According to the last forecast, Irma is now located a few tens of kilometres south of Key West and will presumably make landfall tomorrow close to Tampa. And it's up to Cat 4 again.

urging people not to shoot their guns at Hurricane Irma.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Kindly fuck off with "lol Floridaman" bullshit. It annoys me at the best of times, and "lol let's just cut Florida off from the rest of the country" when we're in the middle of a massive natural disaster and are going to have a lot of people needing a lot of help from the rest of the country in the next few days is in incredibly poor taste.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. This definitely isn't a Florida-only phenomenon - seems like the unfunny meme flavor of the month is creating your own dumb Facebook event.
I've quit trying to convince my friends that dignifying these things with any response only makes it worse.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotJose is far away from land and a change in the major pressure systems is a) creating wind shear which is weakening it and b) reducing the steering winds. It is possible that in a week it will reach the Carolinas, though.
The tropical wave south of Cape Verde shows no evidence of hurricanicity yet.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThere were some EU models suggesting Jose would make a direct landfall on New York, but that's at least a week away, and models could change.
Right now, Jose is going to drift in the east central North Atlantic for a couple of days.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Double post: First words out of Key West since Irma's eye went over. Taken from the US Coast Guard Key West Facebook page:
Here is the summary:
1. The military folks who stayed in Key West during the hurricane are all ok.
2. Key West has no electricity, running water, cell phone service nor emergency services. They haven't accessed Trumbo, Truman Annex or Sigsbee housing areas yet, but hope to do soonest.
3. They went to the Naval Air Station at Boca Chica and the airfield only sustained minor damage. Good news for getting people and supplies to Key West.
4. They still expect more storm surge. Several boats that were on mooring balls and at piers are on land. "It's definitely not safe to return"!
5. Some essential military personnel will be returning soonest without families to help with the recovery efforts.
6. All military families must wait for permission before returning.
7. He could not confirm if any bridges were out, and is waiting for that report himself.
8. The Navy PAO is attempting to get a video up on the NAS Key West and CG Sector Facebook sites as soon as possible.
Will post more info when I get it. #Hurricane Irma
Over the last few hours, Irma has been heading straight north instead of northwest along the Gulf coast. This is probably a good thing all told, since being farther inland means the storm weakens faster, and the center of the storm now seems to be threading the needle between Tampa and Orlando. So instead of hitting Tampa directly at category 3, it now looks like it's going to pass between Tampa and Orlando as a category 1 or 2. Worst conditions for Orlando should start around midnight and be past by around 4:00 AM. That's probably going to be Irma's last gasp — Orlando is likely the last major population center that will get hurricane force winds, and it will continue to weaken as it goes north.
For me personally, I'm on the east side of Orlando, so my prognosis is a little worse than it was earlier today. I'm probably going to get hurricane conditions at category one, while before I was just expected to see tropical storm conditions. My power has flickered a few times (and I discovered that the battery is shot in the UPS my home theater, modem, and router are connected to, which means my cable box and home network have to spend five minutes rebooting every time the power blinks for a second), but hasn't gone down yet. If it doesn't go down before tomorrow morning, it's probably not going to. Here's hoping.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.huh, what that means is I'm probably not going to even get the 40mph winds the news was talking about if it's tracking more east. Power here's only flickered a couple times(which was actually odd since I live in the Panhandle, so winds weren't even all that gusty earlier in the day), so I guess I can just count myself lucky.

. Some European countries left their possessions relatively unprepared when Irma approached and now there is controversy.
And this is just the beginning of hurricane season proper.

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.Technically September is the climax month...
Also, there were difficulties at forecasts this year
.
Underfunding of weather and forecasting services at NWS and NOAA has been blamed for their often inaccurate forecasts of Irma's path. They got lucky that Irma did not become annular, otherwise it'd be very likely still at Cat 5 at landfall in Florida.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSeptember is actually pretty much the peak of hurricane season, at least in the Atlantic.
Anyway, I went to bed around 11:00 and just woke up again because the wind is so damn loud. Checked the news and they said the worst of it is past Orlando and it's down to category 1 anyway. The noise must be from the wind shifting direction. I never did lose power and from what I can see through my windows the street is clear without any flooding or anything, so looks like I came through relatively unscathed, but I do have some friends further west whose power went down.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

Welp, Bay County is officially under a Tropical Storm Warning, but since Irma is appearing to stay towards the Big Bend area and doesn't seem to be drifting much more west, thankfully it looks like we don't need to leave. Gonna get a bit wet here though!
