Quirky Neighbour Country is not thriving, and perhaps it is not even tropeworthy.

It was in Trope Launch Pad (when it was YKTTW), but it was launched with one hat only and none of the concerns voiced in the discussion were answered or dealt with.

Live TV has 4 examples (one entry has bad example indentation and is ZCE).

Web Comic section has several examples from one work, all ZCE.

Then there are many Real Life examples, most of them have no context and the entries are very natter-ific.

It was launched in 2012. There are only 11 wicks, one of those is a re-direct. Some of them are on Useful Notes pages for countries. I think only two are work pages (one is a fan fic and the other the web comic).

It is very vaguely defined, though the feeling of considering other countries and neighbouring nations quirky, wacky or strange is probably a universal stereotype.

However, in the current state, I don't think the wiki would lose much by cutting the page.

Most likely outcome is sending back to the Launch Pad to start over.

Just going to mention, it didn't launch with one hat, it predates the Hat system and all YKTT Ws from then were just retroactively given a hat when it was implemented. It's why you see so many tropes good, bad, or what-have-you from the era seemingly launched with one hat.

[up] Ah, thanks, I think I have heard it before, but since forgotten.

So what is the proper procedure? Is it necessary to unlaunch the trope and restore YKTTW entry, or can the page stay as-is for the time when it will be discussed again in TLP?

In the scenario that it gets sent back, what's the next step? What needs to be changed to make it better?

I've seen a bunch of tropes be "sent back" by people in the forums but then only two or three of the many commenters go to TLP to discuss the trope in there. Sometimes the tropes get launched again, but there's always a discussion of what needs to be changed in order to make it a better launch than the last time it was launched. Unlaunching isn't a solution in itself.

Also, Quirky Neighbor Country was launched in 2012, so — though any of the concerns mentioned in the comment section may still be relevant — the original draft commenters probably won't return, so we shouldn't lean on their return or knowledge of the issues in order to fix the trope.

I'd rather the trope be cut outright, honestly. It's a stub article without relationships to other tropes; it has a ZCE problem; it has not been thriving (probably related to not having relationships spelled out and being a stub); it seems to be Not A Trope (character thinks or work portrays neighboring country as "quirky" or "weird" itself doesn't seem like a trope).

This is mainly about how many real countries relate to each other, and specifically how they portray each other in jokes. It's certainly a real thing, but the way it appears in works is mainly cultural jokes, and jokes don't tend to get their own pages. Something like Scandinavia and the World draws a lot from this kind of relationship in the jokes there, but such works are rare.

There are stock jokes (often three people trying to solve a problem in variously inventive ways, where they each come from a neighbouring country), but again, we don't really trope those. Not because they're not works, but because they're not long enough to collect enough tropes to get their own pages. They do appear in joke sections here and there, though.

It is a trope, but as I've said, there's an inherent problem with collecting examples.

[up]I usually interpret "send it back to TLP" as "cut it, but let's pretend we don't", since that's what usually happens.

So this trope is how nearby countries get made fun of via their quirky stereotypes? Like How I Met Your Mother's making fun of Canada and how the 80s came to Canada in the mid nineties or how Japanese works portray Anime Chinese Girl and such?

It might be too narrow. States and Provinces often do the same sort of thing (New York v. New Jersey or California v. Oregon), and sometimes even cities (San Francisco v. Oakland v. Berkeley).

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.

It's the same kind of mentality, I believe, but on different scales. I'd say the important part is that it's in good natured fun.

Bumping.

I totally forgot I had made this thread, sorry. Anyway, is there any way to reach a consensus about what to do with this page?

If this gets sent to TLP, I'd be willing to sponsor it for a while. (But I am biased towards this (what I belive is) not-a-trope.)

It certainly is a real thing but rarely used as a narrative tool. I would say dump it.
