This thread is about Disney live action films of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Anything before The Black Hole basically.

Has anyone watched the more obscure ones like The Moon Pilot?

Escape to Witch Mountain is one of the first films I can remember watching. Better than the sequel.

Here is a list of well known live action films produced by Walt Disney himself:

  • Treasure Island (1950)
  • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
  • Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier (1955)
  • Old Yeller (1957)
  • The Shaggy Dog (1959)
  • Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959)
  • Pollyana (1960)
  • Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
  • The Absent-Minded Professor (1961) and Son of Flubber (1963)
  • The Parent Trap (1961)
  • Babes in Toyland (1961)
  • The Incredible Journey (1963)
  • Mary Poppins (1964)
  • That Darn Cat! (1965)

Some people think those are the only live action films that Walt made. That is not the case at all! Some of these films have been forgotten while others are still loved by die hard Disney fans.

This is partially why I made this thread. I wanted to see if those more obscure Disney films are worth checking out.

On an unrelated note, Richard and Robert Sherman were probably the last pop song writers (Walt discovered them when they wrote the top ten hit "Tall Paul" for Annette Funicello) to make the transition to musicals like Mary Poppins without it feeling like a stunt or novelty.

Do the TV movies made for the anthology show count?

True-Life Adventures and all the other Disney nature documentaries were generally hailed as the best of that era.
