I haven't seen it, but forgive me for bitching because holy shit You Tube plays the ads for it ALL THE DAMN FUCKING TIME!!!
But it does seem interesting. Groundhog Day but as a horror movie is the general vibe I get from it.
Yep. Though I've seen people complain that the film never explains why the main character is reliving the day every time and I kind of call bullshit. Its part of the premise. It doesn't need to be explained and any explanation would be needlessly contrived. Not to mention Groundhog day didn't explain it and they even outright cut the explanation from the film in the first place.
I first saw this as a poster ad and it looked like it was just a thriller or a scary movie that's mostly one-sided (as in, the villain has near-total dominance). Recently however, the ads show the victimized protagonist fighting back with guns, so it looked like there's an element of action and combat that balances the scales.
And now I learn that it's a Groundhog Day film? I'm interested.
Funny you should mention superheroes. The screenplay is by Scott Lobdell, a comic book writer best known for his work at Marvel and DC.
You're not going to believe this. I wanted to watch the movie today, but when I got to the theater, they were still cleaning up the flooding in the auditoriums from the thunderstorms I got over the weekend.
Oh, I loved this movie. When you look back on it afterward you can see holes, but they're not really unrealistic holes in the least. That's right, even real life has plot holes, and this movie manages to nail those without falling into the worst ones stories get. Not gonna spoil anything for those who didn't see it yet. It's definitely worth a look. I'm gonna buy it on Amazon when it comes out, for sure.
As for the lack of explanation, if you want a sad theory, It's the Afterlife. SHE'S repeating the same day over and over, but everyone else isn't. So every loop where she fails, is another universe where she dies and everyone else has to deal with the aftermath.
Haven't seen the film yet but I am somewhat interested, which is odd since I don't really like horror films. What I liked about the previews is the impression that the heroine is not a typical reactive victim like in most slashers, but is proactively trying to fix the problem. The fact she knows someone is trying to kill her every cycle is a great bit of paranoia, but I'm interested in how she ends up using the cycles to her advantage. That's the point of the "Groundhog Day" Loop.

Its really nice to see a slasher that actually cares about its characters too. The heroine, while a totally bitch at the beginning, developes into a really likable character over the film. Too often Slashers will develop doomed characters and otherwise making their characters assholes so we're ok when they get killed off.
Happy Death Day LOVES its cast. Tree having her speech with Carter about 'I'm a bad person' followed by her confronting the killer, Carter getting killed, and she has every opportunity to kill the killer but realizes she needs to kill herself and reset everything so Carter isn't staying dead was GREAT character growth. Especially because we realize the self-sacrafice that was going into it.
I suppse a bit of a gripe is that Lea or whatever the roommate's name was is absent for MOST of the movie making it easy to forget she's a character. I suppose its an odd issue. If they call too much attention to her, it'd be hard to work out how obvious it is Tree isn't investigating her or you'd have to cover the fact that Tree doesn't realize she's the killer. Somehow. If they call not enough attention to her, it might become too obvious since she's the one character Tree doesn't investigate and is too extranious of a character if they don't throw any suspision on her. But, I still liked it and thought it was hilarious how petty the motivation was. After all the deaths... Its easy to forget its really only one or two from her perspective. And she had barely even started her first attempt so Tree explaining the motives and 'Howdunnit' is 'huh?' from her pov.
I was a bit irked about the whole finisher. For a while I was ticked that they didn't end with The Golden Run but the more I got to thinking about it, the more I realized they needed to do it that way to solidify the growth. She cheated for that golden run. Now, she has to be a good person without knowing ahead of time what bad things are going to happen to people. It means more this way.
And yeah, looking back on it the whole thing was obvious, but only in hindsight unless you avoided getting caught up in the adrenaline rush of the montage.
I loved the film, avoiding ending on the golden run was good actually, as there would be the hanging question of how did she not get in trouble for assaulting a cop.
Not only was it great to see her slowly work things out but I found the romance well done, I laughed so hard at the ending as well, so evil but so funny.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSaw the film. It was okay.
One thing really bothered me, though. Tree sees Tim watch gay porn. She then tells him that she knows that he doesn't like women, but she doesn't fucking know that! All she knows is that he likes men, but that doesn't preclude also liking women. That's some pretty flagrant bisexual erasure.
Ceterum censeo Morbillivirum esse eradicandum.Yeah, Hollywood hates bisexuals. It's okay with gays, but the majority of mainstream gays and straights both seem to think that bisexuals are wishy washy punks who need to make up their minds. As fun as the movie was, I never expected them to be that progressive. Only time I've actually seen a show or movie treat bisexuals right without doing it specifically for the fanservice was Madam Secretary having one of its male characters come out as bi and get a hug from Madam Sec for coming out to her.
ETA: Also, that does kind of fit her character. She's fallen off the golden path to life and become a bitch. You can't expect her to backtrack all the way from that and not assume that a guy who took her on a sucky first date and then watches gay porn on his own is actually gay.

I realize that it can be seen that way and I hate bisexual erasure, but I kind of read it a bit differently, I kind of got the impression with her commenting 'Dude, we went on one shitty date, leave me alone', that he was kind of simply using her as a beard more than being bisexual and genuinely into her. Would it have been nice to acknowledge bisexuals? Yeah, but he was also a pretty minor/non-existent character.

Kinda, but if his interest in her is genuine he’s been real shitty to her and won’t leave her alone. His behaviour to her is kinda understanding if he’s a closeted gay man, while if he’s bi or strait he’s being an asshole.

Hey, I didn't see a thread for this, so I made one. Anyone else see it?
Its a slasher movie that combines Groundhog Day with Scream and it was surprisingly good. Had some fun humor and the writing could be pretty clever. And, unlike most Slashers, it genuinely cares for its characters and doesn't have the whole 'Welp, she's a bitch. Can't wait to watch her die'. I really liked it.
