The game didn't really actually show any of the Valtz city off, so that kind of stuff was nice. And Io looks so much better in the anime then her original game art, it's almost kind of jarring.

Still don't like the narrative changes they're doing with Siero, it makes more sense for Christophe to seek them out on his own.

I'm pretty sure that the gunsmith couple they talked to were the parents of Silva, Camieux and Cucouroux, too bad we didn't get to see them.

Battle 2 remix at the end was p good.

ORCHISSSSSSS, also like how they show the Black Knight's eyes to make her more human

imo the Valtz arc is probably the most boring out of the first six islands, and this episode at least is getting to the core bits of the arc fast so we can move onto Auguste

I know it might be a bit silly to ask, but how does an volcano on a flying island work?

Is Sierokarte going to inexplicably be everywhere the heroes go?

The city looks super cool.

Io is cute.

Did Black Knight dress his "doll" like this. What a suspicious taste.

So the Archduke was evil all along.

[up] The magma comes from ancient Astral tech that utilize air currents as tectonic plates. (Huh, do we have a trope for explanations that aren't actually explanations? Like A Wizard Did It but in the guise of aero-tectonics or magizoology or whatever)

So it's either Siero stowed away on their ship or she has that magical RPG merchant ability to be everywhere the players need her to be. Either theory is hilarious.

Valtz looks like a proper metalwork-oriented fantasy city. I'm getting an itch to play a JRPG again. Every freaking time I watch this show.

Yey, a mage! Mages are always a nice addition to a party.

From the game's journal and Flavor Text

A Draph country whose scorching heat slumbers beneath the land. Due to the intense temperatures below ground, a river of lava flows there without ever hardening.
Lake Zairic: An everlasting lake of lava. Below it slumbers a scorching heat that melts stone.
It was awfully nice of the creator god to make convection only apply to non-living things.

4x[up] It definitely wouldn't make more sense for Christopher seek them on his own. We are talking about very sensitive mission. Giving it random crew of misfits without anyone trustworthy recommendation would be plainly stupid.

[up][up][up]Ah, so a wizard did it. I can go with that.

Also, is there any particular reason everyone lives on flying islands, besides the fact that flying islands make for a cool setting? Like, is the surface uninhabitable or something?

The world is solely made up of islands in the sky, no one has any clue if there's anything actually down there or if there even is a surface.

Can't they like... fly down and check? Or even just look down? I imagine a whole surface of the world would be pretty hard to miss if it was there.

I vaguely remember it indeed isn't possible. Airships aren't built fly that low they would fall apart. Crew had pretty hard time find certain secret cave underneath of certain island in game.

Not sure if anything was said about visibility, but there is probably lot of clouds.

It's pretty well known that going too far down is fatal.

We do know some of what's down there, or at least the implications. It's called the Crimson Horizon, if I remember right, and is covered with monsters.

It's been fun.

Episode 7 thoughts:

No Colossus Omega remix, worst episode yet 0/10

Colossus was smaller then I thought it'd be. Think they tweaked Colossus's design from game to anime a little bit, it at the very least it didn't have the yellow eyes. Also looks like Lyria's going to serve as the primary buffer so she can contribute something for every fight.

I haven't gotten to a point in the game where Io discusses her backstory, so seeing that was nice.

I didn't really get how big male Draphs were until Tzaka patted Io, he was basically patting the entire head.

"A giant puddle" is the most perfect description for Auguste.

tbh, the Grand Blues comic kinda ruined my image of Tzaka because I've been expecting him to cast punch throughout the entire episode.

I guess Sierokarte is just straight up going with them on the ship.

Man, there's so many characters and summons in the game that it's going to take the anime a long while. Hopefully it keeps going.

And yeah male Draphs are freakin' huge.

Lyria is the best support character. Those buffs were insane. 0_0

This was such a video game boss fight, I'm surprised that Collosus didn't have a second form. [lol]

So duke was manipulated by some kind of magic? Suspected so.

So wait, is the ocean also flying? Because that sounds amazing.

Yeah, male Dorafs are gigantic. Their average height is over 2m (whereas I think female Dorafs average around 130cm?). Io's backstory is, as far as I know, not discussed in the game, so it was nice to see some more info given.

The storyline is likely only going to cover the main story quests/characters - at this rate we'll probably get through Auguste to Lumacie before episode 12. After Lumacie, the main party is pretty well settled in, and things start picking up for the more complicated storylines.

Yeah, Auguste is basically the ever-flowing magma problem but with saltwater instead of lava. It's a really nice place though - great OST, and a lot of the summer characters' events are set there because it's the only place you can set a beach episode.

It's been fun.

Oh huh I'd thought they have covered Io's backstory already especially since the rest of the cast has had some of their backstory revealed.

I should start rereading some of the early main story chapters as the anime goes, I've forgotten some of the plot stuff for the earlier arcs and I didn't notice they changed Tzaka's motive from avenging the Draph slaves abused by the Astrals to protecting Valtz until someone else pointed that out.

They may not have wanted to bring the abuses of the Astrals into the storyline at this point in the anime, given that we're pretty late in the season already and only getting to Auguste.

It's been fun.

Mary and Karva are going to show up in the next episode.

So I guess they're going to have a few filler episodes to show off some of the characters not from the main story. Mary and Karva actually haven't interacted in the game yet despite both being treasure hunters so that'll be nice to see. Really hope this doesn't mess with the pacing.

Episode 8 is here:

It's time for a sidequest I guess. This adaptation really has everything.

Mary and Karva are a hilarious duo, I like them.

Io is such a lady.

Great job Gram, you destroyed all the treasure.

Or, the adventure was the real treasure all along!

.....

Naaaah, it was the sword. That IS one pimping sword after all!

Episode 8:

  • Bit miffed that Mary doesn't have her SR outfit which I liked better but I guess that's because her SR version's post Inner Light.
  • And so Siero's economic empire grew bigger.
  • When they said Lyria had a close connection to Gran and their bond let them find each other, I did not expect her ahoge to work as the compass.
  • Katalina's Light Wall coming in handy I see
  • Foreshadowing~~
  • Yeah Io's not good with light magic, just look at her limited SSR version! (ba-dum-tsh)
  • welp I hope that sword was worth it.
  • Less Katalina/Rackam/Io interactions with Mary/Karva then I hoped for, but overall this episode was pretty good, lots of fun comedic beats and Io got to show off some of her stuff.

Of course, any self-respecting JRPG will have some ancient ruins ripe for exploring (and looting).

It doesn't seem like Mary and Karva will be joining the crew, which is a shame. How are those two in the game? Optional party members I guess?

I'm getting fonder of Siero by the episode. Her casual manipulation— err, utilization of extraordinary talent is pretty neat.

Lyria gains a new skill: ahoge radar! Useful for finding boys with no sense of direction.

Speaking of which, how wicked was it that Gran dunked a bomb into a golem's mouth! Dang. And all he got for it was a sword. Admittedly, a spiffy, shiny sword.

Mary and Karva are characters you get from the gacha.

Karva first joins as a hitchhiker on the Grandcypher after she got abandoned by her clients and then decides that looting treasure from the island of the Astrals sounds like a cool idea so she stays on the ship to journey with them.

Don't have Mary's R version but presumably the motivation for joining is similar.

Mary and Karva were a couple of fun gals. Hope to see them at another ruin.

That golem fight was dope. Gran finishing it off with a slam dunk was awesome.

Nice Gran Detector ya got there, Lyria. It led her all the way to him in very cute style.

@fillerdude: There's an official gag comic called Grand Blues, and one of them involves Siero convincing Saraasa, one of the ten strongest warriors in the entire Sky, to help rescue some villagers by telling her that if the village is destroyed they can't sell Saraasa her favorite cake anymore.

The final panel gives the moral 'fear not the ones who hold overwhelming power, but the one who knows how to control them'.
