The Wolverine was already pretty damn close, the PG-13 theatrical version was just a few edits away from being rated R anyway (and an unrated version does exist). I'm thinking especially the self-surgery scene. All the way back in X-Men 2 I couldn't help but notice the Bloodless Carnage as he ripped through the special forces team in the mansion. Generally speaking, ultra sharp foot long claws like that would tear through a lot of flesh.
I can deal with him being "PG-13-ified" in a "main" X-Men film because they're meant for a wider audience. I mean he's still brutal in that X2 scene regardless.
But a Wolverine film, that by it's very nature should be more gritty, violent, and yes, bloody I think. And with The Wolverine, which I do quite like overall BTW, one of my personal biggest disappointments was that they teased an awesome fight between Wolverine and a group of ninjas, some of whom were riding motorcycles, in the snow, and then didn't really deliver on that. And I suspect that that scene was one of the big ones sacrificed for the sake of getting a PG-13 rating.
Indeed, the unrated version has them fight.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."An R-rated Wolverine would be a good fit to finally get a Sabretooth worth a crap on the big screen. The Origins version was not too bad, it definitely showed that he's much smarter and more calculating than the blonde yeti thing from the first movie, but he's basically an evil Wolverine in terms of powers and ferocity. If you don't have to have to worry about keeping it PG you could really have him cut loose, a proper knock-down, dragged out brawl between the two could be epic.

I'm pretty damn certain now that they're going to time travel this character back to interact with the on going movies. (Which of course will cause a third time line)
Perhaps Cable can have her in toe when he turns up in Deadpooler.
Deaderpool? Wait, what comes after dead? Alive? Lifepool? Liverpool?
They do seem to be grooming X-23 as this continuity's Hope, which I kinda like, since Wolverine has been at the heart of this franchise in a way that the Summerses and their various progeny never have. That'd be a neat twist, actually, if she were to carry over into the original timeline by way of Cable & Deadpool.
Why was hope brought back in the comics?
Because (some characters thought) she could 'reactivate' mutants who had been depowered, IIRC. Plus Jean was dead again so they needed a 'red-haired Phoenix girl' fix for whatever reason, and Rachel just got ignored, again.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."Huh! That might be exactly X-23's role in this film.
It'd be kind of a waste, no scratch that a huge waste, to finally bring in X-23 and then only use her in one film/not let her interact with more X-Men characters. Especially since Jackman is leaving and a big part of X-23's character growth involved her interacting with the other MU characters.
Agreed.
Either she'll time travel, or perhaps we'll encounter a different female clone in the past? But that would mean ignoring any character development from this film.
I think they want X-23 to pick up Wolverine's mantle, rather than recasting Logan as some other actor since Jackman is so iconic. So they'll probably keep her.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."I could see them at the very least putting Wolverine "on the shelf" for a number of years, for that very reason. And then down the road maybe they try to bring him back with a new actor, when Jackman's portrayal isn't as fresh in the minds of the audience.
In the meantime, if they want a Wolverine-esque character (which is very likely given their past track-record), the X-23 if the perfect fit. She's "Wolverine" enough, while still being her own character (so it wouldn't feel like a retread of Logan). And as a nice bonus, you'd get another female character in an important role.
Dead link for me

Children of Dievas - my webcomic about the Northern CrusadesWow, everything about this movie's marketing is espectacular, isn't?
"All you Fascists bound to lose."The 1st Wolverine movie was...underwhelming to say the least. The 2nd one was a step in the right direction. Third time's the charm?

Eh, I'm sure she's just a glorified extra
You joke now, then watch if it ends up being true.
‘My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’Hopefully this comes to be, for no one upstages Wolverine in an X-men...I mean...Wolverine film!
The red band trailer could be renamed "aka we're finally giving you the Rated-R Wolverine movie that a lot of you wanted to see."
