Dark is Netflix's first German-language original series, apparently similar to Stranger Things note . From what I've seen (episode 1), it seems to be some sort of horror/mystery show set in a small town in 2019, where a teen and by the end of episode 1, also a kid disappears, something that happened already 33 years before the show's start. Here's the trailer.

So, I'm enjoying this show, and I'll finish the season after my test on wednesday. Has anybody else watched it? If so, what do you think?

I just watched all of it last night and all I can say is HOLY SHIT I WANT MORE!

I've heard the comparisons with strangers things but it's nothing like it. Dark seems way darker and less reliant on the whole 80's and 50's! nostalgia thing that is so popular in Stranger Things.

Personally, I loved the plot and all the twists and turns (which all begin to unravel by the 3rd episode). The premise is really interesting what with things repeating every 33 years, and while it may look similar to Stephen King's IT where the titular monster reappears every X amount of years, the reason why the 33 years thing is important makes sense in context. It involves Time Travel and the self-imposed laws of this particular instance of it.

One thing I didn't like is how there are millions of characters and it's hard to keep track of everyone. Not to mention, the acting seems rather bland for many of these characters, making only a couple who are actually interesting.

I'll probably watch it again and again and again just to try to make sense of everything that happened. It is a really good show though it can get very confusing very fast.

I just finished the series tonight. It's definitely awesome, though I agree that it is almost impossible to keep track of all the characters. I feel like it could best be described as Stranger Things + Primer, including the fact that the plot is impossible to understand, even after you've watched it.

I was also disappointed that the ending left many of the questions unanswered, but I guess it's planned to be an ongiong series, at least judging by the cliffhanger Sequel Hook. Stranger Things definitely did a better job of providing a self-contained season 1 though.

Finished this last night, I'm definitely going back to watch it again to catch what I missed because boy is this show a whirlwind. Loads And Loads Of Characters and Timey Wimey Balls abound.

The acting is pretty top notch, though I really don't find any sympathetic characters to latch onto. All in all excited for Season 2.

Also, I wonder how far back this all goes. Does it go back every 33 years in perpetuity? Will we be seeing 1920? 1887? 2052? 1689?

Well, finished the show about an hour ago. Very interesting. I disagree with [up] about lack of sympathetic characters, I liked the 2019 kids and teens (Jonas, Magnus, Martha, Mikkel, Franziska, Elisabeth and Yasin), 1986 Regina, 1986 Ines and the 1953 cast overall, except for Helge's mom.

I haven't watched Twin Peaks, but it sounds a bit similar except that has science fiction instead of supernatural elements.

How come there's no TV Tropes entry for this series yet? The show is pretty damn good!

The first German language Netflix series, Dark is a science fiction/supernatural thriller that shares likenesses with other shows like Twin Peaks and Stranger Things. The best way to go into this show is to look at it as the the spiritual antithesis to Twin Peaks, and an exercise in Germanic Efficiency. The show itself doesn't lie to you, but the characters might. Everything shown onscreen is true- it's just piecing it together that's the hard part. Every single character and plotline has a purpose, every piece has a meaning, and as the page quote says, "Everything is connected."

I was curious about this until I read that part. Now I don't want to watch it.

It's worth a watch if you ask me. Just be on the lookout for unreliable narrators.

I don't recall any unreliable narrators. Hanna does lie about a bunch of stuff, but it's all stuff we've already seen on screen so we know she is lying about it.

It's less that the narrators are unreliable but rather that the POV sometimes lies with characters that know more than we do at that point (and yet not everything).

So I'm confused...

How did Claudia know about the existence of a 3rd dimension and did she discover it over the course of her lifetime or through various itterations of the cycle?

I think the answer is just "she spent like 60 years mucking about offscreen and was involved in most of the time travel shenanigans without being directly affected, so she had plenty of chance to figure it out at some point".

One thing I was confused by was whether Adam and Eva retain their memories through different iterations of the cycle. They acted like they did at the end with the whole "it's never gone this way before/you were supposed to do X" thing, but that just raises all sorts of questions.

They don't actually remember previous instances of the time loop(s), but they do experience several moments multiple times through interactions with their future selves

When Eva says it's never gone this way before, she's referring to her memory of coming across her body as a middle aged adult after Adam shot her elder self.

I don't think it's ever explicitly stated, but I assume that in every previous loop Adam shot himself after shooting her. This would help explain his belief that he knows how to break the cycle when he really doesn't - he simply never interacted with his future self from after the point where he traveled to 2052 to kill alt! Well, in full Dark fashion, the issues of the forum have caused some of this thread to be lost and we lost a handful of posts of me and others talking about season 3, from it being pretty great but lesser than the previous ones (but with a wonderfully bittersweet ending), to the rushed pace and underused concepts like the Scar Trio, Eve, e.t.c.

But it's all gone now. Or perhaps it was never here. a glitch in the matrix.

I'm dead sure, that is a forum-wide problem. There were some 3-4 posts about the third season involving me that are gone now. One of them was yours, even.

Your memory has been affected by the travel.

I'm surprised that Noah didn't know that his daughter was going to be kidnapped by Adam's pawns.

I always believed that Noah was aware of the plan.

[up] I thought Season 2 made it clear that Noah only knew part of the plan. When he sees the missing pages from Claudia he realises that he had always been Adam's pawn.

Noah believed that Claudia was the one who kidnapped his daughter. Only once he saw the missing pages of the book that he realised it was Adam all along.
