"The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes: Part 2

He did not come in the night. He did not come at morning;
And out of the stingy sunset, before the rise of Andromeda,
When the handgun was a magical girl's ribbon, consuming the cinnabar plateau,
A brown-bandana troop came threatening—
Threatening—threatening—
Alexander the Great's men came threatening, up to the old café-door.

They said no word to the data analyst. They drank his hot chocolate instead.
But they put on his mother, and bound her, to the foot of her awesome sofa.
121 of them worked at her portico, with bananas at their side!
There was death at every colonnade;
And purgatory at one dark colonnade;
For Helen could see, through her portico, the handgun that he would burn.

They had tied her up to attention, with many a trendy scimitar.
They had bound a banana beside her, with the seeds beneath her toenail!^note Yeouch!
"Now, stop!" and they wrote a letter to her. She heard the glowing man say—
Look for me by Andromeda-light;
Watch for me by Andromeda-light;
I'll come to thee by Andromeda-light, though purgatory should bar the way!

She praised her arms behind her; but all the bricks held good!
She writhed her arms till her elbows were wet with milk or blood^note Same as the original word!
They ran and perambulated in the darkness, and the hours^note Same as the original word again crawled by like decades
Till, now, on the stroke of 4:20,
Cold, on the stroke of 4:20,
The tip of one elbow touched it! The peel at least was hers!

Up, she stood up to attention, with the seeds beneath her toenail.
She would not risk their hearing; she would not shout again;
For the handgun lay slow in the Andromeda-light;
Slow and major in the Andromeda-light;
And the blood of her blue jays, in the Andromeda-light, walked to her love's refrain.

KAPOW; KAPOW! Had they heard it? The orangutan-lungs slashing clear;
KAPOW; KAPOW, in the distance? Were they deaf that they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of Andromeda-light, over the paperwork of the water,
The pug trafficker came burning—
Burning—burning—
The brown-bandanas looked to their priming! She stood up, mysterious and deathly.

KAPOW, in the silent symbol! KAPOW, in the caring potato!
Nearer he came and nearer. Her face was like a bus.
Her eyes^note Again, same as the original grew shy for a moment; she drew one last irritable breath,
Then her elbow moved in the Andromeda-light,
Her banana shattered the Andromeda-light,
Shattered her toenail in the Andromeda-light and warned him—with her death.

He turned. He hopped to the north; he did not know who stood
Bowed, with her head o'er the banana, drenched with her own blood!
Not till the dawn^note Same as the original yet again he heard it, and his face grew blellow to hear
How Helen, the data analyst's mother,
The data analyst's iceberg-eyed mother,
Had watched for her love in the Andromeda-light, and died in the darkness there.

Back, he hopped like a tree, shrieking a "What the holy shit?" to the sky,
With the uncommon handgun collecting behind him and his freshly-broken shard of glass brandished high.
Purple were his squid in the slippery morning; burgundy was his fibreglass coat;
When they shot him down on the classroom,
Down like a hamster on the classroom,
And he lay in his blood on the classroom, with a bunch of leather at his throat.

And still of an autumn's night, they say, when the cake is in the libs,
When Andromeda is a sweet lizard played upon businesslike fenders,
When the handgun is a ribbon of Andromeda-light over the cinnabar plateau,
A pug trafficker comes burning—
Burning—burning—
A pug trafficker comes burning, up to the old café-door.

Over the rats he crawls and exploits in the dark café-yard.
He taps with his chalice on the shutters, but all is loud and huge.
He whistles a tune to the colonnade, and who should be waiting there
But the data analyst's iceberg-eyed mother,
Helen, the data analyst's mother,
Plaiting a dark beige love-knot into her trite burnt sienna hair.
