Vanity Projects occur in both real life and fiction. However, because of the negative connotations of the term "vanity project" and the subjective nature of this topic, the examples listed here are all in-universe. Examples that are not in-universe should only be listed under a work's YMMV tab to prevent this page from turning into a massive instance of Complaining About Shows You Dont Like.

I checked in Ask The Tropers, and this is not allowed. Something is either YMMV or it's not.

So which is this?

It's not even listed as a YMMV trope, so that paragraph block looks hugely out of place.

Personally, it should be IUEO. We got the In-Universe examples listed, and it would be problematic when made YMMV. Either that, or make it Trivia on the condition that it was an admitted case.

Trivia with Word of God confirmation still technically allows for In-Universe examples, so I'm voting for Trivia.

Also, that paragraph needs to be gutted.

Aren't In-Universe examples of YMMV tropes objective by default? That usually means they're either direct references or characters having opinions or reactions to stuff, and those are objectively in the work.

Another Duck has it right. Despite what ATT may have said, those are the correct rules for any YMMV page. In-universe examples go on the main page; all others on the YMMV page.

So, the only real question here is should this actually be listed as YMMV?

(We can remove the paragraph in question in any case, since it doesn't belong if this isn't YMMV, and it's the default if it is.)

My preferences, in order:

  1. In-universe only.
  2. Trivia (with attribution)
  3. YMMV

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.

So this page has been around since 2014. Is there an archived YKTTW draft that would point to what the original intended page type was?

ATT correctly identified that the page itself isn't YMMV.

Yes, at the top of the thread, YKTTW is linked. The page's sponsor said "I've revised Vanity Project so the defintion exclusively focuses on the negative connotations of the term. The examples listed are limited to in-universe only."

I'm not certain they understand the site ruels at that time, because they later claim "the examples listed on the YKTTW's page are in-universe. However, it becomes subjective only if it is cited on a real-life work's YMMV page."

Limiting this to IUEO seems like the least work. If we decide to make it Trivia, I think the description should be rewritten to be less negative. I'm against making it YMMV at all.
