OK, we officially have four members, so we can begin. These are:

  • Sergey_Smirnov as Fyterion, a Neutral Good Centaur Druid
  • Century Eye as Gabatim, a Lawful Good Human Fighter
  • Cwest55385 as Whistler, a Neutral Good Kenku Rogue.
  • nman as Mialee Meliamne, a Chaotic Good High Elf Warlock.

No more players will be accepted *for now* but I might allow more later.

The first question is: how do we begin? Remember, this is sandbox play, you tell me where you want to go and do and I tell you what happens. So we need a place to start. I've decided it should be a small town. But not exactly where in the town, or how the characters meet.

We can use the old "you all meet in an inn" thing. Or if you prefer, you can start already being a party, discussing what your next move should be.

Opinions? Once a decision is made, I'll post the actual Game Thread.

About the lawful good human fighter slot, you left out "Gabatim." (Although Century Eye is an excellent tag if I say so myself...)

I took this list

  • The P Cs are members of a trade caravan. They could be merchants, or employed by the merchants as guards, animal handlers, freight handlers, craftsmen, cooks, book-keepers, scouts, entertainers, or whores. They might also be family members of others in the caravan, or people travelling for another reason (pilgrims, diplomats) and staying with the caravan for safety.
  • The P Cs are assembled at the reading of a will of a distant relative or a friend. Some P Cs may thus be related, although perhaps only by marriage, while some might be strangers known only to the deceased.
  • The P Cs are passengers on a commercial long-distance vehicle - a train, ship, plane, or spaceship are some possibilities.
  • The P Cs are drafted from various prison facilities to form a special ops suicide squad - with the promise of a pardon if successful, of course.
  • A mutual enemy of the P Cs drops hints about or outright invites them all to some event or location. The P Cs show up and negotiate an alliance, probably to get them out of the trap set by the enemy.
  • The P Cs are members of a small village. Some local disturbance or uprising forces them to band together for the sake of the village.
  • The P Cs went to school or university together. Something happens at the reunion. Or someone (or something) from their old school days comes back to haunt them all.
  • The P Cs knew each other long ago and made some sort of pact which becomes significant when NPC members of the group start dying.
  • The P Cs knew each other in a past life (or several past lives). They become aware of this and seek each other out to find out why, banding together when they learn the Awful Truth.
  • The P Cs are already an established group of "troubleshooters for hire" or "traders looking for a cargo". Simply begin the campaign with the introduction of a significant client.
  • The P Cs are new recruits to a cause - either an organized force such as the police or military, an organization such as a trader's guild or environmental lobby group, or a company. They may be assigned to work together or work on a single problem from different sides.
  • The P Cs all answer an advertisement seeking people with certain skills. An exploratory or scientific expedition is the likely result, but people might also advertise for guards, escorts, business professionals, or entertainers for other purposes.
  • The P Cs are press-ganged into service on a ship, or in a military unit somewhere far from home.
  • The P Cs know each other by correspondence (carrier pigeon, pony express, mail, Internet, crystal balls) about a shared interest. Something threatens that interest, and they band together to combat it.
  • The P Cs simply wake up near each other, with no memory of who they are or what they are doing here (wherever that may be). For a twist, maybe they remember each other, but not themselves.
  • The P Cs are all incarcerated in a prison, either legitimately or arbitrarily. Or they might all break out or be released from a prison and have to work together to survive outside.
  • The P Cs are captured and used as slaves. A variant sees them captured and studied as specimens, either by a known sentient species or aliens. Or maybe they are to be used as food.
  • The P Cs have just graduated from school or university and decide to go into some sort of business together.
  • A natural disaster or hostile attack strikes an area or town. The P Cs seem to be the only survivors, at least initially.
  • The P Cs all share a mutual friend, who invites them to a party or other social event.
  • The P Cs are members of a secret society, either religious, mystical, political, or scientific. They work on a mission to further the society's ends, and may end up questioning those ends.
  • The P Cs work for a volunteer organization (militia, disaster relief, humanitarian, environmentalist, etc) and are assigned to work on a mission together.
  • The P Cs are rivals in some sort of competition. A cross-country race or a treasure hunt are classic examples. Perhaps they cut deals and form a grudging alliance to beat other rivals, or maybe an external threat forces them to cooperate.
  • The P Cs are the significant crew of a new mission of exploration and discovery, either assigned from the military or recruited for the purpose.
  • The P Cs are a retired group of troubleshooters. Their arch-enemy escapes from prison/slavery/stasis/another dimension and they must reform to fight him one last time.
  • The rest of the world is going insane, or is being abducted or replaced by aliens, or they have simply vanished with no explanation, and the P Cs seem to be the only ones unaffected.
from the net. My favorite being
The PCs all answer an advertisement seeking people with certain skills. An exploratory or scientific expedition is the likely result, but people might also advertise for guards, escorts, business professionals, or entertainers for other purposes.

Oops, sorry about that CE, corrected now. And your vote has been counted, it certainly sounds promising.

Anybody else?

I'm always a fan of starting in an inn for whatever reason, be it that expedition or what have you.

Also this thread wasn't mentioned in the signup so they might not all have seen it. I only saw it on accident coming into this forum for another thread.

Oops number two! [lol] Ok, going to correct that now.

Edit: link added.

So, we have two votes for the inn, with a request of some sort as the lure. I'll wait one more day in case anyone else has a different opinion, then I'm launching the game.

I like the idea of coming together in an Inn for an advertisement, since it sets the stage for the characters to meet each other for the first time if they aren't already friends. And besides, the novelty of You All Meet in an Inn hasn't worn off on me yet :D

I'm also a fan of the fact that we have characters that run the gauntlet from neutral to lawful to chaotic good. Always nice to have some diversity.

Currently composing a post but say I've reconsidered, I... I kinda want a bit more variety in my character names, am I allowed to retcon Magnus' name to be Fyterion?

Since we're barely beginning, and it's not a major detail, I'll allow it.

This time. wink

Is that post at least once a day or a limit of once per day?

Both. My earlier version of this game failed because I gave players too much time between posts. Conversely, I've had times when I game-mastered games here and I came and found everyone had posted several pages of stuff in one night (!) So yeah ideally, one post a day is best. Of course I am flexible on this and might even change it later (that's what the Discussion Thread is for) but for now let's go with it.

(Alternatively, we could use "post once until everyone including the GM has posted, then you may post again" even on the same day. What do you guys think of that?)

On the subject of getting disadvantage due to "evil" acts, how evil are we talking? I'm assuming that by evil, you mean stuff that everyone agrees is evil, which I can get behind, but what magnitude will get you disadvantage from what I'm assuming are the gods? Like, skullduggery- taking off without paying, minor pickpocketing, rudeness, ect, or more major acts, like murder of innocents, stealing from the poor, that kinda thing?

I'm asking because, in general, there's a fine line between being more chaotic, and more being evil- Whistler, for example, probably wouldn't pickpocket anything, but if he had the chance, he'd probably slip off without paying for a minor drink or something.

Also, are we gonna get a discord set up for this, or are we just gonna go with a regular discussion thread?

And I'd have to vote for the "if everyone posts, including the GM, you can post again" kinda thing, since that seems more reasonable.

First, it isn't the gods granting these bonuses and penalties; it's meta-gaming- just assume it's karma. And yes I know that's not how real karma its supposed to work! tongue

Second, a Good being must protect innocents (that is, any being who is not a threat to others). Any act that hurts innocents is Bad- a minor inconvenience does not count, but for example, robbing from someone who cannot afford it is bad. So yeah, just use common sense here.

I'm starting to lean for the Posting By Turns rule myself. But I'll wait until the others have had their say.

Meanwhile, expect another Game Post from me later today.

Ah, I see. I'm assuming that you have to be intentionally doing something "bad?" Being tricked into working for the Big Bad and then getting even more screwed over because you were trying to do good isn't fun. Nor is doing something without realizing that the person you're inconveniencing can't handle it- say, burning down someone's barn to kill a pack of Ghouls without realizing that they won't be able to get by without it, which also represents a "for the greater good" kinda thing.

But of course, I trust your judgement.

Definitely, intention and free will matters. Advantage is a reward for playing your alignment correctly. So being charmed, misjudged by others etc. does not count. Note that you can have only one Advantage/Disadvantage this way, and after it takes effect its gone. (It's also unrelated to the A/D bonuses given by certain abilities.)

OK, since the majority of us lean towards the Posting-By-Turns rule, I'm making it official.

Also, remember that combat turns go by Dexterity. Which means that in battle you would go in this order:

  • Whistler
  • Mialee
  • Gabatim
  • Magnus

Similarly, your foe(s) turn will be based on their Dex ex. a dex 12 Monster attacks at same time as Magnus.

(Sergei, you need to update your character's name in his sheet too.)

It's OK.

Oh, another thing I forgot to mention: Experience. Yes, we'll keep track of XP. Points earned from battle will be split evenly between those who contribute to the battle (if you sit there watching, you get nothing.) Further, you must use your class abilities to gain exp. in your class (makes sense no?) This includes use of weapon proficiences.

The good news is that you don't have to resolve *every* conflict with violence. If you can say, use your skills to convince a monster not to attack a village, you earn XP just as if you had defeated it! wink

Edit: Second GM post made. Feel free to post again everyone. You may interact with each other at the inn or at the Town Hall.

Century, I'm guessing your okay with staying the night and whatnot?

Also, sorry for being a bit slow with posting. I'm been sick since yesterday, and I haven't really felt up to posting much. I'm feeling a tad bit better today, though, so I intend to rectify that.

EDIT:

Just posted. I'm feeling a lot better now, thankfully. I hope you don't mind that Whistler did that thing with the locks- he's a Rogue and a former criminal, and has high intelligence and even higher perception, so it seemed fitting. Not to mention that if the flying thing has been coming through the windows, there probably wouldn't be any evidence of tampering with the locks.
