[up][up]Different settings and characters. Seeing vampires and the like in the background of the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, or in the case of John Morris, World War I, could be really fun to see.

Yeah, but don't rush the story for this one.

I want a ton of foreshadowing for the War of 1999. I also want them to skip it entirely.

Glad to hear reception seems to be tentatively positive.

I personally probably won't watch it for a bit, but that's because I only get Netflix for a month at a time and wait for new stuff to pile up unless its a "must watch" show for me.

Aside: From checking the tags on AO 3 turns out something like a third of the fanfic is tagged Alucard/Sypha/Trevor.

Their chemistry is the second best part of the show.

Agreed, that is a slash pairing that I entirely sympathize with and understand.

This is, technically, a OTT pairing.

A slash pairing would be just Trevor and Alucard.

Trevard?

Trevard.

The rabbit hole runs deep. (Not meant as a double entendre. This time.)

Back in the day Castlevania was predominantly fanfiction land for a huge dose of M/M slash, thanks to the big cast of incredibly pretty men who are canonically obsessed with each other. The games themselves had a bunch of one-note damsels so they could say "No homo though" but it was incredibly easy to ignore them. Hell, they tried to retcon the one lady hero the franchise had out of existence.

What I'm trying to get at is the Sypha Belnades and Lisa Tepes we have today are both a blessing and a miracle.

The show as a whole feels like a miracle to me.

We're talking about a game series that's mostly dead now, owned by a company committed mostly just to gambling machines and other low-effort cash grabs, from which spawned an adult-oriented horror-action show...and it's actually great. The production values are really good, the animation itself is solid, the voice acting is excellent, and the writing itself is on-point and has the unquestionably best versions of all its respective characters. Not that that's hard to do when the writing in Castlevania is usually paper thin, but even without that comparison it's legitimately pretty decent on its own merits.

I was also surprised that the show only has one writer (Warren Ellis) doing all the scripts. That's pretty rare for any show animated or otherwise.

I have a few problems with Ellis going overboard with his typical Ellis-isms from time to time, but the worst of it was in a script that dates back to ten years ago, and he seems to have reined it in for the second season. I'm a bit worried about the review bringing up the priors as it's possible Ellis might go into more geographically misplaced Author Tracts about Catholicism, but it seems to be a fairly minor subplot.

TFS argued that the games most appropiate for adaptation are those without much plot but a lot of backstory material. A well-defined setting, in other words.

Because those are the games where an adaptation to a non-interactive medium actually adds something.

Castlevania fits that bill pretty well, so the fact that the show is good is, to me and in hindsight, less miraculous as the fact it even exists in the first place.

[up][up]Here’s hoping. It doesn’t endear me to his work given how it has the tendency to get really really long winded.

The reviews also seem to imply Setup for a next season with Carmilla, but remaining throughly in this time periods which is starting to get admittedly a bit long in the tooth for me. It’s funny because given how much of S2 focused on Dracula’s lamentations, I kinda feel like to give him a happy ending after everything done to make him sympathetic, you have to do the Sorrow games and Soma Cruz.

If it was up to me, after this it'd be Symphony of the Night and then the Sorrow games and that's it.

I want time skips because seeing Dracula become increasingly tired and fed up every time he's resurrected would be great.

Personally I'd like to see the Morrises make it in since I thought the welding of the Bram Stoker continuity into the story was a cool idea, and plus it would be good setup for Sorrow. And I'm biased but I'd like to see Shanoa make it in somehow, hopefully to tie up the loose end around how the Belmonts fell into decline after SOTN, since Konami will never do it.

I'd like to see Ritcher and Maria's misadventures at least as a few flashbacks during SOTN and the War of 1999.

Lament of Innocence... nah, that ain't happening, I'm happy Leon even made a cameo.

[up]If there’s a next major arc in the story, it’s probably Rondo and Symphony, and then the final arc is the Sorrow games. Personally I would like to see the Morris clan lead into that since it might show Dracula really thinking over if the Demon Castle War is a good idea or if it’s a more purposeful way of ending the nightmarish cycle he’s trapped in.

That and Richter is much different from Trevor. So him having to stop Dracula with a sassy little girl could be a funny if quite different dynamic than Sypha and Trevor.

It's possible we might get expansions on the Leon era, but the Mathias twist isn't all that interesting characterwise past the plot twist, and his anguish over his wife's death comes off as Wangsty for anything other than pointing out why Lisa's might have affected him so much.
