I'm too afraid to holler 73 to the mods because I fear I might get suspended due to the fact I did this too often.
Spanner here: This thread
has declared Celebrity Paradox to "an actor is in Work X and Work Y, and the second work references the previous work". How does that interact with these tropes?
It's not always an AA or CG, but it can be both. There is possibility for overlap. Technically, that was the original definition of Celebrity Paradox, but it had a lot of misuse. No spanner issue. See my post with examples deconstructed in that thread
, where only one qualifies (an Actor Allusion for sideline reasons).

OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!What about instances where there are multiple Actor Allusions that it almost becomes a whole-role Shout-Out (i.e. a Casting Gag), but it is over a period of time and clearly done after the show was in production (i.e. not known at casting), is it still a CG?
The example that's got me asking: Chyler Leigh plays Dr. Alexandra "Lexie" Grey on Grey's Anatomy, the half-sister of the main character, and who leaves the Seattle-based hospital show after dying in a plane crash. Two years later, Leigh plays Alexandra "Alex" Danvers on Supergirl, the adopted sister of the main character who is introduced to the show in a plane crash where she nearly dies. Later in season one it is revealed that Alex went to medical school. In season 3, it is revealed that she didn't only go to medical school but that she did actually become a doctor and worked at a hospital in Seattle for several years before moving to National City. Whilst the character relationship was devised before the show was cast, and the character name is an allusion to Lex Luthor, and the plane crash introduction comes from a Supergirl comic, the many similarities were made apparent and it is likely that the later character details (doctor in Seattle) were added deliberately to make a whole-role Casting Gag.
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!Casting Gag isn't one of the Tropes Of Legend, so redefining that trope won't take too long.
Not yet, I'll set them up as copied page source with some tweaks. I believe on page 3 we agreed that Actor-Shared Background is trivia, but Casting Gag and Actor Allusion are both main page tropes?
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!- Sandbox.Casting Gag
- Sandbox.Actor Allusion
- No sandbox for Actor-Shared Background because the description fits, though it could use some rewriting.
Please provide input :)

OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!I like the drafts. Two sentences on Sandbox.Casting Gag (actually from the original) strike me as awkward, perhaps they can be rephrased:
- Note that the gag is dependent on the casting and the role only rather than some later effected plot or dialogue.
- The word only feels off, maybe "...the gag is entirely dependent on the casting and the role rather than..."?
- When the Casting Gag is specifically that a new role is an Actor Allusion for an already established character, it's I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine.
- Don't get it

like the suggestion for (1).
For (2), it's referring to the I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine trope, which is an In-Universe version of Remember the New Guy?. I believe the sentence is saying that if Actor A being cast in Work Y is a reference to their role in Work X with Actor B, and Actor B has been in Work Y a long time, it is set up more like the other trope. That seems like too much explaining to have to do, though, so we could cut it down to "See also I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine"
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!Draft descriptions look good, but some of the examples may need to be pruned.
"It's just a show; I should really just relax"Looks like general agreement, I'll get the descriptions up and then we can go through examples. Probably no need to bring them to the thread unless you're uncertain. If you feel like the example fits but needs a rewrite, I'd suggest commenting it out.
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!I suppose the image pickin thread can be reopened. The pages Casting Gag and Actor Allusion have their updated descriptions; the laconic descriptions that can be quoted for Image Pickin' are:
- Casting Gag is a scenario where an entire role mirrors/parodies an entire previous role or RL situation of the actor. A conscious casting choice can be assumed. This can also apply to cameos.
- Actor Allusion is reserved for deliberate yet rather isolated throw-away references to previous works/roles.
I would support Darren Criss as The Music Meister in The Musical Crossover of Supergirl (2015) and The Flash (2014) with Grant Gustin as Barry and Melissa Benoist as Kara (e.g. here
) juxtaposed with their roles in Glee (perhaps combining this
◊ with this
, on the same stage?). The other suggestions related to Supergirl/The Flash are either too ambiguous to portray (JAFAAC) or simply Remake Cameo.
