The monkeys aren't available until you beat Genichiro.

Well, managed to beat both Juuzou and Gyoubu on my first tries somehow. Admittedly I did kite Juuzo over to what's-his-name to have him act as a meat shield, but still.

Just killed ( haha not really) Genichiro, what an amazing duel. I didn't successfully do a single Mikiri or jump counter on him but prevailed anyway, I actually found him easier than Lady Butterfly in fact. Almost pissed myself when he started to get back up though, I thought he was gonna be Blackflame Friede all over again. I'm assuming this is roughly the halfway point of the game and I'm up to 84 deaths so far, so I think I've adapted to this game pretty well. By the equivalent point in Dark Souls I had probably died more than 200 times.

Btw how can you make Sekiro choose to help Kuro? I keep selecting "Help Kuro" on the menu but it just makes him recite the Iron Code, is there a sidequest I need to finish before I can unlock that option?

That's a false choice, you can't actually choose to go against Kuro's wishes just yet.

Aah, I should have guessed. That's a nice bit of Gameplay and Story Integration actually, shows how dutiful Sekiro is. Also Kuro's line about "How many times have you died and resurrected for my sake? Two? Three times?" is fucking hilarious. Poor kid has no clue.

The best thing From could have done was if they'd recorded specific lines depending on the number of times you've died. Like, once to ten times you get this line, eleven to twenty you get this other line. And then just have Kuro in disbelief if the count is over a hundred or something like that.

I'm getting strong Gehrman and Lady Maria vibes from Lord Isshin and the way he talks about Tomoe.

[up][up] That'd be hilarious if they had Kuro shame you for being bad at the game.

Fucked up Juzou good but that damn bull is still giving me problems even with firecrackers, kiting, and using sugars.

I dunno if this is what you're meant to do, but with the bull I used no art at all; I just jumped and dodged and whittled away its vitality when I could. I couldn't make it sit still long enough to deal a lot of posture damage.

About Senpou, it's the Monkeys that I haven't seen, but I also haven't beaten Genichiro, so good to know I haven't actually missed anything if I can't access them yet.

Edit - Genichiro update: phase two is kicking my arse. Obviously he has the new attacks, but it's the rest of it I think I'm actually struggling with. His behaviour is only slightly different to phase one, just different enough to throw you off. If it was completely different, I think I'd be doing much better.

Man, speaking of difficult, I think I've hit my first real wall with the Demon of Hatred. None of the bosses so far (I missed Father Owl, if only because I missed the opportunity to retrieve the second charm bell) have given me this much trouble. At least at this point it doesn't matter how much I lose, as I've already invested thousands of Sen in Divine Confetti and Spirit Emblems. But god damn, this thing is difficult. I think this might be the time that I actually start using Ako's Sugar.

The sugar items don't seem to last long enough to be worthwhile, to me.

Also, if there's stuff that can be missed like that, I want to know about it. I'm not much inclined to replay games just for something like that these days, and this isn't something I see myself diving straight back into.

Took a break from Genichiro to explore elsewhere... and encountered Lady Butterfly, then beat her on the second try. I have a feeling I might have got lucky, since everyone else has been talking like she's That One Boss. Got me an increase in attack power though, so that ought to help against Genichiro.

Beat the armored Knight myself.

Fighting a random knight in western armor that would fit perfectly in the rest of soulsborne out of nowhere and how its never really mentioned again afterwards is pretty hilarious to me.

Actually, another question related to missing stuff; I've formed the notion from in-game clues that beating Genichiro will start a new stage of the game, along the lines of Bloodborne's blood moon thing, I forget what it was actually called. Should I be doing as much as I can before beating him?

Edit - never mind, got 'im. Probably thanks to the boost in attack power and figuring out how to properly deal with the lightning attacks. I also destroyed Seven Spears after trying him again with the attack boost.

Wow, Mibu Village is quite the location. Probably not a good place to go for vacation, but I have to admit that I really like these sort of places in stories.

The Demon of Hatred is an exercise in patience. Since practically none of his attacks can really be deflected to build up his posture gauge as far as I can tell, I just adopted a hit-and-run strategy that punished certain attacks of his.

Well, I say "hit-and-run" but it was mostly "run, run, run, run, run, hit, run, run, run, etc."...

For anyone who just got the ability to dive under water, here's a warning: the underwater area of Ashina Castle contains a Headless. This one fights a little differently than the other Headlesses due to it being underwater, but it still has the "yank your innards out of your ass attack," this time complete with a suction effect to pull you within reach.

[up] I did wonder what that little moat bit was for, since it didn't seem to lead anywhere.

It was mentioned earlier that it's possible to miss a bell which unlocks another memory; I'd rather not miss it, if someone can say at least what point you should get it before.

@ITNW 1989 You can use Malcontent to skip your 1st or 2nd phase of choice (because it stuns the absolute crap out of him letting you beat the piss out of him for free). 3rd phase you need to fight legitimately. He also takes more damage from divine confetti.

@Artfulscruff the Owl (Father) fight is only necessary if you want the good (but not true) ending. iirc there's also a bead (and memory obvs) along the way but idk if you really need every health and strength upgrade.

It's not about it being necessary or wanting a particular ending, I'd just hate to find out later I missed something and can't go back to it.

Just attempted Shinichimen Warrior and the Headless... how the fuck are you supposed to deal with Terror? Even with the pacifying agent it builds up fairly quick when blocking attacks, and with the Headless' fog you can't dodge. Also I only had six lots of Divine Confetti and the blue samurai don't consistently drop it for me, and I don't remember ever seeing any in a shop.

Now the Guardian Ape is fucking my shit up. Firecrackers don't work consistently, or at least I haven't figured out how to make them work consistently, and he can send me flying and then follow up faster than I, the player, can recover.

Getting the stuff to get to that boss requires a complex series of eavesdrops and steps that aren't always apparent. If you wanna see how to do it look up "Purification ending steps".

Oh man. After more than fifteen attempts, I finally managed to beat the Demon of Hatred. I was at the third phase, and he was down to his last eighth or so of his health when he managed to land his flamethrower attack, burning me and sending me down to a sliver. I was about to waste my last curative, Kuro's sweet riceball, when I realized I still hadn't used my idol resurrection just yet. So I let myself die, revive, then ate that last riceball. If I'd died, that was it. Looking back, I'm pretty sure the decision to let myself die and revive at half health instead of eating the riceball right then is probably what saved my life.

Oh man, that was exhilarating. I'm genuinely surprised I managed to get through the demon's first two phases and nearly the entirety of his third phase without using a single revive. My hands are still shaking and my heart's still pounding like crazy from the fight.

Man I fucking love this game. It may have taken me over a dozen attempts to take him down, but those first fourteen attempts really helped me when it came to reading his patterns.
