Miitopia

I know that it's already out in Japan, but the last Nintendo Direct revealed that Miitopia, the Tomodachi Life-like RPG that stars your Miis, will come to the West this year.

What are your thoughts?

This game looks like it'll be hilarious if you have a big enough roster of silly Miis. Shame that they can't have exotic hair colors like in Tomodachi Life as far as I can tell.

Vinesauce tried out the demo, and made Sponge a cleric. It's quite beautiful.

If you make them from scratch they can have exotic hair AND eye colors, like purple, light pink, or gold.

They really should just update the 3 DS and Wii U Mii Maker apps to have those colors.

You can change their lip colors too!

Oh, good. I'll have to remake some of them from scratch, I suppose, but that's better than nothing.

Stu Pickles needs his purple hair before he can be my chocolate pudding chef, after all.

Edit: Tried the demo, you don't need to make your Miis from scratch to give them exotic hair/eye/glasses/lip colors; before the game finalizes your selection you have an option to edit them.

Also, I love how the game pulls other people's Miis randomly if you have Spotpass enabled. The very first NPC I met, the gatekeeper at Greenhorne, is Nigel Thornberry. And Stan Lee is the "Sarcastic Guy". He really is the king of cameos.

The lovey-dovey couple in Greenhorne got cast as McCree and Celica. Which is kinda concerning since the latter is only 17.

When I get the game for real, I'm not sure whether I should transfer the demo or start fresh, just to see what oddities I encounter next time. Is there a way to start the game over without losing progress toward medals and such?

My starting town had Welcoming Guide Weegee, Cheery Granny Starlight Glimmer, Sassy Child No-Face, Worried Mother Jenny (not sure who this was; she had bright green hair and lips), Lovey-Dovey couple Cloud and Chibi-Usa, Sarcastic Guy Sonic, and Dubious Mayor Flowey.

No-Face got his face stolen first, making for a hilarious scene when my character yelled at Bubsy to "Give No-Face's face back!"

Let's see, looking at my mii collection, I have Adam and Jamie, Guts, Casca, and the Godhand, some characters from the Layton games, the entire 999 crew, and some other misc. people. I can see some humor out of this.

I cast Guy Fieri as the Dark Lord, so it's been pretty surreal. And since Nigel Thornberry was the gatekeeper, I had a boss battle against a giant butterfly with Nigel's face, which was even more surreal.

I'm having second thoughts on restarting once the full game is out. It'd be kind of a shame to give that up.

Currently I'm a Thief, and my partner Stu Pickles is a Chef.

If you pick a mii you have, then go to create from scratch, you can customize the mii you chose. use this to add died hair to existing miis.

Yep, figured that out.

Besides myself and Stu, I've now been joined in my quest by CD-i Impa as a Mage, and Sundowner as a Knight.

I'm glad there's no swear filter in this game, because now I can make Sundowner yell "I'M FUCKING INVINCIBLE!!" as a war cry.

Also, I had to fight Stan Lee as a boulder. I love how the bosses in this game use other people's Miis as faces.

Alright, so I got the demo and the first town consists of a puppy, an Inkling shopkeeper, A2 with Ganondorf as her child, Spongebob and Madoka as a couple, Jack Black as the resident sarcastic guy, and Stan Lee as the dubious Mayor.

Stan Lee just keeps appearing, huh?

Spongebob is in my game too, but as the overzealous guard who bars you from entering the second town.

Alright, more fun;

I made Jamie the Dark Lord, Ecolo a thief, Emmy a knight, Layton a cleric, and Miyamoto the great sage. The guard that blocks the castle is No Face. Also, Bulma is a huge nintendo fan. Who knew.

I love how the game takes the cliche of the power of friendship from other RP Gs and turns it into a worthwhile mechanic.

I've only just started the demo and found Marceline as Reggie Fils-Amie's mother and Muriel married to Skeletor. This is going to be great...!

Skeletor does kinda look and sound like Eustace.

I've already reached the end of the demo. My team at the end was my starting Mii (who was simply the main character of my own stories), Warrior Steve Harvey (his battle cry is "Survey said-!"), Mage Steve Urkel (who was, ironically, probably the most badass character on my team), and Cleric Lucy (the stubborn trait couldn't be more fitting). I also encountered an unusually chipper Nintendo Fan Mandy, Uncle Grandpa as the soldier guarding the castle, and I can see that the king is Captain Falcon. I made the Dark Lord a Gonky version of my own Mii.

And at one point, my party was rescued by the Great Sage Weird Al Yankovic.

I have to say, I really quite enjoyed this. I think the combat works and the situations you can come across with yours or other Miis is pretty entertaining. I may just have to pick this up.

I cast Guy Fieri as the Dark Lord, and to serve as his counterpoint cast Paula Deen as the Great Sage.

Steve Harvey is a pretty amazing choice of hero, though. I may very well have to co-opt that choice when the full game comes out. Good choice on the battle cry, too.

My battle cry is "Spaalonebabuguuscooties!", Stu Pickles' is "AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!"

Oh yea, the battle cries. For my Miiself, it's "Oh fuck!" Ecolo says "Just an imitation!" which is just fitting. Emmy says some puzzle quote and Layton says "Let's be gentlemanly."

Also, caution on having a character with the laid back personality. At some point they will learn the Nah ability. What is Nah? They skip a turn. Fuck you Layton.

Huh, if you go into the records section of the menu on the map screen, go to the journal, select Mii Cast, and highlight Castle Guard, you can see that there are four Miis assigned as guards besides the one that stops you at the castle gate at the end of the demo.

For me, besides Uncle Grandpa, the three other guards are Harry Potter, Porky Minch, and Neo Cortex.

Greenhorne sure has some odd standards when it comes to hiring their guards if they'll hire a megalomaniac kid and a mad scientist.

I can't remember who one of them is, but the other three are Spongebob, Meta Knight, and John Cena.

My guards are No-Face, Link, DIO, and Brock.

I guess they make sense, at least the latter three. Link's basically a knight, Brock has his pokemons, and DIO is yes.

Among the first town, Miyamoto was fittingly the Mayor. But Major Armstrong as the Sassy Child? Uhhhh...

...Well I guess even the ability to play make-believe has been ✦✦passed down through the Armstrong family for generations.✦✦

Long story short, it's now my quest to take down the Dark Lord Pringles. I might actually get the full game.
