Her sense of self-preservation isn't that terrible. The worst she's gotten is accidental food poisoning.
I can only think of one instance where Blaze Reap was used in the manga (might've been the only instance where it was used). Seeing it in action today was really nice. Seeing it behave like an explosive Pile Driver was even nicer.

She already kind of did, but the pancake-mice licked it off of her.
Food related matters seem to mess up her thought processes. They probably should have eaten one of them critters before heading into the shipwreck. Zombie hunger is mighty.
It's been kind of clear since the first scenes of the first episode that "my own safety" exists somewhere on her list if priorities, but it might not even be in her top 10 concerns. Hell, "that other person's safety" is probably somewhere higher on that list.

but maybe somewhereI was a bit bored so I made this
probably would have avoided most of their problems this episode

The wish of any delver on a long abyss trip. Just make sure the staff are all black-white whistles so they can repel the creatures coming for the smells.
Which reminds me, I remember in the 4th episode that they'd actually made some sort of smoked meat.
Eh, probably got used up. And chances are, the first layer was the only place they could get away with making that. Aaand again, the smell might attract the beasts.
but maybe somewhereThere is no safe layer except for the surface. I can guarantee that based on what we've seen of the Abyss, if they didn't fall into that sedentary predator, then some other mobile one would have tried to get them if they decided to just wait. That was not a safer option. The one taken wasn't safe either, but it might actually have been better in the long run. Not that that's what drove Riko to move anyways.
As for what would necessitate the rodents to go out of the walls, it may be just to get some food source that isn't those fruits that apparently made them taste good. Or, again, predators that can go into the narrower tunnels.
but maybe somewhereEhh. Probably not much all that scary that could effectively move in a tunnel that narrow. Certainly nothing that small was gonna try to get past the Dragon-snake guy, so one end of the tunnel was safe. It would take some pretty damn bad luck for something to have stumbled across them.
I mean, at very least, it's absurd to think that moving into a less secluded location would've meant less danger.
Putting way too much trust in the Abyss to let them stay safe. There is no "avoiding" getting into trouble for any raider. All there is is escaping the jaws of one monster by entering the maw of another. And then escaping that and so on and so forth. Absurd is overestimating one's safety anywhere down there by thinking that anything we'd consider "common" anything will help. This place is that insidious, and that's as spoiler free as I can make that warning.
Another complaint I notice going around is that a child was supposed to somehow make good decisions while distracted by hunger and while carrying two masses around her own weight. I don't use the "they're kids so they act like that" reason, but I wouldn't expect adults to have handled that situation well. Actual soldiers and black whistles, maybe, but not anyone below that.

but maybe somewhereI don't think you'll be able to convince me that there's no meaningful difference between 'let's take full advantage of this particular moment of relative safety' and 'since we escaped one monster, let's blindly charge directly into the stomach of a different one'.
Like, even if we assume the Abyss is intelligent and actively trying to murder them, helping it to achieve that goal is still a pretty big mistake.

In other cases, there would be differences. But this is the Abyss, so there actually probably isn't. Probably. And besides that, that... was not a relative moment of safety. That is a sense of security that is false and has no place past the first layer. Maybe not even then.
Barring some really —and I mean really— out there circumstances, every delver and every action taken does that the moment they enter the Abyss. It's not a matter of "if", but "when and how" and "are we ready".
...nnnot that Riko considered any of this, because she really didn't, but still.
But I'll drop the matter for now. Gotta get ready to discuss the upcoming episode. Because I think it will be phenomenal.
but maybe somewhere…You know, for kids.
T'was a hard episode to watch… I was almost physically in pain during the whole scene… Especially knowing that Reg broke Riko's arm for naught. Though fainting from the pain was probably the best thing that could happen to her right now… Oh hey, the rabbit appears at last. About time. Love hissseeer voice?
Gotta love the light and cute ending just after that.
I think that fact that it was voice acted made it worse then the Manga, imo.

Watch SymphogearSooo, remember when Ozen said there were thing down in the Abyss that even she wouldn't want to fuck with? The lady was 100% serious.
I wonder how many anime watchers picked up on the implications of the ED when the porkupine thing appear and suddenly Reg and Riko are falling down. That was there all along, instead of other stuff that was added along the way.
Also, this is main reason why manga readers try to warn people why this series get dark. It doesn't get much more stomach churning than a little girl vomiting blood and begging a friend to lop off her arm to stop the pain. Yet we are in for the long haul.
Wait, did they add another voice to the ED song?
That was fucking gruesome, I'm so happy they didn't hide how brutal this show gets. Watched it earlier and after I finished watching it I had a massive headache. No censorship and the snap was brilliant, honestly I'm happy the pacing is slow as if this was a very quick scene it wouldn't be as shocking (Maybe that's because of the hype for that 60 minute episode though).
Seriously I reckon this episode would fit inside something like a Stephen King horror.
It'll be explained later, so hold onto that thought.
Excellent voice acting, which is always integral to a great adaption. Speaking of which, the bunny sounds exactly like I expected her to sound like.
That new title card at the end of the opening is important. Very, very important. Like, "people won't shut up about this for ages" important.
"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)I've seen gore before. Madoka had shock value to surprise viewers, but it was never uncomfortable to watch. Stuff like Evangelion didn't make me blink. But this was half an episode of a kid just dying horribly, with the animation and voice acting not holding any punches like is usual for these sorts of scenes.
Really doesn't help that Riko has the exact same voice as the protagonist in Aikatsu Stars!. It's a bit unnerving to hear the happy go lucky idol act all normal when a couple days before she was screaming in pain like that.

It's the price for being a blitz to the bottom instead of a cave raider's career, but ah well. I'm looking forward to what the Goblet of Giants will have in store for us.
