Reposting again that there is nothing in the official statement that says the film will be live-action.

I see. The didn't mention that it was going to be a live action film directly. But seeing how it compare it to other films like Maleficent, Cinderella and The Jungle Book (the trend isn't hard to spot) it is reasonable to assume it is going to be live action.
And considering two of the good movie staring mostly animals, they could do this movie in vain of Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes by using motion capturing.
First bit of casting news: Donald Glover is the voice of Simba.
And it appears Mufasa will be a Role Reprisal!
Knowing Jones will play Mufasa again, hopefully they can get Irons to return as Scar. Not sure how i feel about Glover as Simba.
It's certainy an unconventional choice, but I won't make a final judgment until I see the film.
So, this is really happening? It's gone out of development and has officially been greenlit?
... Just when you think you know what's going on...
You (not you specifically, people in general) never know what's going on with the Mouse.

Well, you can always predict that they'll greenlight something if it'll make a lot of money.
The last two Disney remakes made a ton of money. The Beauty And The Beast remake will undoubtedly make a shit ton of money as well. So, needless to say, this will make a shit ton of money too when it gets released.
The Jungle Book was actually really good, so I'm hoping that the Lion King remake will be good too.
My sentiments as well.
Variety is reporting that Beyonce is currently the top choice to voice Nala.
I've been hearing rumors that Simba will be gay in the new movie. I've only heard about it on April 1, so I'm not sure if it's true or not.
EDIT: Turns out, it was an April Fools' Joke.

The pride has lost both kings it once had.
But there's hope for a new generation of lions, with a new king who will give—
Simba then announces he's gay, actually.
I'd gladly pay to watch that movie.
With Donald Glover playing Simba, James Earl Jones returning as Mufasa, and Beyonce being considered for Nala, I wonder if they're going for an all black, or at least predominantly black, cast for this movie.
I'd be fine with that.
It makes sense in the context of the story.
Wonder if Nala is going to get a song if they are looking into hiring a singer for her voice actress.
Doesn't Adult Nala have some kind of song in Broadway?
Yep. It's called Shadowland, the chorus has the tune that was playing when Simba is looking at the state of the pridelands right before Nala and the others join him. It's an alright song.
I'm pretty sure the musical had a lot of song material taken from "The Rhythm of The Pridelands" album the cast and crew put together after the movie. I wonder if the new movie will as well.

Meet the next Timon and Pumbaa!
...I'm honestly not sure what to think of this.
This would be the first time Pumbaa has ever not been voiced by Ernie Sabella, right? Not counting Broadway, of course.
In any case, this is a really interesting (as in "peculiar") choice in casting, ain't it?
EDIT: I barely saw Parks & Recreation, so I haven't the faintest idea what to expect from the guy voicing Timon.

It's funny because I was literally just thinking about whether they would get Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella back or use new people. Guess I have my answer now.
It'll be interesting to see their takes on the characters.
