Okay, so just recently the show Big Mouth aired on Netflix; and I notice a lot of attention it has been getting from people . . . not positive attention due to the trailers which cause people to criticize for touching on puberty among middle schoolers. Not to mention being a clone of Family Guy, so it would be all tasteless jokes.

Well, I just watched the whole season and have to say: its not as bad as we all expected. Hell, this marks the third time an Adult Animated Netflix show actually turning out good (the first two being of course Bojack Horseman and F is For Family). The show actually did a pretty funny and over the top job in portraying puberty, making it like an animated version of Superbad. The humor doesn't rely too much on sex jokes alone in spite of the subject matter it is dealing with, and provides a good variety of comedy/jokes. There is also some good meta humor throughout series where it make references to past episodes, shout to other shows that inspired it (like they did a parody to Seinfeld in one episode) and even lampshades its own premise at how it won't fly well with people.

All in all, its a surprisingly good show IMO for its audacious humor and actually pretty creative animation (the show opening comes to mind for a great showcase in its animation). So, to anybody who watched it, what do you think?

I watched the first episode. It was uncomfortably relatable at times. Some jokes hit for me, and others missed (the whole part where everyone turned into penises was just kind of "really?"). The animation is still ugly as sin but I'm getting used to it.

My sister is in seventh grade, and I swear she has friends/interactions that she tells me about that are just like these kids. (I'm not talking about the sex stuff - not going to ask her about that - but the one gay kid with the attitude I definitely could pinpoint to one of her friends.)

[up] Agree on how uncomfortably relatable this show is. Especially with gay episode which I admit to having gone through a bi curious phase where I am not sure if I am homosexual or not due to interests I have being somewhat gay in nature (enjoying wrestling, always liking to draw guys muscular, anime).

The Queen like song about the joys of Being Gay (sung by the Ghost of Freddie Mercury) came out of nowhere and was pretty great musical interlude.

My sister's watching it right now and when I heard the main boy vowing to never masturbate again I responded with "That poor boy's gonna die."

This show is pretty disgusting, but then again, so is puberty.

Best characters are the monsters and Duke Ellington's ghost. The best song is the one sung by the ghost of Freddie Mercury, but the other songs aren't bad. Most of the kids are likeable, and the gym teacher is funny but has a chance at overstaying his welcome.

Yeah that gay song was very well written.

Hell the same could be said for all the musical numbers in the show. Like that song "L Ife is One Big Fucked Up Mess" which was a pretty good High School Musical like song.

I'm only watching one a week, but I still remembered "You're picturing it, we're talking about it" because they said it three times. Also I noticed the fake ending to episode three had a different thumbnail for episode four...?

This show was top-notch.

Yeah, the comment section does a good job of showing why that critique is rather flawed.

So yeah, new season released recently. Anyone else seen it?

I liked the new additions to the cast. The Shame Wizard stole every scene he was in.

Are the things Duke Ellington's Ghost says about himself true? Obviously he didn't live in Guy Town, but just in general. (Like about the song Sir Duke being about him or helping kill Natalie Wood.)

[up][up][up]Thewlis is really good in villain roles. Well, certain cape movies aside. But he's amazing in Fargo.

A show about the foibles of puberty sounds great, but do they really have to keep showing us kids' uncensored genitals? I know it's a cartoon and the actors are all adults, but that makes me super uncomfortable. It's the reason I haven't watched past the first season.

Honestly the bigger more overarching problem beyond the genitals for me is that the artstyle is so relentlessly ugly, like yeah I get this is middle school and you want to show all the awkwardness and ugliness that comes with this traumatic period (hehe) of your life but good lord... I will concede that the writing is stronger and snappier than I initially expected but yeah, same as you I haven't really ventured past the first season for such similar reasons.

Anyway bumping this also to point out the controversy regarding a scene that misrepresented bisexuality and pansexuality, with the co-creator apologising for not putting care into said scene.

EDIT: also as someone who still mourns the cancellation of Tuce And Bertie, can everyone who whined "T&B WAS CANCELLED FOR THREE SEASONS OF THIS" just log off for at least three days

I'm gonna be real: I thought Tuca and Bertie was good but not great. I'd rather watch T&B than Big Mouth, but I'd also rather watch Disenchantment than T&B.

On a lighter note, I'll give Big Mouth some credit. The ghost of Duke Ellington singing "And it doesn't get any better when you're deeeaaaddd!" has become one of my go-to quotes.
