Hulu's Future Man

Future Man is a new show on Hulu from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg that combines lots of time travel/sci-fi references with raunchy humor and lots of gratuitous modern violence. Like, a lot of it.

I'll start off (I've only seen 3 episodes out of 13 so far today) by saying that its not for everybody which is a silly thing to say since nothing is for everyone, but the show is definitely worth a disclaimer. It stars Josh Hutcherson, Eliza Coupe, and Derek Wilson as a 2017 slacker video game addict and the two future resistance fighters who travel back in time for his help to defeat mutants called Biotics who rule humanity, respectively.

To give a general sense, the first episode has a bit where a guy accidentally ejaculates directly on another guy, as well as a fight scene where the heroes brutalize a group of bikers and then later on kill a police officer. For all its fantastic elements, it plays one thing for drama as much as humor-the two badasses from the future do not understand how to live in a world that isn't one gigantic brutal war (one scene involves Tiger aggressively demanding to hold a woman's baby because, as she's from a future where humanity is sterile, she's never seen one).

The show references (either openly by Josh lampshading it or simply by being a shot for shot or line for line homage) everything from Children of Men to Back to The Future to The Last Starfighter and a lot of stuff in between. In short, its funny, sometimes clever, sometimes offensive, and often almost shockingly violent. If that seems like your cup of tea, give it a shot.

The pilot episode kinda rubbed me the wrong way with the whole "videogame nerd with no life part". Partially because it felt rather exaggerated, and also because you could tell that while the writers did have familiarity with games, their uber-geek nerd lore is lacking. In particular, that scene in the videogame shop discussing why Bowser uses those big green pipes to connect to his castle comes to mind; most of that infrastructure was actually built my the Mushroom kingdom. But then again... that's rather obscure knowledge, isn't it? Just who the heck is honestly even gonna care about those details, it's frigging Super Mario Bros!

But enough of the videogame stuff, that honestly only stays relevant for the first episode. The real meat of the plot may as well be inspired by Back to the Future, only with the Mary Mc Fly stand-in trying to control two dangerously naive and violent time-commandoes from killing people or altering history willy-nilly... and mostly failing. Got a feeling we're gonna find out Tiger and Wolf weren't top of the class when it came to the history books.

I stopped at the fourth episode currently. I'll probably get back to the series in a couple of days.

Was that supposed to mean you already watched it and were squicked out by it?

I don't have Hulu anymore. Not going to get it for one show, but if they keep doing stuff like this on their own, I might just get it back.

Well they have Marvel's Runaways coming up in less than a week. Hulu has a fair amount of decent original programming, actually-Freakish is pretty enjoyable as well.

The show does delve into the fact that Tiger and Wolf are scarily competent at what they do, and frighteningly bad at everything else. Which makes sense given their upbringing.

Josh is kind of an exaggeration, but then most of the characters are, which isn't too surprising given the creators. Josh's parents are the other side of the coin-they're so loving and so nurturing of Josh that it's practically a joke. But Begley and the late Headley (who the first episode was dedicated to) do a great job with the material.

[up][up]The vulgarity can sometimes be a bit too much to the point of irritation. In particular, Tiger and Wolf are supposed to be parodies of the Doom Guy and Serious Sam; everything they do is incredibly gory, they have puns and catch-phrases with profanities throughout, and as the above stated, they're incredibly good at killing things, yet don't know how to live for anything else. For example, Wolf thinks a mere pickle tastes amazing, and quickly fell in love with eating them.

Wolf and Tiger both have kind of amusing hidden depths to them, that neither of them were aware of cause they never got the chance to be anything but soldiers.

Which is kinda funny and sweet. The bits where they get to be other things are some of the best parts.

For being unflappable badasses, they both end the season objectively better people than they were. Josh, too and it's more or less due to their influence on one another.

With Future Man, Hulu may just have accomplished what many have tried but few have succeeded in doing: creating the perfect comedy/science-fiction hybrid.

I liked it but feel like it got less interesting as it went on. Also the nudity and violence was a bit excessive for me.

Apparently there's gonna be a season 2. Awesome!

It'll be interesting to see how they deal with the season finale's big reveal. Though i don't want to say any more without spoiling season one.

Anyone else have anything they'd like to say now that it's over? I liked season 1 but thought seasons 2 and 3 were just OK(although they had their moments). I thought in season 2 they should've gone more of a Sequel Escalation route as far as the Timey-Wimey Ball aspects of the show instead of confining it to one setting.
