This game is a hoot. Easy to understand but filled with tactical considerations and flexibility. The puzzles and exploration are fairly rudimentary thus far, but give it some replayability and a chance to enjoy the world. The performance takes a hit sometimes though.

Wish my store hadn't forgotten to call me earlier so I could play this more over my long weekend.

Peach sure knows how to make an entrance. Makes me kind of sad that she's back to her usual shtick in Odyssey.

Luigi + Rabbid Luigi is my favorite party. Luigi's snipe is super clutch, and Rabbid Luigi's Dash hits so hard and heals him. Very reliable. The others do have their useful niches though.

Eh, my current standby party is Mario, Luigi, and Rabbid Peach. Double Sentries are good at cover-busting, double Blasters are good general purpose weapons, maxed oversight on the bros is excellent at killing basically anything short of a boss or midboss... Oh, and healing makes for a good Plan B.

Of course, I'm experimenting with Rabbid Yoshi, and things may still change when I get Yoshi proper.

Why was Greater-Scope Villain taken out of Bowser's entry in the Character Page? Jr. is the Big Bad, Bowser was responsible for Jr. (being his father), why was it taken out?

Because he had nothing to do with his son's shenanigans, what's with him being on vacation and returning only at the end. He also doesn't really feature prominently aside from getting hijacked by a demon and becomes a flying Sectopod the Final Boss.

Okay then, why were the following taken out?:

From Rabbid Mario's section

  • Adorkable: After putting up a manly front, he attempts to impress Mario by singing him the Mario theme.

From The Inventor's section

I mean, let's face it, most who play the game come because it's a Mario spinoff (since the Rabbids are a bunch of Base Breaking Characters, to say it lightly). Likewise, a link to the Adorkable page is on the Establishing Character Moment entry for Rabbid Mario.

And now, a Did You Know Gaming? episode on Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

Highlights:

  • Influences for the game include Worms for the gameplay and The Fifth Element for the weaponry.
  • When Ubisoft had a set time to show their pitch to Nintendo, the director went the extra mile and came up with a gameplay demo made from scratch. The models for Mario and Luigi even surprised Shigeru Miyamoto himself.
  • Yes, the director and the other members of the development team lost morale because of the leak and the backlash. (Moral of the story: Just because you think Rabbids in general have become insufferable now doesn't mean it's a great idea to lash out at the developers because they're people too, dang it. So don't be jerks because a game has Rabbids in it.)
  • Music composer for the game, Grant Kirkhope, was surprised at how the game was a crossover with Mario and thought he couldn't hold a candle to Koji Kondo.

You know, there's nothing quite as annoying as losing a hero right at the end because the game decided the 2nd boss should take up an extra square to the side after being killed.

I use whatever hero seems right for the job. Rabbid Mario is quite good at taking out groups of bucklers that try to form a shield wall, thanks to his Boom dash, if Peach can get close, she can obliterate anything, all sorts of fun tricks.

Rabbid Yoshi is really powerful if you're taking two humans: the Sight skills match up perfectly with Scaredy Rabbid.

Beat the game. Rabbid Wario and Waluigi were amazing. I don't know why Nintendo is reluctant to use them in the RPG spin-offs, but Ubisoft made the right call. Didn't like how late Yoshi came in, but not a big deal. Final battle was great. You gotta feel sorry for Bowser. He just wants to see his son sooner, and he's possessed yet again and is shot down by Mario yet again.

Everyone had a useful niche, but Luigi and Rabbid Luigi were my go to team. Luigi's sniper + ink effect + triple shot + high damage weapons + diversionary remote bomb made him a beast. Rabbid Luigi smacked enemies hard, healed up himself and everyone else greatly, and had what was essentially an exploding sniper rifle. Great stuff. Really liked how movement worked. Hopping across the map felt great. Main quibbles were a few bugs, including a full on crash (thankfully just during a cutscene), a wonky camera, and Mario's forced deployment, which severely limits team builds. Wasn't too difficult, but I did have to think ahead quite often. So yeah, great game, and I've still got a few things to do.

Well, I've mostly beaten the game.

All challenges conquered, all chapters golden'd save the multiplayer ones, all that's left is the treasure chests and purchasing all weapons.

Out of the Ultimate challenges, #1 is definitely the worst. The escort and escape missions were doable, and although the one that hits you with every enemy ever is nasty... once you learn the order and positioning, you just need a bit of luck to get through.

  1. 1 is awful, though.

I didn't realize this game had a dedicated thread! It's my first and only Switch game so far and I'm really enjoying it. It's also my first turn-based strategy game (I think?) and my first Rabbids game, the latter being the possible reason I haven't learned to hate the Rabbids yet.

They're a lot more tolerable when you realize they're basically expies of the gremlins (from, y'know, Gremlins).

Beat Rabbid Kong last night, and I think tonight I'll look around the Ancient Gardens for more treasure chests and do some challenges before moving on.

I'd recommend trying to do challenges before moving into new worlds if you want to use everybody. You won't have enough money to keep weapons up to date if you just go with what you pick up from normal story stuff.

So far I'm up to 3-1, and in spite of occasional bouts of frustration I'm loving the game.

Beep-0's snark is a major contributor to that. grin

Now I'm going back to get the challenges, which get much easier when you occasionally reset all the skill purchases to make task-specific character builds (so to speak), as my one attempt at 3-1 wound up with me getting my ass kicked. sad

Yeah. It'll be hard to go to other games that don't let you reset skill trees for free, the costs are essentially just a time sink when you really think about it.

World 3 is when they introduce the last of the enemies and enemy abilities, so now they can start cranking up the difficulty by formations and level layouts.

[up]I really wish there was the ability to "lock" certain skills when resetting; part of why I hate doing it is because I need to reaquire the movement, secondary weapon, and second ability unlocks every single time.

World 3 is when they introduce the last of the enemies and enemy abilities, so now they can start cranking up the difficulty by formations and level layouts.

And to me it seems they did just that in the last World, though maybe it's just that I've become instantly shit. tongue Since the Phantom (World 3 boss) I've been squeaking by on character survival.

  • Phantom I had only Mario left with like 89 health when I got in the kill-shot.
  • In 4-1 I didn't have any knockouts but Luigi had only 23 points left while standing right next to an enemy when I potted the seventh enemy to win (and if I hadn't Luigi would've probably bit it, as the guy standing right next to him was at full 320 health and had his shield up).
  • Those smashers in 4-2 are a real pain in the butt, whacking like half Luigi's life and a third of Mario's when they connect, and with the map layout there's no real escape options other than "kill them first"... which is kind of difficult when they have 500 health. tongue

The best way to deal with Smashers I've found, is to stack everything in Mario's M-Power.

The Hammer, Steely Stare... just about everything becomes a Smasher killer under a 70% power boost.

I've found that maxing out Hero Sight and Steely Stare, then giving Mario and Luigi the best weapons you can with Push or Bounce can one-turn a Smasher basically every time, with either Mario or Luigi (using both means twice the kills).

The catch with Steely Stare is that it has a damage penalty. Even maxed out, it doesn't hit as hard as a normal shot to make up for having three of them.

I prefer to have Mario buff Luigi's Steely Stare, and then use Hero Sight the next turn. Otherwise, you end up with Luigi wasting all his shots on one person because the Smasher's huge healthpool absorbs most of them.

I'm guessing this is why they force you to include a Rabbid: being able to combine that with Yoshi's 100% crit chance would get very out of hand.

Actually, my tactic is setup oversight on either Mario or Luigi, then provoke a Smasher with that character and let the extra shots do their thing. It only gets better if Push or Bounce effects trigger.

Only issue is, that it takes time, something that you're often lacking, either because of turn targets or just the rate the stage is throwing Smashers at you.

It's on sale for $30 at Best Buy

It's a steal at that price.

EDIT: Oh, it seems you can't actually buy it. I think the price must have been dropped by mistake.
