Eh, another netflix animation series, figured out I could do thread for it if anyone cares to discuss it. Pretty cute show, bit odd pacing but it did have charm and well done parts. Though I still have no clue where they got the airship

Oh hey! I literally just found out about this show.

I only saw like one still, but the character designs have gotten me to google it like crazy.

I'm still hemming and hawing about actually watching it though...

I've only watched the first episode so far (probably watch the rest at some point), but the first episode has some weird pacing. It also does a really crappy job introducing the characters, but I heard that it was a remake of a series of animated films or something, so that might explain it.

Maybe the first episode was a whole movie crammed down, cause that would explain the bizarre pacing a lot, actually.

I've heard of these movies before and I'm surprised they got a series.

I'll watch it eventually, but I have a lot of stuff in my queue to go down first.

Okay, I watched another couple of episodes. The pacing gets a bit better, and it's a cryptozoology-themed thing involving mythological creatures from around the world. Mostly lesser known ones. The second episode involves the Jersey Devil, for example.

It could use a higher animation budget, but it's genuinely interesting to see an animated series from Latin America.

I am curious about the deal with Theodora (the red-head), because she appears to be a ghost...from hundreds of years after the series takes place. She even has a smart phone.

Wait, its based on film series? .-. Huh, that could explain what the heck is up with character introductions being kinda non existent

Brilliant move by Netflix to remove the movies right around the series having its premiere. tongue

I've watched the first movie and started the first few episodes of the show. The show seems to be its own thing, basically a reboot of the continuity started by the four movies. The show removes half the cast from the first movie and Theodora, for some reason, seems more like she used to be from modern times rather than the show's period's past.

So, you don't necessarily need to see the movies, but at least the first one does a better job introducing the characters with some context than the first episode of the show itself.

I finished the show. It gets way better as it goes on, like the writers were figuring out what they were doing during the process. Granted, the show has a general issue with dropping the set-up of an episode. There's at least two episodes where it feels like an In Medias Res, but the establishment of the premise never actually happens. The characters can be really inconsistent sometimes too. Like, the creepy doll episode. Leo buys a Chucky-style marionette that wants to turn everyone into dolls and gets really weird with it, and he acts really weird the whole episode, and the doll apparently has nothing to do with his behaviour.

And the reveal of Theodora's situation is a little out there, but it does explain things.

I do hope it gets another season because there's genuinely something there, it just needs a bit more polish. One big advantage the show has is that while the first season villain is dealt with, there's at least two other characters who can fit into the role seamlessly, and there's a ton of mythology they can work from as well.

It's been confirmed for a second season.

Even though the globe-trotting premise of the first season was pretty cool, I hope there's more focus on Mexican folklore. The movies explore it, too, but they aren't as popular an well-liked as the show. Plus, it'd be cool to see if/how they adapt elements from those movies (like Xochitl).

EDIT: Link fix'd.

Two things:

1) WOO-HOO for the show getting a season 2!

2) That hyperlink goes to a Justice League Action short...

The show started out kind of blah, what with the near complete lack of introductions and the bizarre pacing early on (and a couple times later. The creepy doll episode did not have a strong beginning), but it was starting to get somewhere by the end. If the increase in quality continues, it might cross the line into consistently good.

The show is among the 54 nominees in the inaugural Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards.

Specifically for the Quirino Award for Best Ibero-American Animation Series.

The winners will be announced on April 7.

No. It only got announced as being a thing recently, and Netflix tends to be very, very tight lipped about release dates for original TV series unless they’re a huge deal.

It’s quite possible that we’ll only find out a month ahead of time.

Just wanted to say I finished the series some time ago and it's pretty awesome! Yeah, the first episode kind of drew me away, but it really picks up by the second episode.

I had a crazy theory that Teodora's parents were scientists trying to crack the secret to travelling through time, but it was a bust, causing Teodora to lapse into a coma and fling her spirit centuries into the past, but that got Jossed once the Golem episode revealed the coma happened via a truck crash slamming her into a coma and she learned astral projecting from the skull lady (forgot her name). I'm extremely curious about how Teodora will help the team out in season 2 what with her being alive and not in a coma...

By the way, is anyone kind of surprised the voice recording (at least for the English dub) was at Klasky-Csupo? No one's heard from those guys in years, right? And apparently the English cast members have no references beyond this show? (Though I might be wrong?)

Where else can I watch it beside Netflix? I hope there will be a DVD soon.

I hear its awesome. Terrible title, though, very generic.

Pretty much anything would be better, really. Legend Quest is very, very generic. You could call the Illiad a legend quest. Or Tomb Raider. Or any number of stories involving legends and quests. It has zero connection to this specific show, really.

Even just the hero's name would have been better.

Optimism is a duty.

It's kind of the darnedest thing because I have no problem with the title. (Though thinking about it, maybe something like Leo vs. The Legends would be less generic? Maybe?)

Actually, if anything, my main gripe is the generic episode titles. Like, aside from the first episode, the episode titles are just the featured legend...and that's it. I would've spiced it up with excited episode titles, like:

  • Episode 2: "Flight of the Jersey Devil!"
  • Episode 3: "Nightmares with The Mart!" or "The Village of Nightmares!"
  • Episode 4: "Into the Lair of Medusa's Ghost!"
  • Episode 5: "A Tussle with the Vodnik!"
  • Episode 6: "The Bargain with Fenrir!"
  • Episode 7: "Rise of the Tooth Fairy!" or "When Tooth Fairies Attack!"
  • Episode 8: "Rampage of the Kaiju!"
  • Episode 9: "The Curse of Nu Gui!"
  • Episode 10: "An Evening with Mister Madera!"
  • Episode 11: "Wrath of the Chilan!"
  • Episode 12: "The Deadly Task of the Golem!"
  • Episode 13: "When Legends Collide!" (Though admittedly, "The Serpent and the Egg" is fine as is.)

Bump.

Last week, I responded to an unpopular opinion tweet.

#BuddyThunderstruck and #LegendQuest REALLY need second seasons. Please? Pretty please?

Today, it got a response from Legend Quest's creative director.

Granted! Stay tuned for more #LegendQuest!

Hope it's true...
