It wouldn't even necessarily need to be horror. At least, not overtly. Maybe a mod where the characters are aware that they're in a video game, but react to it in different ways. Maybe one of them wants to turn it into a different sort of video game (like an adventure game for example), and another wants to stick with the dating/slice of life stuff, and one of them (probably Sayori) is freaked out over the revelation. It could take cues from The Stanley Parable (which uses some similar ideas as DDLC, but in different ways). Just some ideas.

There's a mod called "Doki Doki Self-Aware Club", which sounds vaguely similar to that, but I haven't looked into it.

For whatever its worth, the creator of this mod basically admitted that the main reason he did this game was to get people interested in visual novels in general. He didn't intend for it to be a fully fleshed out story. As far as the emotional/psychological stuff goes, I feel that there are other games that do that sort of stuff better. The Stanley Parable plays around with the meta stuff, but besides that there is The Beginner's Guide, which goes further with the emotional/psychology stuff, and The Talos Principle which explores concepts of morality, philosophy, self awareness, etc. Compared to those, DDLC just seems like a gimmick. But I guess people mainly still like it for the characters?

I'm not going to say people are wrong for being interested in the characters, but it seems like the majority of players have moved on from this game because there just isn't that much there after you play it once or twice. I mentioned mods because that could breath new life into the game. Or could have.

Anyway, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, just expressing some thoughts I had. Feel free to disregard.

I really want Monika in Disgaea 5 now.

I'd love to see a fusion of Get Out and FNAF since that was brought up earlier.

Neverfall: I will said because as generl thing, doki dosent really feel like a video game but rather a storytelling experience in form of a game, this is why redwall complain about the MC in general: there is ony a couple of background, five-ish chararter and a game that is fairly quick to get on so the is not much to enjoy.

Also if you can compare chararter to another I will said Monika kinda remind me of Sans from undertale or even flowey: to chararter that have their outlook shape by their nature as chararter, suffering a sort of existencial crisis.

I just finished watching Materwelonz play this game a few days ago. Other than That One Scene sticking with me, I mostly like it for the characters and the Fulfilling Ending you get if you do everything there is to do. The girls honestly kick my protective instincts into overdrive.

Which One Scene? There's a couple.

Monika would probably fit in pretty well with the cast of the Neptunia Series.

I been saying that for months. Monika talking to the Neptunia girls about her epiphany would be such incredible therapy that even Neptune's dumb ass could lift her spirits.

Redcornwall's complaint isn't wrong tho. Considering how ddlc is a character driven game, i don't blame red being pissed about mc not being developed, VN trope be damned. It's sounds like an excuse for bad writing as the "stock visual novel protagonist" trope isn't even common if anything, that's more like a dating sim protag. Hell he's rather sympathetic than anything.

Maybe Monika's route was supposed to be unlockable in the 'original game' and Monika never knew about it. Could it explain why she lacks a route outside of meta

Doubt it, it feel more that monika was a video game helper, the one were you go to save your progress, having tips, etc.

I feel like it's more like a dating sim that got its unlockable content unlocked through hacking, and the result was a very elaborate "fuck you for hacking this game" message.

True. Than again i find mc more sympathetic than monika and no amount being a generic shell is gonna change that for me if he's simultaneously the son of Lucifer.

Everything was manageable until Monika started fuckin around with the game. Sayori was depressed sure, but Monika drove it to critical levels and if she hadn't then MC and Sayori could have worked things out. MC gets a lot of shit, but he reacted in a very realistic manner. Sayori was a ninja at hiding her depression, even Yuri and Natsuki didn't think anything was really wrong, the only person who knew about it was Monika because she can cheat and look in the code. So your best friend who you've known your entire life, who has always been this radiant ball of sunshine with a smile on her face, all the sudden starts acting strange and when confronted she tells you that she's always been depressed and has trouble getting out of bed some days. All the things she played off as being clumsy and kinda air headed all the sudden make sense. She's crying and waiting for you to say something after she just dropped the biggest bombshell revelation of your friendship/life. So you say the first thing, anything, that comes to your head to try and make her feel better, you tell her not to worry because you'll handle everything, you'll be strong enough for both of you, you tell her that you'll do everything you can to help her be happy.

Sure he shouldn't have told her that he felt betrayed, but this was a highly emotional moment for him too, and he almost 100% didn't mean for it to make her feel bad. He almost certainly meant it to reinforce the idea that Sayori can lean on him because that's what friends are for, but he didn't communicate it well in the heat of the moment. People give him shit for not staying with her, but he tried. He would have cancelled plans with Natsuki/Yuri to stay with her, but she told him not to and she would never forgive him if he did. He invited her to come with them so she could be around friends, but she wouldn't come. And up to this point she hadn't really exhibited any true signs that she was in danger, so arbitrarily insisting that he stay at her place or she his that night would have been silly.
