bolt into the thing’s back, he dealt it a grievous wound- it hadn’t seen him in time, and paid the price. He escorted him back to the village, but all was not well; the Grimm still lived, and it was angry. Storming the village, it attacked, attempting to tear apart the walls and slaughter anyone inside.

Thankfully, however, it was dealt with. A few people were killed, but almost everyone survived- a far cry from the usual tragedy of entire villages being slaughtered. But the experience left its mark on Sebastian; he felt like he was marked, fated to kill his friends and his family if he remained there.

So he left, without saying goodbye. And he put his talent for acting to use.

Weapons/Armor:

Greenleaf Crossbow A black and green light crossbow, made of scavenged parts and steel. A small, almost hidden button on the stock can be pressed to cause it to separate into two razor-sharp kamas. While the bolts that Van carries with him are almost useless while Greenleaf is in melee weapon form, the weapon itself is deadly in both forms, whether raining death from afar or in a whirlwind of sharp destruction. Interestingly, one of the other primary uses of Greenleaf in Kama form is as climbing axes, allowing Van to scale almost any surface.

Van also carries bolts infused with Lightning and Burn dust, although he’s loath to use them in all but the most dire circumstances. Most of them aren’t anything unique, instead simply exploding into their element; nonetheless, they’re rare and expensive pieces of ammunition for a scavenger like him.

Satchel Charges. Remote controlled explosives, easy to throw and attach to any unlucky Grimm Van can get close enough to strike. While their use as weaponry is clear, it also doubles as a distraction. The loud explosion can draw Grimm and other enemies towards it, usually providing Van a chance to escape. Each satchel charge must be primed ahead of time, which can be done surprisingly quickly; and even if this isn’t as inconvenient as simply throwing them, it prevents them from exploding at inopportune times.

-Gravity Armor: While others might not give a thought to how weighty or clumsy armor can be, Van is not a fan of heavy suits of armor. For one thing, they’re hard to travel in; and for another, almost everything in a five mile radius can hear you when you’re wearing it. And finally, he simply hasn’t ever had access to such equipment. Instead, he wears leather armor infused with Gravity dust, his most prized possession apart from Greenleaf. While it doesn’t allow him to fly or manipulate gravity, it does make him light and fast… which is essential when you live on the move. While it provides little in the way of protection, it is easy to move in.

Equipment: -Survival Supplies: Carried in a backpack and satchel, Van almost always has the essentials on him. Food, fresh water, and a few tools are the things that he’s never found without; if he‘s managed to find or make them, luxuries such as lighters, flashlights, and portable stovetops are prized possessions of his.

-Utility Knife: A sharp, if mundane knife meant for chopping, slicing, dicing, carving, and other activities off the field of battle.

Semblance: Van is a silent killer and stealthy survivor, and his semblance reflects both that and his desire to avoid notice. Able to generate short-range illusions, Van can change his appearance and the appearance of anything he’s holding or wearing. With a bit of practice, he can look like a human or a specific (humanoid and medium-sized) creature of Grimm, or go invisible; however, while looking like someone or something else, he is vulnerable to discovery.

Touching him pierces the illusion and lets someone realize he isn’t who he says he is, and strong negative emotions still attract the Grimm as usual. Its primary function is for scouting (look like a lesser Grimm or person to avoid drawing attention from foes that would otherwise charge immediately upon spotting him) or confusing enemies. In addition to these drawbacks, invisibility also is very labor intensive, and requires great focus and energy to pull off for a length of time; the complexity makes it a hard feat.

Non-Combat Skills: Van is extremely quiet when moving, whether in dangerous situations or not. This helps when he’s hunting or trying to avoid Grimm or other threats, but also makes him prone to sneaking up on others. He’s also a surprisingly good cook; when you have little to make do with, being able to make palatable food is a valuable skill.
