Forest

Seeing that the bandit before him was unconcious - so he did hit him - Fyterion charged after one of the remaining bandits, this time making it a proper charge, building up speed to hit one of them from behind - as non lethally as one could hit someone with a mace from behind from full speed.

Using 'Trample': If you move at least 30 feet straight toward a target and then hit it with a melee weapon attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 3d6 + your strength modifier of the damage of your weapon.

The last standing bandit, upon seeing the charging centaur, quickly came to a conclusion:

"WAIT! I SURRENDER!!" he shouted, dropping both his weapons. He then fell to his knees, nervously eyeing everyone around him.

(the other bandits who were still conscious continued to flee.)

End Round Three. If his surrender is accepted and the other bandits allowed to escape- they are all about to reach the relative safety of the clearing's perimeter- the fight will be over.

Valakyr let the bandit running from him escape into the forest, before turning and noticing that the bandit that had been fighting the centaur had surrendered. How wise of him; the fight had turned bad for them very, very quickly, and surrender was indeed the wisest course of action.

Walking over to the nearest unconscious bandit, Valakyr knelt down and channeled a smidgen of healing energy into him, just enough to stop him from bleeding out. That only took a second, and the dragonborn walked over to the still conscious bandit, not bothering to hide his wings.

"Your friends have either fled or are unconscious," he informed the human, his tone surprisingly light. "As a cleric of Bahamut, I am bound to administer justice, but I promise that I will not harm you more than necessary unless you attempt to flee." With that, the dragonborn set down his pack, and pulled out various medical supplies before straightening up and looking around at his new companions.

"I assisted all of you in this fight, as well as provided healing magic for you," he told the centaur. "I don't want payment for my help- helping others is the will of my deity, after all- but I would ask, as a favor, that you none of you visit more harm on this man, or the rest of his captured ilk. He has been defeated, and now he falls under my care, and I shall treat him like any kind and moral sentient being would."

With that, the hulking warrior kneeled down and started to bandage the captive bandit's wounds. "I assume their is no need to restrain you?" He asked, his tone jovial, as if there hadn't just been a massive battle. "Make no mistake," he continued, "if you flee, I will not hesitate to harm you, and it shall be up to Lady Luck whether the final blow I strike will kill or merely render you unconcious. And if you do survive, I shall not be so kind the second time. So please, don't provoke me."

"Bah, don't want payment. Yeah, well, your help isn't going unanswered. Gift begets gift after all." Gabatim noted the cleric addressed Fyterion, but he wouldn't let that point go. "And refusing gifts is most unkind. So, unless you're looking for the other villains coincidentally abducting travelers around here, you should join our merry band. There's silver at the end of our trip, also singing, bread, and Mialee on the way."

The vaquero said nothing to the arbalist, merely relieving the marauder of his scimitar and crossbow and remaining bolts as well as retrieving his arrow. Normally, Gabatim couldn't remove those without the target bleeding out, but the cleric had already done the deed and worked over the damage—and then some—with that healing ability.
Gabatim quickly passed the maruader's former crossbow and bolts to the druid before Fyterion could refuse, but that didn't make the ex-arbalist harmless. Hmm, well, the vaquero could bind the marauder, but he may need that lasso for whatever actual beast is lurking out here. Plus that fight hadn't been quiet. Everything and their cousins must know that they were out there now.

"So, you were the only one wise enough to actually stand down," Gabatim addressed the remaining marauder. He only just managed not to kill the druid so, "As it turns out, you get out of the woods alive. But we need your help with that. I'm assuming you weren't running through the woods blindly. So, what's your main paths in and out of here?"

The vaquero assumed if the marauder talked he could compare their routes with the clerics and where the group had already tread. Of course, if the marauders had a do not go warning anywhere, well that's the way.

End of Combat

Each PC earns 50 XP. There are only 4 bandits left in the clearing, only one of whom is conscious. If searched each one has a scimitar, a light crossbow, leather armor, and 14 silver pieces.

Also, by showing mercy to his attackers, Valakyr feels filled with Inspiration.

"I-I will not flee, I swear!" the captured bandit managed to say.

To the vaquero, he responded "We do not go deep into the forest. That's the other people's territory. We just hang around the edges to catch the unwary. We saw the campfire and assumed it was a lone traveler. We were not expecting such strong resistance."

"Keep running, animals!" Mialee shouted at the fleeing bandits "You can burn in hell - all the hells!"

Taking a breath, she looked at the remaining (conscious) bandit, the unconscious bandits, her two apparent adventuring companions, and the cleric. Her smile widened at the dragonborn's words, and she shot a glare at the cowboy. How rude.

"Oh of course, I wouldn't wish to sully your god's name by paying you for your charity," she said, rifling through the pockets of the downed bandits. "14 silver split 3 ways, that's three silver and six copper for each of us, and we can use the 2 leftover copper for expenses..." she talked to herself, doing the math as she looked at each coinpurse she collected.

Forest

Fyterion slowly came to a halt as the bandits fled or surrendered, opting not to chase them - although he did get to the one who surrendered. Looking down to the surrendering enemy he now noticed that the vaquero passed him the weapons of the bandit.

Well, it certainly wouldn't harm him to have them, so the Centaur tok the crossow with a thanking bow of the head before facing the bandit again "I won't harm you, do not worry... but do say, were you hired to stalk this part of the forest?" Asking couldn't hurt after all and it wasn't completely unreasonable to think that the cult - if there was one - could have hired bandits to stalk the forest as some form of "guards".

"No one!" The bandit quickly added. "We just decided to rob travelers because this region has fallen into poverty and we are not as strong as you adventurers" he said almost with disdain. "We have no leader; we distribute the gains evenly between ourselves."

He sighed, then continued. "And, we have no idea who the others are. We have been avoiding them- honestly, they are creepy. They wear black cloaks and occasionally bring animals or bound people with them. They have left us alone so far, so we just continued our activities and ignored them."

Suddenly, he smiled. "I know where they go, tho. If I point you in their direction, will you let me go?'

Valakyr nodded, crossing his arms. "Providing important information that will lead to the possible rescue of others? That seems a worthy trade. Although I must ask my new companions-" He gave the adventuring party's members appraising looks- "-to agree to let you go, as long as you both tell the truth, and promise not to resort to banditry the second we leave your sight."

He finished bandaging the bandit, and pulled the man to his feet, looking him dead in the eyes. "And believe me, I will know if you make a false promise or stray from the path of light. And I will not be so merciful then."

With that, he glanced at his new companions. "What say you? Shall we let him leave, or turn him over to the proper authorities? And what shall we do after we decide? I am very spent, and a night's rest would do all of us good, I think. Besides, it would be wiser to investigate more in the morning, since only one of our number can see in the dark."

"Unfortunately, we cannot spare the time for more than a brief respite," Mialee said to Valakyr. "There will be no wisdom to searching in the morn - the reason why, my dear scaled cleric, is that there is a difference between wisdom and knowledge."

She cleared her throat. "The disappearances we are investigating have happened near the evening, from what we've been told. Sleeping away the night will waste the time we have to track down these vagabonds when they're active, and means they could take yet another victim before we can resume the search tomorrow evening. In addition, the local Noble, Sir Yentl... Mann...."

She groaned at the name. Why did humans resort to such crude jokes for naming their progeny?

"...Has sent his own men out to investigate in the recent past, so they will have already taken measures to hide themselves away well. Our best hope is to catch them in the act, and hopefully this miserable excuse of a man will help with that before he turns his life around."

Sure, the vaquero would be willing to let the marauder go. He'd have to when the town guards threw the man into a cell. And that was quite the press on his luck. It's not like Gabatim forgot about putting an arrow through his heart.

"Well, all you did was heavily wound the mantis's favorite druid here. And the cleric could overfly the place and look for signs without you. And you already said it was deep into the forest. Why shouldn't we march you out there, and just abandon you there, if you don't point out the way?" Gabatim let the proposal sink in before adding, "Alas, the others seem to consent that you can go. Fine." Indeed. Once they cleared out the whatever-it-was, the county's half-baked guards could stumble through the shallow part of the woods long enough to catch the marauders. Not like their work here was a secret anymore.

"You may go, after you do some pointing and marching all the way to the belly of the beast."

To the cleric he added, "It must be tonight though, for as Mialee was trying to say, we had the privilege of questioning the local notable of this county with four people present. It took pressing from four people to get vital information from the man, like the time of the disappearances. I will tell the rest..."

Fyterion nodded "Of course we will let you go if you give us the information -and promise to end your life of thievery." He paused "In fact... you are a good shot, if you truly do this for the reasons you said, I would be happy to take you in, and teach you in the tenets of Mannad - including to live of the land through hunting." He let the proposal sink in, indeed he would be willing to, after all if what the bandit said was true, then the best way would be to teach him how to survive without having to resort to robbing - and Mannad did smile upon those with a prowess for the bow.

"You want me to-!?" the bandit began to protest, but the vaquero's tone left no room for argument. "Alright, alright! But I'm only taking you as far as their lair, is that okay?"

Without waiting for their answer, the man got off his knees -slowly- and began walking northeast, exiting the clearing after making sure the adventurers were following him.

He then walked along a dark, long, twisting path in the woods.

Eventually, they came to another clearing- a larger one, with a rather macabre monument at is center:

"They're in there" the bandit said, pointing at the tomb. "But I'm not going inside. This is as far as I go."

Valakyr sighed, nodding at the elf who he assumed was Mialee. "A fair point. I will assist you all, as I am a deft hand with a mace, but be warned that I won't be able to provide all but the most minuscule amounts of healing."

The human fighter seemed reluctant to let the man go, which Valakyr could understand- he had injured the druid, after all, and tried to kill them. The dragonborn, perhaps wisely, decided to ignore that and simply nod once more when the man pointed out that they had to investigate during the night. "Well, it shall be an honor to fight by your side. I saw how you defended your comrades in battle- a worthy skill."

The druid offered to teach the man the tenets of Mannad- a goddess of nature and fertility, he believed, although he could be wrong. Although he may not have been a follower himself, he had no qualms about traveling with a follower of such a benevolent deity. Once again, he wondered where the elf had learned such sinister spells, but decided to simply ask later. They didn't appear evil in nature- even Bahumat could grant spells like Inflict Wounds, after all- merely dangerous.

Thankfully, the bandit agreed without any hassle, and led them to a tomb in the center of the forest. Valakyr gazed upon it in distaste.

"I wonder if any undead roam the inside?" He muttered, more to himself than the others. "You may go," he told the bandit, nodding at him. "May you live peacefully from now on." The dragonborn let his tone turn threatening, implying an or else. Turning to his companions, he gestured at the macabre stone structure. "So how do you wish to handle this?"

"Someone put all this work into a lair in the woods?" That stone by itself must have cost a fortune. To each their own, Gabatim supposed.
And even better they were the middle of a clearing right under the moonlight. Yep, if these fellows had a first-time-on-the-job sentry who was stoned to boot, the group still was definitely spotted by now. And this was a group who evaded patrols (whoever incompetent) from the county, kept marauders at bay, and maintained their lair superbly; that is not rabble.

Mulling all this over, Gabatim was going to just say nothing to the cleric releasing the last marauder, but then, they were turning the man loose deep in the woods without his weapons. "I'll tell you what," the vaquero said evenly. "Find yourself a nice hiding spot, and we'll escort you back to town. Or as said, you could just leave now."
To his own, the vaquero continued, "Well, first, I recommend we step back some to pow-wow in the woods. We'd get at least some concealment. Also, unless Fyterion's mantis can sneak in and out of there and report back, we would do best to just call them out—or light a fire at the mouth of the place and smoke them out. Stumbling blindly through their lair is just begging to be trapped or picked off. " Gabatim thought a moment.

"I suppose we could wait as well. I doubt they have full running farms and smithies in there, but we have no idea how long we'd be waiting or if there are still prisoners locked away in there. I'd hope the mantis will be up to the task, but failing that, I favor smoking them out."

"We can't take the risk that he's playing us the fool and will call out to his friends the very moment we go inside...." Mialee said.

"Unless one of you has a Spell of Sleep, we'll need to resort to using a more... blunt method," she added, taking a look at the nearby rocks on the ground.

Fyterion thought for a bit about the best course of action along with the rest, indeed he could send his friend in, after all they were a mere insect - one that was native to this realm to boot - rather unassuming in the midst of a forest. He was about to kneel down as he noticed Mialee looking at the rocks, guessing her intend he subtly changed position, stepping to the side - between her and the bandit. "No, this isn't right, if anything a rope will suffice."

"True, but that doesn't change much" Gabatim barely reacted to the green cannon and her idea with the stones. Though that was a bit odd. He thought she'd go for the blasts. "Someone will have to take up the rear if we storm their layer, and even if we smoke them out, "take a glance behind you" is always going to be a good idea. Not like all of them have to be in there sucking their thumbs right now."

"If you were truly wary, you could march him in first, but then we would have to rescue him—or you know, he could just cry out and warn our actual problem or, if he's a spy as you say, lead us into some disaster. If we tie him up out here, well, it's just rope with no one watching him. I bet he'd appreciate the gift, but wouldn't do us much good."

Gabatim turned solemn for a moment. "And most importantly, we just agreed to let the guy go in exchange for showing this place." The vaquero resumed an air of levity. "Besides, you gonna deny Fyterion here a future apprentice? Who else will have a better story as to how they met their teacher?"

Valakyr shook his head, the dragonborn's expression darkening. "We will not knock him out with a blow to the head," he growled. "Normally, I would not presume to order any of you around, but as a healer, I have seen the trauma and dismay head wounds can cause. Slamming a brick against his skull could easily kill him, now or later, and if he doesn't die, it could seriously impair his senses. We are not monsters- we will treat our captives with a level of decency appropriate of that of sentient, sapient beings."

With that, he listened to what the others had to say. Indeed, the human was right, and Valakyr found himself nodding along with him. They would get along well, he decided. The man was courageous enough, and he seemed good of heart.

The centaur was indeed another person he'd gladly fight alongside. From what little he'd seen of him, he seemed kind, and he followed a goddess that the dragonborn could heartily respect. While he didn't know if Bahamut had ever met her, he had the distinct feeling they would get along swimmingly, or whatever deities did when they met.

The elf was... interesting. She was not cowardly, that was for sure. But her easy manner when referring to killing and harming her enemies was not something he particularly liked about her; he took up the mace and shield to protect and serve, and he took no relish when fighting foes that weren't particularly heinous. However, she seemed intelligent, and he had already witnessed her arcane knowledge.

"Sending the mantis in seems to be out best bet at finding out what we face," he affirmed. " I volunteer to lead the charge, or assault, or other course of action we decide on if it poses greater danger to those up front. My armor and scales are hard, and they will protect me. "

Having agreed on sending the mantis into the tomb to scout ahead, the adventurers watched the insect crawl right through the open entrance.

If anyone inspects any of the walls, they will notice a symbol recurring several times: a star above a rising moon.

It took almost half an hour for the bug to return to its master. It then chittered, "Many creatures, inside. Woman lying on table. Surrounded by chanting humans" although only the centaur could understand it.

"There goes hanging back and smoking them out." Gabatim thought of noisemaking to draw them out, but it was a flip of the coin whether they would pause their ritual or speed it up. Come to think of it, all they knew was that the woman was in these cultists custody, not necessarily being cut up at the moment. Meh, don't be cowardly.

"Onward then. And we don't know how narrow the corridors are or where the many creatures inside are situated. And we don't know what they plan to do with their guest. Probably nothing good. Rampaging through the halls will probably be unwise. I say we creep forward, letting the mantis travel a step ahead and warning of threats as it goes. We'll likely have to capture at least one cultist to get a layout of the place."

The vaquero stroked his chin before solemnly adding. "And remember, there is no shame in retreat if necessary. The county's bands don't even know this place's location, and if one decides to stick with things to be brave, then they will certainly continue picking off travelers for whatever reason. Oh, and I'm sure no one likes the way their head looks on stone walls."

Hm...backup... The vaquero idly wondered about having the marauder summon his companions. They couldn't be comfortable "working" with these other fellow sin the woods, and they would probably find some bravery for a nice sum.

Valakyr's expression turned even grimmer as the news was relayed, and he folded his wings. When the human fighter suggested stealth, the dragonborn shook his head. "I'm a two-hundred pound winged dragonborn wearing heavy armor and carrying a shield," he pointed out dryly. "And your druid is a centaur. With us along, you wouldn't be able to sneak up on a deaf man."

He adjusted his shield. "Besides, it sounds to me like the cultists inside are about to sacrifice someone, and time is of the essence," he growled. "We need to move as quickly as possible, otherwise we risk them completing their profane ritual and slaughtering the woman inside."

The cleric drew his mace once again. "I propose a direct, frontal assault."
