I can't really say I was expecting the X-Men side of Marvel to be where they leaned into R-rated movies, but I can't say I mind, based on what we've seen so far.

Apparently some reporters have seen the first 40 minutes.

Yeah, io9 and a bunch of other outlets got to see the first 40 minutes and pretty much everybody said it was amazing. I can't wait.

Ya know, say what you will about Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine, you gotta admit that he really does love the character.

He'd have to.

He's been playing him long enough.

To be honest, Jackman is Wolverine. The only thing he gets wrong is being too tall, and that's pretty forgivable in the wake of everything else.

I don't buy it. Deadpool doesn't fit the tone they seem to be trying to sell on the trailers. Should it be confirmed, I'd say we'd have to be careful about the movie.

You know, I was joking with my friend that maybe they would use Deadpool (who's teaming up with Cable, who's known for time-travel shenanigans) as a post-credits thing in Logan to port X-23 back to the "main" X-Men film franchise continuity so they could continue using the character.

[up] (9) ...my god they said something positive.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t much talk about X-23 or her role. I know I’ll personally be disappointed if she’s just a quiet, helpless child through most of the film, and I wish the early buzz had given me more reason to hope otherwise. However, it looks like Logan will at least deliver on the epic, gruff machismo, and that means Wolverine gets to go out in the most Wolverine way possible.

...and X23 is in this?

I mean, I kind of hope she's not a quiet helpless child considering I've never actually seen her be a quiet, helpless child.

-looks at picture someone posted earlier-

Goodness she does look like some kind of quiet, defenseless child. The f'ck? Doesn't she have foot-claws?

-looks at poster and reads synopsis-

...

The trailer has her lunging at a security guard to bury her claws into his neck. I'm pretty sure she won't be a defenseless child.

quiet she might be.

These things are never a straight adaptation, and the timeline of the XCU is all over the place— Jubilee's been at the X-Academy longer than Cyclops? Beast and Havok were both there in the '60s? Emma Frost is dead?

So...yeah, just go with it at this point. It feels a bit like they're combining Old Man Logan and Laura with Cable and Hope Summers. That'd be kind of interesting.

Yes, Laura is in this and no, she isn't a quiet helpless child. From when io9 saw the first forty minutes:
The girl playing Lauren (AKA X-23) is a badass. She has a fight that you won't believe someone that young can do. And she did it herself!

So Hit-Girl then. That makes more sense. At least I hope they weren't exaggerating.

X-23 is (or at least was, pre character development) generally a pretty quiet and reserved kind of person, mostly because of her initial lack of interpersonal skills beyond a) reaching a target and b) brutally dismembering the target. She was never helpless, though she could play the part, but did lack some personal drive and directive until she found a purpose and a cause.
