If you know who the characters are and at least know the basic synopsis of Sonic Forces, then you're good.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.It follows Sonic Forces?
Eeyup.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.noises of general discomfort
Its not that bad once you get over it. I mean, its not amazing or anything and the first couple of issues are pretty formulaic, but they're entertaining enough. The first story arc doesn't really get started until the 5th issue though.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does. It's post-Sonic Forces. If you know the general plot of Forces then you'll know where this one is picking up from.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!You don't even need to know the plot of Sonic forces. As the only details really covered are that Eggman lost and has gone missing. Which could follow off nearly any game.
Well no, it actually does explain why Metal Sonic was a Phantom and not the real deal
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Yeah but you don't really need to know that in the comics.
You technically don't need to read the Archie comics or play the Sonic games at all to start this comic - I still advise that you do.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Well, the games anyway. But unless the Freedom Fighters show up or the pre-SGW canon gets reinstated, I wouldn't worry about reading Archie. Not unless you want to read some of the best Sonic comics ever you're curious. Mostly because it's basically it's own thing.
Question for Comixology readers here: Does this series go on sale with other IDW books? I know their licensed books can be kinda finicky about that and the first trade's worth of issues have already been discounted.
The first collection was half off on CMX so I impulse bought it. Whoops.
Hope I like it.
Issue 7 got a visual upgrade holy crap...
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Issue 8 is out and about. Here's the SparkNotes version (spoiler-tagged in the name of consideration):
- Silver came back from the future after leaving to go to it because while the Eggman Empire wasn't ruling the future, there was literally nothing but cybernetic plant life.
- Whisper the Wolf has a super Wispon that uses more than just the one Wisp, so it's like a Swiss Army Wispon.
- She's also really shy. So shy, she seems to only manage whispering (get it?) one word at a time. (She only speaks 3 separate words in the span of the issue.) It's like she's the current Cassandra Cain minus the background in martial arts and adding the shyness of Elisa Esposito from The Shape of Water. Even Sonic wonders if Eggman did something bad to her.
- Silver actually says "Holy crap!" when finding out what's Neo Metal Sonic's scheme.
- Similarly, Knuckles has a Significant Sense Tingling thing telling him something's up with the Master Emerald.
- Sure enough, Neo Metal Sonic is charging himself with the power of the Master Emerald (Has Metal Sonic done that before? Charging himself with the Master Emerald?) on Angel Island. And he's looking forward to Sonic coming at him as either Sonic or Super Sonic.
All in all, a nice prelude to what I'm guessing is the series' next arc: "The Battle for Angel Island" (or something like that).
EDIT: Random semi-serious idea, what if characters like Tangle and Whisper are building up to a new take on the Freedom Fighters?

To be exact Metal intends to use the Master Emeralds power to nullify the power of the Chaos Emeralds to defeat Sonic if he decided to become Super Sonic. As he seems fairly confident that he won't lose to Sonic if he does not have them. (Plus the Master Emerald can be used to further empower himself.)
So I started reading.
The most shocking thing is that Amy isn't really annoying and terrible. Actually she was probably my favourite character out of the four issues I read.
So whoever called the first four issues "set up" wasn't kidding, this is definitely all about making clear that this comic follows the games and establishing the universe, but I still had my fun with it. Tangle was pretty alright. I liked Rough & Tumble too and I hope they come back since it's fun to have villains other than Robotnik.
I guess I'm now totally on board for Ian Flynn's second go-around at Sonic the Hedgehog fanfiction.

I like Tangle but I wonder if maybe Marine should have been in her place. But maybe she'll show up later.
I'm kind of Tangle > Whisper at the moment.
I think I just hate the Wisps and by extension Whisper.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Really, I'm definitely more of Whisper > Tangle guy.
She's OK, but there isn't much to her, other than fancrush on Blaze and cool power. Whisper feels more unique.
With that said, Whisper > Tangle >>>>>>>>> Rough and Tumble.
Got some bad news for Cream fans. Last month on BumbleKast someone asked Ian Flynn on whether Cream could have a more active role in the IDW comics as opposed to her minor role in the Archie series. And Ian's response was that he'd like to do so if Cream gets into the comics, which makes it seem like despite being on the cover of the upcoming Issue 9 it looks like Sega aren't actually letting her appear in the comics.
Oh dear! I wonder why she wouldn't make it in.
Also here's ish 11's RI cover. https://twitter.com/SonicWindBlue/status/1034393812146241537

The Protomen enhanced my life.According to Bumblekast 76 all post-reboot Archie characters are off-limits too. (44:18 to 49:00)
Ian only learned about this recently. He said back in April that he might possibly get to continue the post-reboot universe some day, and that he'd only put them in the Lost Hedgehog Tales if he learned otherwise. In his new Sonic FAQ, he says that the post-reboot plans will be in LHT.
The Protomen enhanced my life. And nothing of value was lost.
How's this comic for a casual at best, used to be hardcore, Sonic fan?
