I've been watching some clips on You Tube and I noticed for the first time that Dean keeps his surgical tools in a really fancy box with a strange symbol on the front. The Coagula cult's logo, perhaps?
I don't think that was particularly funny. It was just a bunch of gay stereotypes, with barely any jokes besides a pun or two. It's like the comedy is supposed to derive directly from the stereotypes. It comes off as borderline homophobic to me. I'm assuming it wasn't made in bad faith, but I honestly can't tell how it would've been different if it had been.
Ceterum censeo Morbillivirum esse eradicandum. It's pretty common for most gay mockbusters I've seen to be "how many stereotypes can we cram in under a minute", to the point that it loops around to something of an in-joke train.
'Course, now that I think about it, a gay Get Out plot wouldn't make sense as depicted? Wouldn't gay men hijacking straight men's bodies be either pointless or self-defeating?

It would make more sense for straight men to hijack gay men's bodies. Because all of them are ripped. It doesn't seem statistically possible, and yet it's true.
So a lot's been discussed about whether Rose and Jeremy were brainwashed or otherwise forced to comply with their family's scheme, but am I the only one who thinks it might actually be Dean who was having second thoughts about the Evil Plan? Take a look at his face at the beginning here
. That does not look like a man who enjoys what he's about to do to me.
So apparently Peele revealed the backstory of the Order of the Coagula and it's pretty interesting. It seems they're a modern offshoot of an immortality-seeking organization that goes as far back as the Crusades; their original goal was to find the Holy Grail, and over the years they've tried many different methods of achieving immortality before this particular branch hit upon the idea of using brain transplants. I now wonder if other branches that use different methods might still be active; if Peele does turn the film into a whole series of satirical horror movies, it would certainly give him a steady supply of villains.

I have heard it called a horror comedy, actually.
Peele's criticism, incidentally, is twofold - he feels it devalues this specific film, as the main thrust of it was the quite serious social satire, and he feels it devalues horror movies as serious art in general by nominating one for the award everybody knows is at best the silver medal.
The film is dripping with a lot of black comedy mixed with satire, which tends to be comedic as well. It's hard to see the TSA guy subplot and claim it's not a comedy in any form.
But it IS foremost a horror film, which is why the nomination is unusual. The Golden Globes have handicapped themselves by dividing up their categories by genre, two narrow genres at that.
The argument that Get Out is primarily a comedy makes no sense, even factoring the TSA guy's scenes. Because if that's the case, when why the heck aren't the Transformers films, most of the Marvel cinematic universe, and especially Thor: Ragnarok being shoe-horned into that category?
Even worse, there's just no way Get Out is going to win anything, since almost any other film placed in the comedy category is bound to receive more attention and praise. Seriously, I sympathize with Peele, the decision to place the film in comedy instead of horror was beyond stupid and sabotaged any chance of receiving a nomination.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Get Out! is both the top horror movie
and comedy
of all time. So the Golden Globes aren't the only ones.
I've only seen Get Out, but I'd suspect that the only serious competition would be Baby Driver - it's not like they ever take animated films seriously in main categories, and Girl's Trip is probably too much like an actual comedy.
The cynic in me is saying that the reason that Get Out is in Comedy was to put it up against Girl's Trip; both did really well critically and commercially, and why would you want black-led films winning in both categories?

Reminds me of this quote from Rian Johnson
