With a burst of Light from below, divine fire rushes up to meet Rsama and Osroes. The cataphract raises his shield, focus in his helm-guarded eyes; the pegaz tucks his wings, increasing their speed; their bond keeps them steady against the onrushing storm.

They meet – and even as the blaze overtakes flesh and soul twice as much is repelled with all the efficacy of Anna’s craftsmanship, turning it back on its wielder. Osroes looses a blind, wordless cry, channelling pain barely weakened by the effects of the purified water and drawing strength from Rsama’s determined silence beneath him.

And then the magic ceases. Below, Railen stands with a bloodied blade over a fallen Calderian.

Rsama’s hooves clatter against rock; he stumbles forward a few steps before stopping. Osroes slumps to catch his breath, the determination giving way to fatigue – but also satisfaction. He rubs at Rsama’s neck, offering an appreciative nod to Railen, then another (with a touch of surprise) to Diane as her healing staff does its work, the two standing taller as the tiredness falls away.

He takes stock as the remainder of Tigerlily sweep towards the tower, then looks up the ridge to the Vissans. “We advance on the final Calderian strongpoint – there’s siege further down the path if you so wish but we would appreciate your aid regardless!”

And with that the two glide down, taking position for the assault.

Osroes moves to AM14 and defends.

Requesting that Diane moves to bring her within 5 tiles of as many people as possible and prepares a heal with the Physic Staff, to go to anyone who has been critically wounded during the Enemy Phase or, failing that, whoever lacks most HP.

Bette spits blood onto the ground near her, staring down the remaining Calderians as some of their number march on Ailes, relying on them to watch their backs. Gritting her teeth, she reaches her hand into her sash and pulls out a black ring that she places over her wrist.

"Master, forgive me, but this time... I have to go all out...."

Then she dashes forward, punching at the imposing knight ahead of her.

Move to AJ 11 and attack Calderia 49 with Onyx Bangle.

Round 27: Player Phase

Railen was the first up the tower's stairs. Ailes was still standing at the central crystal spire, pouring his focus so intently into it that he barely reacted in time to dodge the rogue's blade.

"You insolent rats!" he shouted, scrambling to put the crystal between himself and Railen while he tried to sever his magical link to it that prevented him from wielding his magic in close quarters. Too late did he notice as Cassandra's pegasus dove through the tower's ramparts, and the wayward knight drove her spear into his belly on the second thrust, sticking him to the balustrade around the focusing crystal.

Diane had been quick on Railen's heels, but slowed her pace as she reached the top floor to find her rival spy already pinned down. She crossed the chamber toward him, sword poised in hand.

"Where are the Emblem fragments?" she demanded, raising the blade toward his chest.

The Calderian spymaster laughed, the usual dryness of his voice whetted with blood. "You're too late, you treasonous wretch. The fragments are already in King Leoran's hands. All that's left is for him to reassemble them in the essence font at the capitol." He sneered up at his attackers, blood dribbling from the corner of his mouth, and casually uncorked the bottle of elixir at his hip. "As much as it would have pleased me to put you curs down myself, my mission was to delay you, and I have already achieved it. My King marches on the palace this very moment. You may capture me as you like, but you are too l—"

The taunt died on his lips just as the rim of the bottle touched them, Diane's sword driven through his heart. Shock bloomed across his face, as if the spy could not conceive that he wasn't valuable enough to be kept alive.

"May your twisted soul never find peace, you venomous blowhard," Diane hissed, and twisted her weapon in his chest, tearing his insides apart with steel and magic.

As the tower's magical hum faded to silence, the remaining Calderian forces outside broke ranks and fled, their numbers and advantage spent and insufficient, especially as the rest of the Tigerlilies and the Vissan forces that had finished securing the portal compound were catching up.

"Is everyone alright?" Addelus asked, rhetorically as he descended to heal Kiri.

"No, not really," Grendan answered the prince as he watched the Calderians' morale shatter. Heath hissed hungrily in the general direction of Ailes' corpse, but Grendan pulled back on the reins, snapping, "Don't touch that- you don't know what kind of diseases he had!"

His attention now in that area, though, he idly commented, "I never particularly liked him anyway. Dastard kept going on about the citizens existing for the sake of their king or some such rot."

Osroes makes a last swipe at empty air with his spear as his foe turns to withdraw. Nodding, he turns to look up at the tower with a glare – and then witnesses its source of power fade. With Grendan’s words, there is a moment of triumph… Triumph that rapidly hollows to nothingness.

Frowning at the oddity of the feeling, the cataphract slides from Rsama’s back, reaching up to rub his companion’s neck. He removes his helm with his other hand; then he leans sideways, placing his head against Rsama’s own. “I think…” He says slowly and softly, considering. “I think part of me still hoped he might be redeemed. Eventually.”

Osroes stands there for a moment, gaze steady, before looking back – first to check that the retreating Calderians are still retreating, then catching sight of the rest of the company. He smiles. “The compound is secure, then? Everyone is well?”

"Yes, and none too soon," Greham nodded, his coat sporting a few new holes revealed by the freshly-healed skin peeking through the gashes. "We definitely would have been overrun before much longer if you hadn't gotten the telemancers back." He stepped up to Ailes' corpse, and nudged the slain spymaster with his boot. "Were you able to stop him passing on the fragments?"

"No," Diane sighed. "He'd already passed them on before we ever arrived. Leoran already has them."

Scherwiz spat a curse under their breath. "Then it all be over afore it's even begun, has it? We've missed our last chance at turnin' the tide."

"Actually..." Addelus mused, and looked up from his chin with a start as dozens of heads turned toward him. "Actually, I think we might still have a chance. If my studies are right, then an artifact of the Emblem's power can't be reconstructed just anywhere. It would require an incredible amount of magical energy to be channeled into the Emblem to restore it to its original power. Leoran will have to take it to such a source, and then will need time to empower it."

Diane and Greham turned to one another and said at once, "The Imperial Palace."

"I don't follow," Tigra said. "What's at the Imperial Palace?"

"The Rock of Vis," Diane explained. "A natural crystal obelisk that's a conduit for immense magical energy. The early Vis built a fortress around it as the heart of their kingdom, but as the Empire grew, that fortress was converted into the Imperial Palace."

"Leoran's going for two birds with one stone," Greham said. "He remakes the Emblem and eliminates the Emperor in one battle, and then nothing in Tropera can stand against him."

Grendan raised an eyebrow at this. "But he'd need to be able to actually reach this Rock in order to use its power, wouldn't he? Does he have some sort of alternate route, or is he dedicating his entire military to forcing his way in?" He stroked his mustache thoughtfully as he added, "If it's an alternate route, he's probably only lightly guarded in order to minimize visibility, while forcing his way in would be far slower since he'd need to make his way through the entire garrison, and all the reinforcements Vissan can muster. Either way... far less intimidating at a glance than we feared."

Diane shook her head. "I couldn't say for certain. I've never been to the palace myself, but I'd hazard a guess that there's some manner of secret way in and out. Even if there is, though, I would guess that empowering the Emblem will take time, so he'll want to seize the palace first either way."

"The Imperial Capitol lies between here and the palace," Greham chimed in. "My gut says he'll dedicate the bulk of his forces to sieging the city and take a smaller force to attack the palace. Otherwise he'd be leaving himself open to a rear attack by the army. If we cut across the countryside we can avoid getting entangled there, and make better time to the palace ourselves."

Addelus nodded and spurred his pegasus forward. "We've no time to waste, then," he said. "Onward to the palace! Whatever may await us when we get there."

As the Company and the Vissans geared up to go, Tigra pushed through the crowd after Malia, and tapped the younger woman on the shoulder. Malia turned to face her and a hurtful pang struck the knight's heart as her former ward flinched and turned away at seeing that it was her.

"Malia, may I have a word before we go?"

Malia nodded wordlessly, still facing away from the knight.

Tigra grimaced, but she had never been one to turn from a battle that had to be fought. "When I saw you at Herthdon, I was overjoyed," she said. "To see you alive and well. Thriving, even. You've grown into such a splendid woman since we parted ways, and I've missed you so much this last year. I thought certain that you would feel the same, but you've barely spared me a glace or a word since we reunited. Please, Malia, what troubles you?"

Malia drew a deep breath, steeling herself, and said, "For the last year, not a week has gone by that I didn't think of you. Remembered you, dying at Greham's feet on the other side of a chasm, while I could do nothing but scream. Dreamed of waking up one day to find you alive and beside me. And today, I woke up, and found that dream was a nightmare.

"You were alive, and standing against us. Willingly, knowingly, fighting alongside the man that took you away from me, for the Empire that took you away from me. How am I supposed to feel?"

Tigra flinched at the girl's words. She had expected as much, but to hear it directly from her still stung deeply. "My allegiance has never changed, Malia. I fight now for Frael, just as I always have. Greham is a good man. Our conflict was never driven by hate for one another, only by circumstance."

Finally, Malia turned to face her, staring into her eyes with steel behind her tears. "We were also fighting for Frael. Would you have fought against us?"

Tigra closed her eyes, unable to tell Malia anything but the truth. "If that had been what it came to... yes."

"Would you have fought against me?"

Tigra opened her eyes again as a wave of numbness at the suggestion washed over her. "No," she said. She took a step forward, raised her hand toward the younger woman, and faltered, not knowing whether to reach for her or let her be. "No, never. I could never raise my weapon against you, Malia." Her eyes fell upon the amulet around Malia's neck, the same brooch of silver and sapphire she had given the girl that fateful day at Watchcloud, and lay her hand over it. "Not against my daughter."

Malia's breath was sharp as she clinched her eyes shut against tears that Tigra was pained to find she could not read.

"You needn't accept that role if you do not wish," she said softly. "But know that I will forever hold you there in my heart." She started to lift her hand away from the pendant, but Malia clutched her hands over hers, and leaned forward, resting her head against Tigra's breastplate.

"Thank you," she whispered. "For everything."

They stayed like that for a few moments longer as the rest of the joint forces started their march, then broke apart, both wiping circumspectly at the corners of their eyes.

"We, uh, we should get going, then," Tigra said, adjusting the strap of her axe slung across her back. "We don't want to fall behind."

"Yeah," Malia laughed through one last sob. "Let's go end a two hundred-year war... mom." She sprang off up the road, chasing after the rest of the Company, leaving Tigra to try and catch up in her wake.
