Gravity Falls is a lot of fun. Its mystery plot is cool and the show itself is hilarious.

I should rewatch it one day. After I finally catch up on Amphibia, maybe.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

I've watched the first two episodes of Gravity Falls. This one's definitely a keeper.

Episode 7:

I want to see Aziraphale bond with Michael over human magic in fanfic or fanart now

Janet having to violently eat all her creations sounds pretty horrifying tbh

Well the experiment appears to be a noble failure, but at least they finally got through to Brent at the very end. Eleanor and Michael repeating the season 1 twist was great.

Simone remains pretty frustratingly oblique as a character as a whole, even though her actions and motivations were pretty understandable. I wonder where she and John were when the experiment terminated.

Eleanor drinking the jug was a great ending gag

I only saw the YouTube clip, which was the last scene. And holy shirt, Ben Koldyke's acting was amazing. It's the closest I'll ever get to feeling some sort of sympathy towards Brent.

Derek will eat all the butts of those Janet babies.

Ooh, I loved the episode. It was everything I expect from the show. I totally should have seen it coming, but I haven't. They do the twists so well.

Michael was too adorable. His love for all things human is amazing.

The way Chidi's face crumbles internally when Simone tells him she doesn't believe in soul mates was a great if kinda sad moment.

The evil lough by Eleanor and Michael: top notch.

Jason was on fire. Reminds me "Gunmen of the Apocalypse" of Red Dwarf when the ditzy Cat surprisingly offers invaluable insight, twice in a row, and the group goes with it. "Twice in one lifetime! When you're hot, you're hot."

Pretty good ending. I can definitely see how it sets up a debate and ambiguous ruling by the judge. I wonder what the outcome of that will be.

All this time, all they needed to get intelligent contributions out of Jason was to phrase it in the form of football strategy! The more you know.

I fully anticipate that Gen will rule against them, actually. I mean, we have seven episodes left.

The problem with Gen ruling against them is — what could possibly happen after that that takes up the last six episodes? All the humans get thrown into the Bad Place and ... what? What agency could they possibly have at this point?

Of course, Gen can't declare a final victory for Team Cockroach either.

... Really, I have no possible conception of what's gonna happen next, at this point.

Micheal made a big speech to the demons that the system was fundamentally broken and that if everyone knew what he know they'd support changing things. Perhaps that's legitimately what's going to happen.

Yeah, I also can't see Gen ruling in their favor given that this is only the mid-season. If Gen rules in their favor, then that's the game. Good guys win. Story ends.

If Gen rules against them, though, I'm not sure where it would go from there. Obviously John and Simone's disappearance sets them up to throw a wrench in the clockwork, one way or the other. But what clockwork and what wrench?

I admit, I am completely perplexed as to what's going to happen next.

On the last page there was an exchange about people who expect a lot more credit than they deserve for making token or weak displays of personal improvement. While I see understand where that's coming from, I think these days some people take it too far in the other direction and refuse to give credit even to people who make genuine significant improvement as a person. Like, if a racist genuinely learns to respect people of all races, some people will just say something like "You don't deserve credit just for being a decent person." Given how valuable decency is, and how common indecency is, I've been disagreeing more with that idea lately. Anyone else here wanna give their take?

On the one hand, bad people aren't likely to improve without some reason to do so.

On the other hand, the idea of being rewarding people for being better, when they still kinda suck a lot, rankles at people's sense of justice.

[up]There may be such a thing as being too quick to reward people for minimal improvement, but I think some people are too quick to dismiss the idea of reward for good behavior. They say things like "You should do good because it's the right thing, not because of some reward!" Sure, ideally people would do good for its own sake, but few people are that altruistic. I'd much rather have someone improve for the sake of a reward than not at all. Besides, I think doing good for a reward can be a gateway towards learning to do good for its own sake.

So, on the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic forum a year or two ago, Tobias Drake suggested this show.

A year or two later, I've just finished the first episode. Oooh, boy.

1. Eleanor. You really are a human wastebasket. You've never taken a life certainly but I have the feeling you make life worse for everybody with your very presence. You're not evil, you're just a grade-A scumbag and that feels worse, weirdly enough. I don't know how to describe it. You don't try to hurt people through sadism, you just don't care if you do hurt anybody and you proceed through life being a ridiculously selfish jackass.

2. What the actual fuck just happened? Giraffes, shrimp, ladybugs, flowers biting each other? I know the idea is supposed to be that Eleanor is responsible for this but how?

3. Where's the actual Eleanor who's supposed to be here? Does she go to the Bad Place instead or is this a plot point coming up later?

4. Curious idea about her soulmate whose name I haven't memorized yet: when she talks about how he probably had people be sad about his death whereas nobody probably cares about hers, I have the feeling that might not be true for him.

It's a hunch, really. The sort of self-sacrificing altruism that's needed to get into the Good Place might not leave much space for good ol' human selfishness in the form of prioritizing being with friends and family over helping orphans.
