It's a neat design. If you hadn't told me it was Grant, however, I'd have never known.

Now I'm getting idea of my Netflix Composite Grant frequently going into the castle's deep moats and walking out the otherside with the same stern expression and covered in seaweed.

If they keep or reference the ghost ship level from the original game, I'm sure they'll crack a joke about that. Maybe the boat was Grant's in the past.

Alucard's design◊ was less distinctive in the NES days too, IMO.

He looks like Dracula's tax accountant.

Only three things cross Dracula. Alucard, a living Belmont, and the IRS.

I mean, the premise of the Bram Stoker novel was that Jonathan Harker was a Solicitor with Dracula as his client...

A couple of things about the novel Dracula: He travels to England by boat, but vampires cannot cross running water. Drac found a way around this by traveling with a few dozen crates full of soil, which he draws his power from. There's also a scene where he walks around town in broad daylight with no ill effects, though he doesn't have any vampire powers while he does so.

One thing that becomes a big issue in the games, but the series hasn't touched upon, is that Drac's castle is both A. alive, and B. basically a Phylactery, because as long as the castle is okay, Dracula can come back. They end up killing Dracula for good by cutting off his connection to his castle.

[up]Wasn't his weakness to sunlight not introduced until the movie Nosferatu?

Yep, totally Nosferatu's fault. In the book, the boxes with earth play a waaaaay more important role. Basically it is grave earth/earth from his home which he needs to survive and a large part of the story is about finding those boxes and making them unusable.

Basically the garlic and the power of religious symbols are from the book.

The Sunlight is from Nosferatu.

I might be wrong, but the thing with the wooden stakes might be from the Universal movie

I think that, in the novel, vampires are fine as long as they are close to some soil, which is abundant on land, but nonexistent on the ocean. Drac basically abandons the boat full of dirt as soon as he arrives in England. Though, if memory serves, he did have a residence in England filled with dirt from home. I'm not sure how necessary it is that the dirt was from home. It might be a personal preference, or it might be important that it's from Romania, I'm not 100% sure. In the later parts of the book he was on the road and didn't have any dirt with him and it wasn't a huge problem for him.

Have we considered that we might already have seen monster Grant in the form of one of the bandits that Isaac butchered and revived?

Yes and no. Impaling Dracula through the heart works to paralyze him, giving the protagonists an opportunity to kill him. They do it with a metal knife, however, not a wooden stake.

In that regard, the Castlevania series actually got it right. The stake only incapacitated Dracula; Trevor had to then decapitate him to actually kill him.

[up][up][up] No. In the book, Dracula ships boxes of the earth to different properties in London (apparently he plans to relocate - that's why he needs Harker), and later flees with the last box.

I actually can't remember there something about trouble to travel over water in the book (though I guess Dracula did travel with one of the boxes), the emphasis is more on how the whole crew dies and the captain brings the ship into the harbour bound to the rudder. It's a little bit overdramatic to be honest.

You have to remember though that the book isn't really written linear, it is mostly a collection of diary entries, newspaper articles aso.

[up][up] I don't think Trevor landed the killing blow, actually. I think that was Sypha since that's the point where his body releases all those damned souls. Dracula needed to be staked, decapitated and cremated for him to finally go down. Geez.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (The character) is a complete wuss though. Also, didn't he have an army of evil Gypsies? Haha, man you really need to change some stuff in that story to make it adaptable nowadays.

[up][up][up] Oh shit. Ooooooh shit. That's a epileptic tree i do not want to climb.

Yep, there were evil Gypsis in the end, too. But frankly, there is one thing in which the original book is better than most adaptations: The character of Mina. In the book she is quite smart and heroic. In most adaptations, she is just some trophy for Dracula which needs to be protected.

You could make the argument that the reason Dracula was such a wuss in the novel, is because he's NOT in his castle. The same castle he draws his power from and lets him come back from the dead. In the castle he's a monster with all these powers. Outside his castle he's just an ordinary vampire.

I just finished watching this series and was surprised this was made in the West. I love this series!

I watched episode 7 three times! It has to have the best fight scenes I have seen in western animation.

...

It should probably be the other way around actually.

Well ok, as a Jedi, Rey is closer to a mage like Sypha, but as the main character, she's arguably closer to Trevor...then again, Alucard came off more as the main character in this than Trevor did near the end so...

By the way, I would sincerely recommend Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust to anyone who's enjoying this series. Its dub is a bit dated, but it has a surprisingly decent story and it's worth it for the stunning visuals alone.

Alucard would be Luke and Dracula as Vader. For obvious reasons.
