Episode 18… I'm always impressed at this series' ability to go from creepy to adorable to creepy again. Elias' attachment to Chise is both cute in how innocent he is and terrifying in how he manifests those feelings. And then comes Chise's magic wake-up.
But then back to serious business. I hate this guy, seriously.
As someone stuck with watching last week's episode due to a lack of premium membership I have to say it's nice to see that Water, having failed to kill Chise time and time again, is now switching tactics to taking her friends instead. We might be seeing one of the greatest anime villains ever in the making here.
Yeah, this episode it comes to a head that an inhuman monster is in fact... an inhuman monster. Holy shit, Chise was mad this time and for a good reason. That punch felt so cathartic. In this situation I would go with Joseph too. He might be a twisted monster, but at this point he comes of as more honest between the two.
In this episode, we have Chise backstory and a look at what her life was like before everything went pear-shaped (and how it went pear-shaped).
Did anyone recognise what those items were stuck to the refrigerator? Because the way he looked at them when he left, they seemed to play some factor in the reason her father left with her brother.
This episode... damn. Between the eye "transplant" and that flashback, it was hard to stomach. At least it seems Chise let go of her past after this.
Man, Chise's father is a dick. I hope died in a ditch somewhere.
Poor Chises mom, her story is just tragic.
Magical beings are just assholes in this series.
There's definitely more to why he left, and he even made sure to take their son with him. There was even that creepy as hell cat outside that he noticed and then disappeared. So calling him a dick is overreacting.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Except you don't know what that being is or what it could do. And as been consistently shown with the likes of Ashen Eye there's beings out there that can fuck people up and there's nothing they can do about it unless said being seeks to entertain themselves. The Japanese ones seen are specially cruel and sadistic.
If he was just running away he wouldn't have taken one of his kids with him too.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. He wakes up in the middle of the nght, then we see a red eye cat, which is then followed by him immeditely deciding to go somewhere and then never coming back. We even know cats are supernatural in nature due to their multiple lives.
It doesn't take much to figure out it's related to the supernatural. Japan even has cat based monsters like the Nekomata.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Chise's dad getting the fuck out is a clear case of O.O.C. Is Serious Business.
It's also worth pointing out that it was clearly not a planned action, this was something done on the spur of the moment since he didn't have anything packed. While the possibility of something supernatural influencing him isn't certain it's high enough that it cannot be dismissed.
I was just asking about what those things of the fridge were because I was wondering if they may have played a part in his rationalisations.
I think he didn't plan on leaving forever... Rather it seemed like he had a business to take care off and whatever happened made him disappear. He did hesitate when Chise found him and was considering taking her with him only at the last moment deciding not to. If he was running away from the family due to the monsters why would he consider taking Chise when she's an even bigger monster magnet that her mom?
If he went out to fight a monster and it went badly it would easily explain it but he wouldn't take his baby boy for it. It is a bit of a mistery but in this case I think he went out to deal with something involving that monster outside and things prevented him from coming back.

I think that's the underlying moral of many fairy tales, and with good reason in this world.
It's been fun.
