In the beginning, there was nothing but two eggs and the constantly expanding ethereal sea of the night sky. When that egg hatched, the universe gave birth to two Dragons. The first was the Earthly Ryuujin, who gave birth to the elements, the Earth, and the various lives that live on them. The second was the Heavenly Ryuujin, who gave birth to the sun, the stars, and the moons. The two Dragons, when together, gave birth to the other Dragons that build up the Ryuujin Pantheon.

When the various forms of sentient life came to be, the Ryuujin started to guide them. Some guided them to love, others guided them through wars, and others guided them to thrive. But what became the talk of legends and lore was of how these Dragons was set people off on quests across the world. From the highest of peaks to the pits below, it has become customary to go on these life shaping-sometimes even life consuming quests to discover something. Who they are, what their purpose is, even something that has never been seen by man or Demihuman eyes before.

The purpose of these journeys can very. Some will claim that they were put on this path by the Heavenly Dragon, mother of all Ryuujin. Some will say they are on the quest to find some great treasure and will go to the ends of the earth for it. And others could be out of necessity, to survive and rebuild what they have long since lost to war and disaster. But whatever this quest be, it's not unheard of for a man to simply drop everything they're doing and to leave the life they once knew to go out into the world.

Be sure to tread carefully and try to win the favor of the Ryuujin, for they will guide you. Be it to fortune or to your own demise, we will see.

Well, I hope that you enjoyed that little opening.

Hello, beautiful friends! Welcome to Ryuutama: Tales to Tell! I'd like to, first, thank you for clicking here. Second, if the name sounds familiar to any of you, that is because I'm basing this RP off of a tabletop RPG that was translated back in, I believe, 2013. I was rather interested in it, but had nobody to play it with, so I thought I'd try to do that kind of RP here. Keep in mind that you don't have to had play this game beforehand to play here. Anyone and everyone is welcome.

Now then, the big theme of the tabletop is adventure, so that's the big draw I'm trying to do here. You, the players are not Warriors or Wizards or adventurers of any kind. You are, essentially, the NP Cs of a typical RPG thrown into the roll of adventuring. You're Miners, Bakers, Minstrels, and all sorts of normal folk who have come together to go on a quest. The quest for what? Well, that's the thing: it could be for anything. Your character could be on some sort of pilgrimage, maybe you're looking for something, or maybe you just wanna travel. It can be for any reason, but since it's better to travel in a group, you all decide to travel together. Characters can come and go when they please, die of either disasters or disease, be attacked by wildlife, and maybe even find love or meet Gods(the Ryuujin).

Just cause your characters aren't exactly your typical RPG Heroes doesn't mean they can't know magic or carry weapons. Your abilities could tie into your job(like, being a soldier, so of course you carry a gun or sword) or it's something you studied for protection(a Merchant who learned Fire Magic to protect your store) or some other excuse that you can come up with.

I may create a character that will drive the plot, but for the most part, the plot is just "you travel in a group just because and things happen". Speaking of wish, if you want your characters quest to have a bigger part of the plot, we can discuss it within the Discussion Thread-when I make it. Also, if there's any destinations you wanna go, than also don't be afraid to say something. You can also add various forms of wildlife or any other forms of World Building that you wanna put into this.

And, the last thing to mention is that don't think your character has to be Human. All sorts of creatures walk across the land of Ryuutama. So there's few limitations on what your character can be. Just remember that no Dragon-People, cause dragons are Gods and the closest thing to this as a race would be the Ryuujin, no exceptions. I have a few things jotted down for you to work off of, but for the most part, almost anything is free game.

    open/close all folders

     Playable Races
  • Human
    • I don't gotta describe this, now do I? Humans are the vanilla race, but hey, nothing wrong with vanilla.

  • Elf
    • A Demihuman Race of long-lived, generally beautiful humanoids. While not immortal, they do live for much longer than most races. Distinguished by their long, pointed ears. Is a scholarly race and tends to have more academic races. Magic is often practiced commonly in their houses.

  • Dwarf
    • A Demihuman Race of strong humanoids. Live longer than humans, but not as long as Elves. Are naturally stronger than most races and tend to take up jobs that require heavy-lifting or construction of some kind. Dwarves stand at around 4'0 and under, males usually having thick, bushy beards.

  • Kobold
    • A Demihuman Race of humanoid dogs. Are a warrior race, be they for honor or otherwise. Various in looks, but in general, they resemble various dog breeds. Have very strong senses of smell and are strongly devoted to the Heavenly Ryuujin.

     Locations
  • Toperhaven
    • Built at the base of a forest, Toperhaven is a relatively large village. Many people pass through Toperhaven, either on their own quests, or simply to do trade. Many people have left Toperhaven to go on their own quests, which is why it's such a popular spot for many travelers to go to on their own quests. Toperhaven is home to many races who call this place their home, very diverse in culture and believes, and is always welcome. is known for its agriculture-more specifically, their delicious berries.

     Misc Worldbuilding
  • Religion in Ryuutama is usually, in some form, the worship of the Ryuujin. There are various Ryuujin, such as Sun Ryuujin, Rain Ryuujin, so on and so forth. People tend to prey to these specific Ryuujin if they want something that's under that Ryuujin's domain. For the most part, the main 2 Ryuujin that people in general prey too are the Earthly Ryuujin and the Heavenly Ryuujin. When referring to them, they are referred to as the 'Holy Father' or 'Holy Mother' respectively and the 'Holy Creators' when preyed to in unison.

  • Dinosaurs exists. They're not extinct and they are often used as cattle, beasts of labor, and mounts. Be wary of wild Tyrannosauruses.

  • Magic exists and is something that you can learn. Basic magic can be taught in most schools as a class elective(like levitation, animal communication, and other small stuff). More specific magic(Elemental Magic, Healing Magic, Animal-Themed Magic, Alchemy) requires more specific teaching, like a Master to an apprentice.

And now for the character sheet!

I've heard of this and my GM once ran a game for some other friends. I'd like to know what the fuss is all about.

Oh, nice, I saw the Thrilling Intent guys run this awhile back! I'll be down! I'll hammer out a sheet soon!

I backed the Kickstarter to translate Ryuutama so I have a book but I've never had an occasion to use it. Is this still a thing that might happen?

Never even heard of this game before, but I’m intrigued. Thinking of playing a young male Kobold chef. Perhaps with a drinking problem. I’ll get that character sheet soon.

Okay, a little surprised by the sudden second wind this is getting since I made the opening post in February. @.@ But if people wanna play it, I wouldn't mind running this.

Yo I literally made a character sheet in the Ryuutama rules. Glad y'all thread necromancers were around to guilt me for never making a character for this thing.

  • Name: Mimiko Minami
  • Race: Half-Kobold
  • Gender: F
  • Age: 29
  • Appearance: WANWANWANWANWANWANWAN. Mimiko is 5'7.
  • Background: Mimiko's lived a life of drudgery up till this point. She's never been one to stand out too much, and her biracial descent meant that she always felt like an outsider among both the elves and the kobolds. The ears were a big enough deal that elves noticed them, but she was also clearly not doggy enough to be a real kobold either. She dove into her work, but that didn't do much either. But by then she believed herself to be "too late" or something, and for awhile gave up on dreams of adventure or exploration. It was only with the death of a random old man across the way that she realized no, she needed to get out there and live her life! Mimi set out on her journey determined to find something to truly have a passion for, something separate from her work.
  • Job: Tailor
  • Skills: Mimiko did learn how to use a spear, mostly to catch fish just in case or to fend off wild animals, and she can actually get the materials to make the coats that she sells in addition to making the capes from those materials.
  • Starting Equipment: See character sheet

Funny enough, I just got the actual rules for this the other day, so your sheet looks legit.

Anyway, Mimiko is accepted!

Interested. Odd question, are names required to be Japanese?

I was asking because I'm planning on repurposing a character from another game who's Finnish. Also you mentioned guns. What's the tech level here? Asking because he's a hunter and I'm wondering if bow, rifle or crossbow would be more appropriate.

Oh hey, this thread is still here!

I should get around to actually reading the book. I'd have both a use for the book and a reason to hang out here again.

Please check the date of the most recent post before posting to these dead threads yadda yadda Hydragem never sticks around for his own games and vanishes for months at a time etcetera.
