[up][up] I've actually done the quiz thing and I thought the show was boring. They didn't dress it up at all and there's no real interest in the questions, they're just kind of there.

And I watched Aho-girl. It had some funny moments. Her own mom saying "She's great on the outside", but mostly it was kind of annoying. At least it mostly avoided the straight man explaining in excruciating detail why Yoshiko is wrong, like some anime comedies I could mention. I liked the opening song too (just the actual song, the visuals are dead boring) and the way the really distinct vocals of Angela's lead singer fade in and out through it.

Kombini Kareshi has a very slow beginning, but I can foresee that it will become much better later on. I'd say it is a total reverse of 12-sai, but equally good. The only complaint is the male facial design is a bit questionable.

Made in Abyss: The best looking and best sounding show so far, bar none. The anime did a great job instilling that slight dread that's ever-present in the manga. Riko and Reg is adorable and they faithfully adapted the small interactions present in the manga. The first episode set a high bar for the rest of the show, and if it is met until the end this will easily be the best show of its season. It cut a number of scenes from the first chapters but I believe they're just deferring those to the second episode. Should they adapt the series at this pace (3 chapter per episode), it'll end at a perfect spot and I certainly hope that will be the case.

Vatican Miracle Examiner: Oddly, the first episode seemed both rushed and slow at the same time. The series does seem somewhat quite interesting though and there is enough mystery here to keep me watching.

Action Heroine Cheer Fruits: Decent, I guess. Not on the level of Love Live, but better than the other imitators. May try ep 2

18if: Enjoyably trippy set design, but it has neither the budget nor the writing to back this up

Made in Abyss: This one is good! Interesting concepts, top-tier animation, solid direction. Pity about the kids' designs, though

Vatican Miracle Examiner: Terrible writing. The direction is overbearing to the point that it's somewhere between obnoxious and funny, which might be a reason to watch it, though (but not for me)

Altair: Not bad, I guess. Visually strong, but the writing is very typical. Might give another episode

Made in Abyss is absolutely amazeballs. The setting, backgrounds, music, and animation are on-point like nothing I've seen before. The only thing more impressive is the child endangerment and abuse, but hey, that's what makes it fun.

Isekai Shokudou is another anime definitely worth a watch. Food porn and fantasy, an unusual combination. The restaurant owner is an interesting guy.

Action Heroine Cheer Fruits doesn't come off as strong as the previous two, but it seems like nice, wholesome anime fun. Cute girls doing cute things are as necessary as air, and this anime provides.

Aho Girl The 12 minute format really works for this, and it's super hilarious, which is great since I didn't find the manga nearly as amusing. It's a really enjoyable romp.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

Hm, still not sure if I'll stick with Aho Girl. I can see this premise running itself out pretty quickly - though at least they do get some shots in on A-kun as well.

That said, somehow Sugita doesn't sound at his best here.

It's been fun.

First episode impressions

  • DIVE!!: Hard to say if it's worth taking the plunge. Diving as a sport has niche appeal, the writing is nothing special (it's filled with boring monologue), and it doesn't help that the viewpoint character is considerably unlikable. It's also disappointing that the animation takes a dip during the actual diving sequences, so that makes the sports diving an even harder sell. That said, it wasn't outright terrible, so I'm good for another lap or two.
  • Vatican Kiseki Chousakan: Has a habit of awkwardly inserting exposition into conversations, the directing jumps from scene to scene too quickly at a few points, plus the sound design is somewhat weak, especially in several sequences where it would have been a lot better to cut the BGM. It also gets a bit overzealous in selling the mood of some scenes, so it comes off as pretentious. Though you could probably figure it was going to be cheesy from the premise alone. Heck, there's great lines like "I sense a strong aura of blasphemy from this place". It's terrible, but the amusing kind of terrible. But the studio should get some brownie points for doing their research on Christian mythology.
  • Welcome to the Ballroom: If you've seen sports anime before, well, it's dancing to the same old tune, but this still has fantastic beats. Solid visuals, solid music, solid story, solid characters. Definitely worth a swing.
  • Konbini Kareshi: A package deal for high school love stories, sort of like a more "serious" Tsurezure Children. It's decent, I suppose? A figurative, inoffensive 5/10 budget romance.

Turns out I somehow missed Made in Abyss is out. Super excited for that!

First episode impressions

  • Shoukoku no Altair: It's not technically about Turkey, but they got the culture down pat. Well, as far as my limited knowledge of the Ottoman Empire goes. The first episode was rushed, with a bit too many infodumps, but otherwise okay. It doesn't really have a hook yet, to be frank. But it's always nice to see anime like this. And attacking using falcons? That's cool.
  • Made in Abyss: Now here's an abyss worth staring into— a downright luscious fantasy world straight out of a dungeon crawler that must have drained the life out of teams of artists. Seriously, it looks so good and moves as smooth as butter. And the rest of the package is just as good as the visuals; in particular they did a really good job with naturally integrating worldbuilding, from classic explain-stuff-to-amnesiac-newbie to just plain showing things. There were a few instances where I would have slightly tweaked the dialogue to make it flow more naturally, but overall the writing is excellent. The characters also burst with charm, and I also really love it the hints of something darker in this Ghibli-esque setting. There's no way that orphanage isn't shady. Easily the best in this cour from what I've watched.

Princess Principle: This was an awesome first episode. I loved the Steampunk setting, the characters are all quite cool and the opening is probably the best I have seen so far this season

The plot of the episode was quite interesting and I look forward to see how the series develops.

Jikan no Shihaisha it was actually pretty good, though some names and events (graduation in March) feel odd in the setting - which looks like a Western city to me.

Also, this anime game me strong Kekkai Sensen vibes for some reason...

Ah yes, sorry Principal.

Also, I'm going to make a thread for this if there isn't one already, because this was probably the strongest first episode of the season.

Centaur: Aside from the animation, this turned out pretty well. As is, the animation is only bad enough to be a bit of an annoyance, but first episodes usually look the best...

Princess Principal: Solid! Certainly has potential to crash and burn, but I'd say this is the second strongest premiere of the season

Haoliners, the studio that does most of the Chinese coproductions, tend to look really consistent. Their shows tend to look like they've been dredged up from the early 2000s, just in widescreen.

I don't think they're a bad studio exactly, but they don't tend to be handed very good source material.

I'm surprised to see so much love for PP. To me, it felt like a disjointed mess which was unable to marry its half-billion wildly disparate elements into any sort of unified whole, and so spent most of its first episode working against itself. You had wild anti-gravity car-chases rendered dark and bland by the show's gritty colour palette, and dramatic betrayals rendered ridiculous by one party being a man with a relatively realistic Serious Adult Anime character design and the other party being a K-On character cosplaying Jack the Ripper.

Pick a tone and aesthetic and stick with it, guys.

What's precedent ever done for us?

[up]I like its mixed tone personally.

In a Different World with a Smartphone: The first episode of this series seemed somewhat half-arsed yet strangely compelling. There seems to be no urgency to it at all but I suppose this could be due to the series trying to get the world building out of the way. None of the characters so far are jerks however and God seems to be rather chill and amusing.

Made in Abyss is amazing. It reminds me of a Team ICO game, only its an anime instead.

The robotic boy, Reg, having a similar helmet to the titular boy of ICO only made that more obvious to me.
