...There's a difference between "best record" and "best album"? >.>

How did Alessia Cara win Best New Artist when her first top 10 song was three years ago?

[up][up] Record of the Year is awarded to a single track. Album of the Year is awarded to, well, an album.

[up] I can't even think of an excuse the voters can use to justify their choice.

What’s the difference between Song of the Year & Record of the Year?

[up] Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy she finally won her Grammy. It just strikes me as odd that she was nominated in the first place.

"Song" is for the writers of the track and "Record" is for the singer/performers/producers, I think.
As for the Best New Artist deal, tl:dr, version, the definition of the award is so vague it allows a shitload of Loophole Abuse. (It isn't for literal debuts, it's for the release that "brought the artist into the public conscious" or some nonsense.)

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

[up] I’d still take “God’s Plan” over “Rockstar”.

So I'm making a project of listening to all the "Best Rock Album" nominees (mostly for the first time), and might do it for a few other categories too. So far I've gotten to Prequelle and Pacific Daydream - out of those I'm rooting for Ghost, though PD grew on me a bit when I tried to divorce it from my idea of what Weezer is "supposed" to sound like. Kinda interesting that Weezer got nominated when the album didn't do that well commercially or critically - one theory I've heard is it's because "Africa" did well but wasn't eligible for anything itself due to being a cover song.

[up] Do you think you’ll listen to the Album of the Year nominees?

Hot take: Luke Combs should’ve been up for Best New Artist last year.

[up] I plan on it after a short break - naturally almost everything has one song that radio has played to death over the past year note , but I guess it'll be interesting to hear them in an album context.

I did just listen to all of the "best alternative" albums - I came into this wondering what the Academy's idea of the difference between "alternative" and "rock" was, because certain artists nominated in the former are ones I've heard on "rock" radio stations before (specifically Beck and Arctic Monkeys). The thing that seems to tie all these albums together is that they're not guitar-based enough to be "rock", yet too arty/quirky to be "pop" albums. Even Arctic Monkeys' Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino sorta fits that description due to being centered on piano, vocals and lyrics, though other albums I've heard of theirs are unquestionably rock of some sort. Anyway, I decided I wanted David Byrne to win, but Beck seems more likely to, which I'm fine with too.
