This thread is about makeup. Not traditional makeup that makes an actor look good but rather the kind that can make an actor look older or sick or like a historical figure or even like another creature entirely. Think Rick Baker.

Speaking of Rick Baker, he tweeted that the makeup done by Arjen Tuiten for the upcoming film "Wonder" to make the child actor look disfigured was the one best he had ever seen. Coming from him, that's high praise.

Also related to Baker, The Oscar for Best Makeup was in response to The Elephant Man not getting such an award and the first winner was An American Werewolf in London. As such, I don't like it when the award is given to some period drama.

Anyway, one of my favorite makeup jobs is in Mary Poppins where they made Dick Van Dyke look like an old man for the part of Mr. Dawes Sr.

Any of you got favorites?

Robert Englund, who played Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare On Elm Street movies, once commented that during shooting, he went back to his trailer and took a nap, while still in full makeup. When he woke up and saw himself in the mirror, he nearly had a heart attack.

Armin Shimmerman, who played the Ferengi Quark in Star Trek Deep Space Nine, once remarked that, when an earthquake struck LA, he hopped in his car and headed home to check on his family, while still in full alien makeup. He scared the Hell out of some people he passed on the street...
