Double-checked this in ATT before I removed a YMMV example that I'd spotted. ATT confirmed that this isn't a trope and shouldn't be used in examples at all.

There were nearly 1800 wicks of Fetish Fuel examples on the Related page, so I'm just going to be cleaning up those examples. Most of the examples I've spotted so far can just be replaced with the word "fanservice" and the entry won't need changing in any way, so that seems to be what the misuse is: using Fetish Fuel when it's a fanservice example that's being discussed.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Be sure that it's actually Fanservice, of course.

So do we not want it anywhere on the wiki? even ymmv pages?

Looks that way. At the very least, no out of universe examples, ever, as per 5P.

Just to clear up a misconception, 5P has nothing to do with this.

For the record, In-Universe examples belong on Fetish.

Does compute. An example section and examples on work pages are not the same thing.

Yeah, I've been rewording examples where I can, if they can be kept. To be honest, most of what I've been removing have been sinkholes rather than full examples, so taking away the link hasn't affected the content of the example.

I'll bear that in mind about the in-universe examples. I've only encountered two so far.

I'm down to 1277 wicks. The vast majority are turning out to be sinkholes.

Of the rest, I've moved a number to Fetish because the entry states it's an in-universe event (so thanks for flagging that situation up, as it means we get to keep the example under a different trope).

Query about index pages. I've left it listed in index pages such as Example Sectionotomy but should it be removed from indices of actual tropes, given that it's not a trope?

Nah, indexes don't care really.

One, Fetish Fuel Shouldn't have the YMMV banner if it isn't allowed on YMMV pages, 2, and this isn't exactly a "short term project" but more of an Elephant in the Room but the Fetish page doesn't describe what a fetish is. "Hanging a lampshade" on the fact something is wrong doesn't change the fact something is wrong. Don't know if the repair shop is at capacity but that will be my next stop, and if it is full, you've been warned of what will be pushed through when it isn't.

The YMMV banner can stay, it is an Audience Reaction after all.

Just an update. I haven't forgotten about this. Life's been a bit busy, so I've been doing it in small chunks. I've got the wicks below 900 now. I'm leaving indexes alone, and finding alternatives where possible. However, the vast majority are sinkholes. So, I think the main problem with Fetish Fuel is that people are potholing with abandon when they shouldn't be.

Question about locked pages: will I be able to request on the edit page for the removal (with replacement as relevant) of links from locked pages? If so, I'll do it at the end once I've reduced the wicks to a minimum — it won't be completely dewicked because there are some pages where the reference is relevant.

Yes, but you can also ask for edits as you come across them.

Apologies for not having had the time recently to do large doses of this.

I'm now below 700 and I've done everything prior to the letter N and after the letter T.

Now below 600, and only tropes P-T left to do.

Now below 500, only S-T left to do.

Once I've done that, I'll put together any example from the locked pages that might need to be amended on the edit thread. Beyond that, the only things left will be from Index pages, certain trope descriptions where it remains relevant to list it, and any locked pages where it's appropriate to keep the link.

I'm estimating that, once I'm done, there will be somewhere in the region of 250-300 wicks remaining.

As I've mentioned previously, the vast majority of what I've ended up removing has been gratuitous potholing and sinkholing.

This is now down to 47 articles that mostly consist of Administrivia, indexes, trope descriptions and locked pages.

I think this clean-up thread is now complete.

The vast majority of the problem was sinkholing and most of the examples that could be kept were fetish examples (i.e., in-universe).

I got some of the problem wicks; most of the other links are appropriate. Closing this up.
