Xombie is an old flash animation series about, you guessed it, a post-apocalyptic world in which the dead have risen. This caught my interest back when it was on Newgrounds in like... 2002? 2005? It was one of those early flash animations you remember getting into back when Kickstarter didn't exist, Pewdiepie wasn't a thing, and Newgrounds was the main platform for animated projects.
The plot focused on a girl named Zoe who, after surviving a fall from a helicopter, finds herself in a crypt guarded by a reanimated man named Dirge and his pet dog Cerberus. The two undeads make it their mission to get Zoe back to a human colony, but the journey is perilous and fraught with questions about Dirge's reanimated state, the true nature of the reanimated corpses, and a mysterious group of armored creatures that seem to want Dirge's head.
That was Xombie: Dead on Arrival and, as previously implied, it'd oooooold.
The series took a nosedive when the creator decided to release a novel that rewrote certain points of the story - which would be fine by itself, I mean, writers do this all the time these days. The problem is that the animated series wasn't finished, and during it's final two episodes IIRC Zoe's character was changed and some strange additions were made to the plot, and the reasoning for this was that you should go and read the novel to figure out why these changes were made/how they occurred. In the original cartoon, Zoe doesn't have an eyepatch or an exploding teddy bear - in the final two episodes, she does - just to name a few.
The series continued in a comic book format as Xombie: Reanimated with an older, more kick-ass Zoe and a new reanimate named Gallows. Unfortunately, to my awareness, this series never concluded.
And now there's Xombie: Dead Ahead, which I assume to be a continuation of one of these stories.
Hey, Samurai Jack, Dragonball, Super Mario Bros Z, Twin Peaks, and Invader Zim all got to come back, Maybe everything does get a return.
