If any former console maker should return to the market, it's Sega. The original Atari died ages ago.
Reminds me of this Jimquisition bit on Atari
Atari's creative juices ran dry a while ago.
Disgusted, but not surprisedNo, they shouldn't. Sega does not do well with consoles.
Ukrainian Red CrossI still remember the days of the Genesis and Sega's desperate floundering attempts to keep it on life support (as AVGN put it) with things like the 32X and the Sega CD.
Disgusted, but not surprisedthe only way SEGA should return to the Console Market is if its like the Atari VCS. It is also the only way Nintendo should remain in the console market.
Nintendo has found large amounts of success, particularly with the Switch, without imitating not-Atari's business model. I see no reason why that should change.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."The Dreamcast was nearly twenty years ago. There's no real reason to assume they'd still mismanage a new console.
It wasn't just the Dreamcast. Sega had a history of mismanaging hardware development. There's a reason I mentioned the 32X and Sega CD. And let's be honest, the Saturn wasn't such hot shit either.
Disgusted, but not surprisedMy point is that Sega hasn't done anything with hardware for twenty years. Basically none of their old anti-feats (to borrow a term from /r/WhoWouldWin) are relevant anymore.

Besides, Sega has had a major shift in management recently. There's no reason to believe that they'll automatically make the same mistakes they did in the 90's.
Thing is, the current Sega even messed up Sega Genesis Classics.
And you think these chucklefucks would be able to create a brand new console?
i guess there are still enough people nostalgic about Sega consoles that they'd be willing to crowdfund a new console, but...

Disgusted, but not surprisedLet's consider sales.
8-bit era
- Master System: 13 million, though apparently there's been a revival in Brazil with new units being made.
- NES: 61.9 million
- Atari 7800: 5 million
16-bit era
- Mega Drive: 35.25 million, including licensed 3rd-party units
- SNES: 49.1 million
- TurboGrafx: 5.8 million
- Neo Geo: 980,000
- CD-i: 200,000
32 and 64 bit era
- Saturn: 9.3 million
- Nintendo 64: 32.9 million
- PS1: 102.5 million
- Jaguar: < 250,000
- 3DO: 2 million
128-bit era
- Dreamcast: 9.1 million
- GameCube: 21.7 million
- PS2: 155 million
- XBox 0: 24 million
Handhelds
- Game Gear: 10.6 million
- Game Boy: 118.7 million (includes mono and colour)
- Atari Lynx: 3 million
- TurboExpress: 1.5 million
Sega's biggest success was the Mega Drive, and even it just barely sold better than the N64, which was considered a disappointment (though that's really because Sony skewed the curve). Sure, Sega might have success if they re-entered the console market, but history is not on their side. Also they'd need a damn good console to persuade people to buy Sega instead of one of the current Big Three.

Ukrainian Red CrossSega would also need some amazing console exclusives for their hypothetical new system.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWould they even be willing to make Sonic a single console game? Remember, Mario and Sonic are the best selling Sonic games of all time.
Where there's life, there's hope.Sega currently has a good thing going with their new "friendship" with Nintendo. They aren't going to risk it by dipping their toes into a pool they already nearly drowned in years ago.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI can't understand why anyone would shell out for "old skool" stuff like this when you can emulate it free.
And before anyone goes "It's not the same playing it on a monitor!", it's literally child's play to output though a TV.
Your momma's so dumb she thinks oral sex means talking dirty.Or you can hack a Wii.
Ukrainian Red CrossOne might argue that's more due to the (lack of) quality in Sonic games not made by fans.
And really, speaking of Sega exclusive, so many of Sega's Subsidiaries would be useless to making console games. Like, do you expect Creative Assembly to whip out a Total War game to play on console? Can you even imagine how that'd turn out?

Some people aren't okay with piracy. Plus, loads of people don't even know what emulation is.
Has Sonic Mania even reached Sonic 1's numbers?
Where there's life, there's hope.Probably not. It's got a steep hill to climb.
So who wants to bet that this Atari VCS will not even be able to play classic Atari games like Tempest or Asteroids or Pong correctly at launch? Assuming it ever does launch?
Disgusted, but not surprisedMeh, I'd assume it can (if it comes out). I mean, even if you're running a scam, you could get those to play. A calculator can get those to play. If you're going to release a box that can't play pong, you might as well just run away with the money and not release anything.
My doubts are far more on if it'll ever come out, the quality of the thing, and its ability to run modern stuff (if it has any).
Clearly several people will be surprised as this somehow got 11079 backers and just under 3 million bucks.
