I guess this will be between Three Billboards and The Shape of Water.

I also bet on Margo Robbie winning for I, Tonya - not because I have actually seen her performance, just based on the buzz.

Coco is a lock in for Animated movies...it was a terrible year (otherwise Boss Baby of all movies wouldn't have scored a nomination...nor would have Ferdinand. I mean....really?). With no Laika, Disney Animation Studios or Aardman release, Coco is pretty much the only movie by a major studio which was any good.

And I am kind of interested in best visual effects....no idea who will win there. As I said elsewhere, there seems to be always at least one Marvel movie on the list, but they never seem to actually win.

[up] This has been the worst year for animation since the year Frozen won...and that one had at least The Wind Rises on the nomination list.

[up][up][up], [up][up] Ummmm, that's a category list with 3 strong films and one decent one, The Boss Baby can't be that terrible.

Swanpride Since: Jun, 2013

[up][up] Loving Vincent is certainly an impressive achievement and if the category were just about the animation itself it would certainly win just based on the effort which went into the movie. But it lacks on a narrative level, hence it has an outside chance at best.

[up] Well, it is not Pixels, but it is still rated rotten. Just based on the critical reaction, Captain Underpants was actually the way better received movie. But then, it was also not particularly ambitious.

Now that the list is completed as of post... Wow. Not even one nomination for Wonder Wonan. Like I knew it wasn’t going to get nominated for Best picture and all but... not even one. Well at least Logan was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Realistically, an animated film that isn't from a major studio/isn't well publicized is never going to win, because a lot of the voters don't even both watching most of the films in the category. Which is bullshit, but at least the nominations usually introduce me to some films I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

Wow, I did not make it to a lot of movies in the last year, only seen two of these (Get Out and Shape of Water). Well, and some of the films in the technical categories because everyone saw those.

[up][up][up][up] No...Sadly I haven't been able to see any of their movies in theatres. I always try to figure out when they are shown in my country without any success. So either they aren't shown, or they are really bad communicating their release dates.

They won the Annies for best independent animated picture and based on their two previous movies, the Breadwinner is certainly worth the watch. But it is too niche to have a change of winning.

[up][up][up] Good. Far from disputing the cultural meaning of Wonder Woman, but it is simply not good enough to get nominated in any of those categories.

I'm just happy Breadwinners and Loving Vincint got nominated since animation fans worried that the rule changes for nominating Best Animated Film would lock indie films out.

As for live action, I REALLY want to watch Shape of Water now.

[up] The rules changes DID lock indie films out. Otherwise Boss Baby and Ferdinand would have never scored a nomination over some other options. Breadwinner most likely made it because it won at the annies, and Loving Vincent most likely made it because the fuss which was made around the way it was created.

Re: Wonder Woman, yeah I never thought it honestly deserved the award or even a nom.No superhero movie since maybe the dark knight has. I did think they might nominate it as the “fun”nominee that has no shot in hell but gets the nom to stave off accusations that they’re a bunch of fuddy duddies who only like misery porn (eg Arrival, Toy Story three, Avatar, ) but I guess between Get Out And Shape of Water (both I think deserving of the nomination at least) that slot was full.

What I am surprised by is the lack of Blade Runner which I put in the same category as those two. In fact I’m honestly pretty upset Darkest Hour got a nom over it. It’s easily the weakest one and is exactly the type of historical Oscar bait that gets derided as well...Oscar Bait. It’s not even as good as The King’s Speech. Heck it’s not even half as good as the other World War 2 movie up there.

Oh and why the fuck was Lego Batman snubbed ? Strictly I don’t think it deserves it but if you’re only going to bother considering mainstream English language movies that were a big hit with the kiddies surely this one should have kept out before fucking Boss Baby !

Only thing here that really frustrates me.

The Boss Baby and Ferdinand are jokes, clearly… but that's a consequence of the Oscars being primarily an award ceremony for American movies, or English-speaking ones (despite being treated as a global award). But even in the English-speaking world alone, I have a hard time believing that there was such a drought of good animated features.

Now it's a shame that A Silent Voice is a 2016 movie.

edit: Also… James McAvoy doesn't even get a nomination for Split? Come on... The guy literally played 7 or 8 characters in this, and all fantastically…
