Anyone get the feeling that Cameron was director by proxy for this film? This doesn't really feel like a Robert Rodriguez movie. Then again, my biggest exposure to him is the Spy Kids films, so who am I to judge?

No,doesn’t feel like one of his movies but a director can do something different.

[up]x3 I don’t know what the movie GOTS is, but I do know GITS (Ghost in the Shell) and how much of a bomb that was.

Also no, as I think this movie might end up being the Deadpool of next year. Like the mention Deadpool movie it is a passion project of James Cameron who spent like 20+ years trying to get this film made. The initial trailers for both films manage to capture the looks and essense that made the respective comics beloved as faithfully as possible. They are both trying to be different from the standard norm of films in their genre. And theres the obscure factor both movies have as not a lot of people are familar with the source material they come from (though that maybe where the similarity ends as I can’t say this movie will be 100% accurate to the manga or not, but I do know Deadpool wasn’t 100% faithful to its source material).

Also the complaints about the eyes looking weird is another odd similarity. Its uncanny, for sure, but it fits the characters that were given (for Alita/Gally she is a robot, while for Deadpool he is known for showcasing cartoonish expressions in the comics).

So I can’t wait for this movie to come out! I have faith James Cameron can deliver a good movie based on a manga. I mean I can’t go by Ruroni Kenshi and Speed Racer alone for only legitimately good anime/manga adaptions . . . I would of added 20th Century Boys but that film has the flaw where I have to read the manga to understand whats going on in the movie.

[up] The 2010 Space Battleship Yamato movie is pretty good, if a little too much inspired by the Battlestar Galactica reboot.

Eh? Shes a robot, shes visibly a robot, and someone designed her to be a super-stimulus on the cute button. Possibly someone not that fantastic at robot appearance design, but Its fine. - good visual shorthand for "This character is not human and will never pass as human"

The difference is Deadpool's highly-expressive mask isn't something that sets off every human instinct to purge in flame or flee in terror.

Those huge eyes are ridiculous. They remind me of photos a guy I know posed for with a couple of other people. Those photos were edited to enlarge the eyes even more, making them creepy and hilarious at the same time.

From what I get, the eyes are indeed supposed to make her look weird and not-quite-human… But the issue is that it just looks really ugly. I'm afraid it'll be very hard to get used to it when watching the film.

…Also, am I the only one who finds the American title kinda silly?

But then the movie wouldn’t have continued that pattern where all the movies Cameron is involved (except his first one) with start with either “A” or “T”!

That's right! I forgot we were supposed to hate James Cameron because he directed Titanic and Avatar.

Battle Angel Alita? I think I have heard of it, but I never played it. It is a video game right? Like that other one I haven't played?

Despite being Japanese Grammar there's just something that sounds inherently cooler about the Adjective Noun Fred naming structure than the "Noun: Adjective Noun" or "Noun the Adjective Noun" one.

Oh, well my first guess was really that online wrestling show Battle Angles, Sumie Sakai and Ninja Ranamaru were on, but I knew it couldn't be that. But given Cameron and Taylor, who would almost certainly be the main character, are both Canadian, maybe movie about that should be his next project.

Alita's giant eyes are commented on in universe of the manga as being overly large compared to everyone else and she was supposed to be based on a doll.

I didn't really have a problem with them here.

This looks outright terrifying. The Uncanny Valley effect in this makes it hard for me to watch this without thinking "OH GOD WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS" and the cover of Forever Young by Bob Dylan that they use in this trailer reminds me of that shitty Leonard Cohen cover from Justice League.

Yo, that Leonard Cohen cover was even better than the original and also the beat thing about the movie.

Wait, theres a live action adaption of Space Battleship Yamato? This is just like the time I found out about the live action Devilman and Uzumaki movies . . . oh God I hope its not as bad as those moviess since you recommend it.

Back on topic.[up]x3 Same here. I believe the giant eyes is there to invoke Uncanny Valley and the fact every character in the original story noted it as a distinct features of Gally. I’m actually not bother with this decision made by James Cameron and think its not really a big deal to complain about. Its not like they made a live action movie of Cyborg 009 and use cgi to capture the exaggerated details of the characters in the series even though there is an anime of that series that gave each characters a more realistic design to reference from.

Speaking of Cyborg 009, that would of been a great anime series Hollywood could of adapt.

[up] My parents really enjoyed the Yamato movie without any familiarity with the source material, and my friend really enjoyed it while being a huge fan of the original (not the Americanized version). I think that’s a really good sign.

[up] Well in that case! Time to start an anime movie marathon! Especially to make me forget a certain anime movie that does to my favorite character what Batman v. Superman did to Batman (I’m refering to Death Note, namely towards L’s portrayal near the end of that shit).

None of the other robots in the trailer have that, literally none of them.

It would be fine if it was consistent like in the Ghost In The Shell animes where all the people with robot bodies do not blink ever thus some intentional Uncanny Valley effect but nope only the MC has those eyes.

[up] Yeah, problem with that criticism is that her having big eyes is actually a character trait of her in the original manga that was mentioned by the other characters in universe.

So while her having larger eyes than normal is indeed weird, its not really out of place characteristic for her.

Plus I wouldn’t judge the trailers alone for how all the robots will look in the movie since it only give glimpse. Cause lets face it, the original manga has plenty of out there designs.
