I kind of feel bad for Mephisto. OMD is basically his Never Live It Down moment.

OMD could have worked if it was Mary Jane who got shot.

I get the feeling if they'd had MJ be shot, they'd use it as an excuse to kill her off. They already tried it once in the 90s.

Which would still be better than Spidey selling his marriage to the Devil.

More easily resolved, too. If MJ got shot and died, we all know she'd be back on her feet by the end of the fiscal year. It's comics!

It took Bucky and Jason years to return.

Mar-Vell's been back a bunch of times. They just never stick. He has a lot of Legacy Characters but whenever his current Legacy is out of commission, he likes to pop in for a miniseries or something. Just to make sure there's a comic out there with his name on it, so that DC can't obtain the trademark.

You know that old saying, "You can have it when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers?" Mar-Vell's been dead for decades and still has that iron grip so far as his trademark is concerned.

Though he might start winding down on his pop-in visits to the world of the living now that DC's finally given up the decades-long fight and renamed their character.
