This is really more of a Super-Trope, and the page would be better served if designed more as one, listing it's various Sub Tropes, which include well-known ones such as Xanatos Gambit and Batman Gambit.
Listing examples should be limited to cases where the example doesn't qualify as any more specific trope.
I don't propose nuking it, because it's definitely a valid concept to have here; contests of intelligence, manipulation and deception, a description which applies to a great many tropes we have. Here's what I think we can do:
1. Collate a nice long list of subtropes
2. Set it up as an index for those tropes listed, including character archetypes who specialise in this such as Guile Hero and Manipulative Bastard
3. Nix any example already covered by the various subtropes, and keep the ones that aren't
4. Simplify the description to better establish that this is a super trope, and doesn't need to mentioned on works pages, unless none of the subtropes adequately describe the example
5. Reference this on its well-known subtropes
6. Case by case basis, mention it on works where it is a central part of the plot, such as Death Note's showdown between Kira and L.
Also, needs a good image - see the appropriate forum for that.
