Nightmare Fuel cleanup and maintenance

Go To

Now with a sandbox!

It appears that many Nightmare Fuel pages have problems, including:

1. Listing non-scary things that made the viewer feel slightly uncomfortable at worst.

2. Having spoiler tags on them (which is against the page's guidelines).

3. Listing Fridge Horror and fan theories.

And much more!

On a few occasions, people from outside the site's community have pointed out our overly lax usage of Nightmare Fuel to make fun of us, meaning that it can legitimately harm our reputation to let this go unchecked.

The TRS thread meant for redefining Nightmare Fuel started to become a place for cleaning up Nightmare Fuel pages in general, so we may as well move these discussions to Long Term Projects where they belong.

Here are the guidelines to determine whether something is Nightmare Fuel or not.

    Nightmare Fuel rules
  • This is a page whose name is intended to be taken more literally than most. It's not enough for material to be scary; to truly qualify, it has to be frightening enough to legitimately unnerve/disturb the viewer, with actually being nightmare-inducing as the ultimate endpoint.
    • Good signs that something IS Nightmare Fuel include if:
      • It left you feeling shaken even after the credits had rolled, you turned the last page, or are otherwise done with the work.
      • You have a hard time falling asleep if you think about it at night, or have a literal nightmare about it.
      • You dread that episode, scene, level, chapter, or song during re-watches, and consider skipping it.
    • With that said, don't add something just because it happens to be your personal phobia. For example, spiders can be scary and many people have arachnophobia, but just because a spider happens to be in the work, it does not make a Nightmare Fuel entry. It needs to reasonably be scary to someone without the phobia.
    • Don't confuse tension with fear. If the hero is in trouble, but you know he'll make it out okay at the end, it's probably not Nightmare Fuel unless the threat is especially disturbing.
  • Explain WHY the entry scared you. Try to convey your sense of fear to your readers. Avoid putting up Zero-Context Examples.
    • Remember that Weblinks Are Not Examples, and neither are quotes on their own. You should explain the horror in your own words, rather than rely on others to do so.
  • Don't add things that might have scared someone. If it didn't scare you, and you don't personally know anyone else who was scared, you shouldn't be adding it to Nightmare Fuel.
  • Nightmare Fuel should stick to you even after you're done with the work.
    • If something is initially presented as scary but turns out to be harmless, it's most likely not Nightmare Fuel since The Reveal makes the scariness vanish.
    • Jump Scares are a good source of Nightmare Fuel, but not all of them automatically qualify: being startled is not the same as being scared.
  • Hypotheticals are not Nightmare Fuel:
    • Remember that Trailers Always Lie: a scene that is presented as scary in the trailer could very well turn out to be inoffensive in the finished work. Only add examples from unreleased works if they were especially terrifying in the previews.
    • Fan theories do not belong on the Nightmare Fuel page under any circumstance. No matter how much evidence they have to support them, don't add them until they've been officially confirmed. In the meanwhile, take them to Wild Mass Guessing.
    • Fridge Horror goes on the Fridge page, not Nightmare Fuel. Don't add it unless it's Ascended Fridge Horror.
  • Keep in mind the work's intended audience when considering whether or not something is Nightmare Fuel.
    • If something is normal or expected in the genre, it does not automatically qualify. Violence in a Fighting Series or gore in a horror movie must be especially disturbing or gruesome by the work's standards to be Nightmare Fuel.
    • Remember that Kids Shouldn't Watch Horror Films. If a work is rated PG-13 or higher but would only be scary to young children, it's not Nightmare Fuel.
    • The standards on what qualifies as Nightmare Fuel are especially stringent on works aimed at children and pre-teens: kids have hyperactive imaginations, so even something benign can give them nightmares.
  • Spoiler tags do not belong on Nightmare Fuel pages. Much of what scares us comes from inherently spoilery stuff such as death and the unknown, so finding spoilers on these pages should be expected.
  • Nightmare Fuel is an Audience Reaction, so it needs to be scary for the audience. Describing how the characters react to something scary isn't needed. Just because something scares them, that doesn't mean it scares us as well.
  • Nightmare Fuel is a No Real Life Examples, Please! page. Meta-examples involving the actors, production, or behind-the-scenes incidents are not allowed.

Guidelines when proposing cleanup of a page:

  • Some rules are pretty objective. If you see a Zero-Context Example, Fridge Horror, Real Life example, speculation, In-Universe reaction that isn't scary to the viewers, examples that explicitly describe themselves as not being very scary (including "mildly creepy", "somewhat unnerving", and other synonymous phrases), or examples that are just scene summaries without going into detail about why it's so scary, you can (and should) remove them immediately without coming here to ask.
  • You should also strip all spoiler tags from the page. Itty Bitty Wiki Tools has a tool for that, but it can cause problems, so if you use it be sure to preview the page and thoroughly look it over.
  • Once you've fixed the objective issues with the page, bring it here so we can look at the more subjective problems, such as examples that may not be scary enough to qualify. If a consensus is reached that a certain entry does not qualify, it can be removed.

I'd say also say keep the scene from the first Treehouse of Horror where the family are prepared to stab each other while the house is ranting that everyone will die. True, it's not overtly gory like later TOH, but the atmosphere is still intense enough and it's probably the first really disturbing sequence from the Halloween episodes.

Seeing Pluto's YMMV page, I found this example. Is it kosher?

  • Plutotopia. why is it so? Well, Pluto in a dream is tormented by a talking cat that addresses him with sarcasm and a suicidal sadomasochist to boot. It shows why cats and dogs should hate each other because this solution is disturbing.

Also, while this is valid, it's a ZCE.

NightmareFuel. The Loud House, which was previously cut for not having enough examples, was recreated with new ones. Thoughts?

  • In "A Tale of Two Tables", Lincoln's entire Nightmare Sequence about the grown-up table. The very worst parts are probably his parents' heads revealed to be roast turkeys, and the table chaining Lincoln up and dragging him down a dark purple vortex, the faces of his five older siblings surrounding him while chanting "ONE OF US...ONE OF US..." Fortunately, the episode ends completely differently.
  • Frank's babies hatching in the air vents, followed by Leni's terrified screams. It's any arachnophobe's worst nightmare.
  • In "One Flu Over the Loud House", some of the zombie-like imagery of the flu epidemic, including the infected girls' pale green skin and wonky yellow eyes. A special mention goes to Lynn Sr.; in order to keep the Running Gag of his full face never being shown, he's entirely in silhouette, except for his sickly yellow eyes.
  • In "Schooled!", Lincoln baits the class Piranha into biting his finger, resulting in one of its teeth getting embedded in his finger. Lincoln removes the tooth, and blood spurts out. Not pleasant if you're Afraid of Blood.
  • Similarly, in "The Boss Maybe" Lucy comes into the kitchen placing a spleen inside the refrigerator. Later, she asks Leni for help to remove blood from the ceiling, with her hands covered in the stuff. Luan is appropriately grossed out, and we get no explanation as to what the heck Lucy's been up to all day.

I was gonna bring up that page, which I previously had cut due to there being only three examples, and I though that not having an entire subpage would curb misuse. The last two examples are newly-added; I’m not sure about either of them, but they don’t sound that scary to me.

Since this is a show for kids, the standards are a bit laxer here, but there are still some possible stretches.

The first three were already approved by the thread, I think. The fourth sounds like it's about a specific phobia, but if there's a lot of blood coming from his finger it would count. (I'm thinking about an Series/iCarly scene that squicked me out a lot as a kid.) If it's just a trickle or even just a spurt, probably not. The fifth, again, depends on how it's played, since right now it sounds like Black Comedy reliant on Fridge Horror.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Since someone mentioned it, I'm gonna do NightmareFuel.xkcd, this should be easy.

    xkcd
  • That goddamn Garfield comic. ZCE, and it's not even that scary. Cut.
  • Frame Another ZCE, but this is actually scary. If we added an actual explanation as to why it's horrifying, this could be kept.
  • When I got used to the regular nightmares, my subconscious got creative. Yet another ZCE, and again, not that scary, more a bit sad.
  • The isolation in the "A Bunch of Rocks" strip. Why are there so many ZCE's on this page, and this one isn't even that scary! Cut.
  • The alt text. Because it might be true. ZCE, and still not scary. Cut.
  • The aptly-named #647: "Scary" ZCE, and not scary. (I wonder how many times I'm going to use that explanation)
  • The "Pore Strips" strip. ZCE, and not that scary.
  • The mouseover text on this strip. ZCE, and the Alt text more Crosses the Line Twice than anything else.
  • "One." ZCE, not scary
  • Time Vultures. ZCE, Fridge Horror.
  • Sheeple. ZCE, but actually scary.
  • Endless wings. ZCE, not scary.
  • "I looked down." ZCE, a tiny bit scary
  • To some, how frigging BIG the 4th panel of Click and Drag counts. This has to do with phobias, which if I'm remembering correctly, doesn't count. (Surprisingly, this is an actual phobia in the form of megalophobia. Still doesn't count, though)
    • Then they must fucking hate Hoverboard... Natter, and again, phobias don't count.
  • "Friends." It may seem like a typical, kind of sad comic about dating, until the line "Bit by bit, I'll make you depend on me." This one can be kept, it's not a ZCE and it's pretty horrifying, at least until the last panel
  • This is a true nightmare depending on your own views on morality, culture and progress. It really isn't.
    • Also, it perfectly illustrates a nightmare many parents have now: you can't know (and by extension, control) what your kids will find on the internet and when. Your child may "learn" some grown-up stuff online and try it out not knowing what they're really doing. Natter, Fridge Horror, AND not scary all on one!
  • 10-Day Forecast. ZCE, but actually scary.
  • "I'm rubber, you're glue." The Guy with the Hat exploits what that would mean as the guy's entire body is glue and bonds with the rubber person forever. That is pretty scary. Keep, I guess.
  • Fish. ZCE, and not scary.
  • Keyboard Mash. ZCE, sort of scary.
  • Voice. I can only control my voice once every six years, And I Must Scream. Maybe?
    • What makes it worse is that the mouseover text for this strip is very similar to the one from "Keyboard Mash". Could those giant spiders be spreading? Natter and Fridge Horror.
  • The alt text on this one points out that we've already invented unstoppable robot assassins. Alt texts don't count, I think.
  • "Timeghost" might not seem scary, but then you read the last panel... Not that scary.
  • As a result of there being too many hurricanes and the naming convention being exhausted, all of the hurricanes are named "Steve". Your forecast tomorrow is "Steve". Not scary.
  • Earth Temperature for two main reasons. Let's see here...
    • The first one is the implication that despite all the existing overwhelming evidence, non-scientific arguments AGAINST the theories of man-made global warming are proliferating and causing severe obstacles to efforts towards solving the problem. Maybe? Probably cut.
    • And the second one, which makes the first a true nightmare for anyone under 60, is that while it took over 11000 years for the average temperature to rise 4 degrees and reach 0°C, it'll take humanity a little less than a century to achieve the same effect and get to 4°C. This is scary, because I'm only 14 as of today, so I'm fucked.
      • These two comics illustrate what that means. Natter.
"We haven't had a day like that since the nineties. (...) What used to be normal now feels too cold."
"[+2 IAUnote ] Cretaceous hothouse. +200m sea level rise. No glaciers. Palm trees at the poles."
    • What is worse is that unlike previous entries on this list, this is real, and according to projections that "Cretaceous hothouse" may be a reality if the current path continues. Not sure if this is Fridge Horror or not, probably is.
  • House of Pancakes. It's like a document you'd find in a Survival Horror game, and it's made worse by the fact that it's never explained. This is pretty scary.
    • Though it's made slightly less scary (or depending on how you look at it, more) when you realize it's a reference to House of Leaves. There's also the Alt Text: Natter.
  • Watson Medical Algorithm. The Alt Text cranks it up to And I Must Scream levels. ZCE, but this is pretty scary.
  • Scary Names, which plots the scariness of a name versus the actual scariness of what is describes, the alt text mentions that somewhere far off to the right of the chart lies the benign-sounding Helvetica Scenario. Which involves a man's eyes, mouth and nose somehow being blocked off by his own skin. Pretty damn frightening. Don't know why there's a spoiler tag though.

I feel like I did bad on this one, this was harder than I thought...

SROMG has even parodied that exact strip twice, too.

I'm gonna review Poptropica. Keep in mind that this game is aimed at kids around the age of 8.

  • Any Non-Standard Game Over, especially in Survival Island. It's essentially the same as cutting to black before your Poptropican dies... Eh, you end up completely fine, so I'm not sure.
  • The video on Virus Hunter Island shows what the CC 13 Influenza can do. The virus can infect whole organs and eventually the whole body. Soon, the infected can infect everyone else. The scariest part is that it mentions that the virus can easily make everyone extinct. The creepy music does not help either. Maybe fridge? I could see how this is scary, though.
    • In light of, um, recent events, Virus Hunter is much more scarier as people are probably more aware on what a global outbreak-and the illness that caused it-can do than they were in 2013. People sure love to shoehorn everything as a COVID reference.
  • Ghost Story Island has one of the seven instances of sound in the AS 2 islands. (The others being the bell you can ring in the comic book shop on Super Power Island, the phonograph on Time Tangled Island, the Chupacabra breaking out of the box on Cryptids Island, the lightning on Vampire's Curse Island, the post-production sound effects on Back Lot Island, and the videos on Game Show Island.) When you look through a telescope in a creepy, boarded-up house, Fiona suddenly appears behind you and asks "Are you looking for someone?" I refused to play this island as a kid because I had heard of this scene and didn't want to witness it.
  • Ghost Story Island contains a foggy cemetery. While navigating the hedge maze, you may see a statue of the Grim Reaper. This scared me as a kid, could probably be explained better though.'
  • The Jersey Devil on Cryptids Island. You look for him in an old abandoned house where something is suspiciously shuffling around. It tuns out to be just a raccoon, and you'll probably be caught off guard when you turn around to see the Jersey Devil staring right at you through the window. I've heard a lot of people freaked out over this, keep for sure.
  • Whatever happened in the Bad Future on Time Tangled Island is never explained. But judging from the terrifying damage and the fact your character, now 50 years old, is the sole survivor, something happened. Possible Fridge, but I always found this a bit unsettling as a kid.
  • The main villain of Survival Island, Myron van Buren, is one of the darkest characters in Poptropica history. He hunts humans. Maybe? But he doesn't actually kill anyone and you get revenge on him at the end, so...
  • The first two parts of Monster Carnival Island, where you set up the carnival games and try to win them, are rather tame, but things take a creepy turn once you beat all the carnival games. You navigate the dark woods and see a cloaked figure transform the carnival workers into monsters. The carnival then turns nightmarish, with scarecrows with glowing eyes, the message in the duck game spelling out "GORY," and a floating puppet monster invading the Haunted Lab. This scared me, keep.

For NightmareFuel.Heroes Of The Storm:

  • The implications of the 'Tomb of the Spider Queen' map. Most other maps are just the heroes having a good ol' brawl. The Tomb of Spider Queen implies that the heroes are all trapped within the Spider Queen's lair, and only the winning team gets to leave, the losers doomed to be meals for the Spider Queen and her brood. Basically, that map isn't a WoW PvP-style battle taking place for whatever reason — it's a fight for survival. While one of the announcer's quotes is "Not all escape my tomb." when you lose, there's no implication that you get eaten. In fact, the overarching plot of the game (that the Nexus infinitely repeats the same battles on loop) sort of forbids anything bad happening. I also argue against every other map being "a good ol' brawl" since they all have equally real objectives.
  • Likewise, the implication of the 'Battlefield of Eternity'. It might be just a 'good ol' brawl' unlike the Tomb of Spider Queen, but the placing of your team is completely randomized. So imagine if you just picked a bonafide good guy like Tyrael or Thrall, then suddenly you get put into the side of Burning Hells and actively trying to win the Eternal Conflict for the Demons. Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!! And damn you random team placement! The same can be said if an evil hero gets put into the Angels side, might be good for us viewers, but for these guys who enjoys being evil? Pure nightmare. And that's scary for the players... how?
  • The Butcher's reveal video is hands down the first legit-scary reveal video. It starts with Tychus splitting off with Tyrael and Jaina in the Haunted Mines... Could use some grammar touch-ups and a little less speculation (and scary italics!), but this one works.
  • Every hero in the game has a separate set of lines for when they're cloned by Abathur's Ultimate Evolution heroic, save for Abathur himself. Though with their monotone delivery, broken speech, and a touch of Evil Sounds Deep, it just makes them sound incredibly off putting, especially in the cases of normally upbeat heroes like The Lost Vikings or Li Li. This one is good.
  • The Butcher in general is one of the most terrifying things in the history of anything ever. Really now? Anything ever? His description, appearance, his constant cry of "FRESH MEAT!!!", his sheer DPS with the right talents... This could stand be shortened, lose the overly-long description of Lamb, and cut the OVER-EXAGGERATION and scary italics! Otherwise it's okay.
    • The Butcher also has an ability called "Ruthless Onslaught" that has him shout "FRESH MEAT!!!"... This could probably just be baked into the main body.
      • Nightmare Retardant sets in when you see how unrealistically and humorously fast the Butcher's stubby legs are moving... Do we put funny things on Nightmare Fuel pages? Because this is true and incredibly funny.
  • Ka (the advisor for the Sky Temple) and the Raven Lord both have rather ominous voices. And?
  • Being eaten by Stitches's Gorge ability can be rather unnerving, especially with the special border that appears around your screen. ZCE. The effect isn't even that scary. It's a view from the inside of his mouth-stomach. More gross than scary.
  • Nova and Zeratul. The level of paranoia and fear you get from the knowledge... This is just stealth complaining (funnily enough, about stealth characters). This is paranoia fuel at best.
  • Even some of the Poking jokes can be scary or at least unnerving. Gul'dan's last "joke" reminds you of this fact.
Gul'dan: Don't let others fool you, it is much easier being green. In fact, (the sound of pouring and unnatural bubbling is heard) why don't we talk about it... over a drink? (cue sinister chuckling)
How is this scary? This game is rated T.
  • Varian's Colossus Smash callout isn't a badass one liner or threat, it's a blood curling howl that reverberates and doesn't even sound human. I think it sounds more heroic than anything. Judge for yourself. "Doesn't even sound human" is certainly a bit of an exaggeration.
  • Azmodan's Az'Guldan skin is unique in that it portrays an alternate reality where Gul'dan becomes host to Azmodan rather than seeking power from the Burning Legion. It's one thing to see Azmodan's usual ugly mug, but to see an orc, especially one as prolific as Gul'Dan, warped into something resembling Azmodan adds a whole new level of horror to his design. Decent.
  • Prime Evil Diablo. Gone is the hulking, boisterous Diablo that can occasionally produce a laugh. In his place in a stick thin, insectoid-like Diablo with a combined male and female voice, a very Xenomorph like appearance, two extra mouths on his shoulders and a bone chilling whisper. His hero-specific mount style has him crawl hastily against the ground in a very creepy manner, calling back to the Xenomorph comparison yet again. Even his jokes end up being more horrifying for the most part, funny only to him. This one's excellent.
  • Malthael, the Aspect of Death, who's whole kit is made to suck the souls of his targets until they die, by marking them with his trait and slowly grinding them to death. If you're hit with trait, you can faintly hear disembodied screaming as you whither away. Also decent. These three are good.
  • Any hero with an instant-death Heroic. If you're below the health threshold, you're going to die. Pyroblast in particular is horrifying... And back to the questionable ones. This is just paranoia fuel, especially since a large chunk of the entry is explaining ways to live through these.
  • Two words: "Consume Souls."
Mephisto: I see you now... NAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
    • To elaborate, said ultimate, courtesy of none-other than Mephisto, reveals all enemy heroes on the map after a short channel time, before detonating on them for a hefty amount of damage... First of all, this layout is terrible. This definitely reads like some responding instead of repairing. Also, this whole entry is just complaining about the ability. Like, it's not even trying to describe why it's scary, it's just explaining the mechanics and how his teammates can follow up on it. Consume Souls is a good example maybe, but it would have to be rewritten to focus on actual scary part - how you can't hide from it and the visual and sound effects.
