For those interested, a trope page for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is here. Arguably too early to create, but there is enough for it to not get cutlisted.

I can't access a higher resolution display at the moment, but did the main character's hair become more gray after that encounter with the samurai dude?

Ohhh, I really like the mobility they are seemingly giving us here.

Nice to see the "souls combat" evolve into something new.

I hope the protagonist in the trailer is just a placeholder for a custom PC. I love character customization.

Grappling hooks make everything inherently better, as the E3 showings of Just Cause 4 and Devil May Cry 5 can attest to.

Soulsborne combat's twitch heavy combat and high level of lethality lend themselves very well thematically to a samurai game, something From Software was not the first to realize.

So yeah this game is looking pretty slick so far. The question is if it can stave off Ni-Oh and Ghost of Tsushima.

[up] Holy Shit, where did you come from? I haven't seen you on here in a while.

Yeah, its the year of Samurai gaming announcements. This, Ghosts Of Tsushima, and Nioh 2 were all shown off immensely this year.

So Jim Sterling did a vid on the trailer:

Jim's feelings are...mixed, to put it lightly. He loves From Software but hates Activision.

My guess is that we're stuck with that guy, honestly. The character model is so detailed and exposed that the sort of anonymous armored PC we got in Souls doesn't really seem indicated.

Jun 12th 2018 at 9:44:47 AM

Yeah, if customization was the case that and they would show off some more armors in the trailer clips. Though armors will prob be in the game.

And honestly, I don't mind. I love the look of the main character.

He looks cool, I'm just not sure if going head-to-head-to-head with Tsushima and Nioh for 'grizzled haunted man with special powers fights monsters in wavy wheat field' is what From really wants to do. Not that they have much of a choice, it seems.

Nioh 2 seems to be shifting from William and focusing more on being able to become a yokai this time around.

So far, Tsushima has no supernatural elements yet, either.

Ghost of Tsushima still focuses on his special powers, but apparently in this case it's his ability to swallow his samurai pride and utilize stealth hence the title.

@Wanker: It's hard to say from what we've seen so far; it might be (fingers crossed) that they actually have a pretty kickass character creation system planned this time around, enough that helmet hiding might be a thing. That'd be pretty sweet IMO.

Edit: nevermind, we have apparent confirmation that the game has no character customization or multiplayer. https://www.pcgamesn.com/sekiro-shadows-die-twice/sekiro-shadows-die-twice-multiplayer

Kinda eh on the lack of multiplayer; that's always been one of the strongest aspects of souls games for me, but it still looks fun.

Edit2: Actually rumor mill from a so far very accurate 4chan leak on this game has it that there is character customization, but not multiple classes like in Dark Souls, CO-OP play only in Chalice dungeon like areas, and PVP via possessing enemies. Interesting if true.

Not trusting that leak. All sources reporting the game say singleplayer only, and the leak claims you were disfigured when the guy that cut off your arm clearly didn't touch your face. The leak also claimed it takes place in a Dark Fantasy that resembles Japan when this is quite literally feudal Japan.

From what it seems like, the leak had a couple of flukes. Nothing more.

[up] Yeah, I'm seeing those sources now; at first it seemed like it might be translation issues but now that more press has started reporting on the game it's increasingly clear it was a fake.

You really think Activision will let them ship a game without multiplayer? Ha!

Why would From, known for a franchise that has a beloved multiplayer, lie about it?

[up][up] That's just about the only reason to think there might be actually be MP elements in the game at this point.

[up] Right now the main source on the game seems to be a translated interview with a Japanese gaming site; bad translations maybe?

The headline for the Japanese article has 「マルチプレイなし」 in its headline, and running that through Google Translate outright says "No Multiplayer."

[up] I'm not saying you're wrong, 99% is your right, just playing devil's advocate. I'd advise against google translate though, even for relatively short phrases, plus its important to actually get the meat of the article due to the prevalence of clickbait headlines in all stripes of journalism these days.

Jun 12th 2018 at 11:37:04 AM

That's fair, I just generally advise against taking these kind of 4chan leaks at face value. For every one that is rather accurate two seem to just be lucky guesses that turn out to be bogus once the game comes out.

A PC GamesN new post, which was posted earlier than Variety, says:

game director Hidetaka Miyazaki announced that the “restrictions” imposed by multiplayer in the the studio's previous games have been entirely removed from the game. Miyazaki stated that "there is no multiplayer, since it is a fixed hero and a fixed class. I removed the restriction imposed by multiplayer."

There should be some more E3 coverage, so things shall become clearer soon.

Double post, but here goes some previews

HG has this to say:

In a stark contrast to the Souls and Bloodborne franchises, Sekiro focuses on telling a direct story to the players as players embark on their quest with a set protagonist rather than playing their own customized character. With a set personality and history, From Software explained this will allow them to focus on delivering a solid story. In another break from tradition, Sekiro will be single player only, as the much beloved multiplayer from Dark Souls and Bloodborne won’t be returning.

The demo ended with Sekiro going up against a twisted boss that From Software fans are bound to enjoy. The Corrupted Monk utilized her spear to make quick work of Sekiro with no resurrection this time.
Looks like some bosses can make you Deader Than Dead.

On Kotaku's preview, we have:

Death is also a mechanic in Sekiro, the developers explained. If you die during combat, you can use an ability called Bloodsmoke to pop right back up. It’s not clear what the limitations are, but producer Robert Conkey said that dying “can be used as an opportunity in some ways,” which may sound like one hell of a twist to Dark Souls fans. Imagine this: Enemies are overwhelming you, so rather than try to take them all out, you just die. Then, once they’ve all let their guard down, you pop back up and sneak around, killing them one by one.

  • This is not a Tenchu game, but it’s heavily inspired by From’s old action series.
  • One fixture of the demo is a giant snake who will definitely insta-kill you if it spots you.
  • At one point, we watched the player run into an old lady. “She’s part of an evil cult, and will call everyone if she spots you,” said Conkey. That’s why they murdered her.
  • The demo hinted at a lot of secrets and hidden passages, like a “Shinobi door” that allowed the player access to a new area. “There are a lot of secret passages and areas intended for ninjas to use,” said Conkey.
  • You can throw shurikens with your left arm, among other tools.
  • One final note: “There are gonna be a lot of really hard bosses in this game.”
