The Copy-Paste Cleanup Thread

Go To

Apparently some people find it easier to copy-paste text from other sources, including Wikipedia or the creator's original site, instead of coming up with their own text.

However, this could get the website in a ton of legal trouble for plagiarism and/or copyright violations. (Not to mention it's lazy writing to boot.) Since stopping that problem is a very high priority, and I've observed multiple cases of this problem as of late, let's give this its own dedicated clean-up thread. If you see any work, character, or recap descriptions that copy another source word-for-word, bring them up here if you're not sure how to immediately fix them.

Below is a list of currently known pages that suffer from this problem, and the source they copy from. (This list can be updated by mods or by me, Totemic Hero.) The ideal goal is to have these pages fixed within a week or two of finding out about the copy-paste. If we can't manage to come up with a fix in that time frame, then we'll probably have to outright Cut List said pages, because the site can't risk legal issues.

@Playing_with_boy: Except that you're not supposed to that either. Work descriptions are expected to be original write-ups, created specifically for this wiki.

Yeah, it was sarcasm.

So @Totemic Hero, you get the point of what I was saying even though you thought you didn't.

Somebody posted an entire episode transcript in Quotes.RWBY (Volume 6 folder), which I'm pretty sure is a no-no.

Characters.Paladins copies character descriptions from in-game.

I and You seems to have its description copied from Playscripts (and has some unrelated problems with ZCEs). I've been working on a draft for the page on Sandbox.Orbiting, as I didn't know there already was one; would it be okay if I transplanted my description and examples onto the existing page?

I found an Analysis subpage for Pokemon Generation I Families that was created quite a few years ago. It talks about the controversy regarding the what the Pokemon Jynx is based on, but it's taken word-for-word from a column written for Bulbapedia.

What's odd was that the column was already a few years old at that point. So the page references a "recent" trailer for Pokémon Black and White... when Pokémon X and Y was only a few months away.

So, permission to cut?

Considering that we want original write-ups for Analysis pages, coupled with the lack of attribution (which is a MAJOR no-no)...yeah, cutlist that page.

VideoGame.Oracle Of Askigaga had a copy-paste description from the game's page...

Now I've changed it. A lot shorter, but at least it's not a copy-paste.

I want to report Characters.Dead By Daylight. I noticed a week and a half ago that all the character description text was basically ripped from the in-game lore pages (which can also be seen on the Dead by Daylight wikia).

Once it clicked that for me what was going on, I reported it to Ask the Tropers, mentioned it in Discussion, and even posted in the main DBD forum thread.

I've yanked that text (you can see it in the edit history) and created Sandbox.Dead By Daylight to re-write the character descriptions in more of a "in our own words" sense, but I haven't really found time to do more than about three or so and nobody has responded anywhere but ATT, so I wanted to report it here both to make sure it's "on the record" and see if I can get any aid here, too.

Plus, remember how in Eragon everyone cries "a single tear"? Yeah, just try that with One Piece and see if it works

Most of the descriptions at Characters.Mr Men seem to be copy-pasted.

Btw, I just found the plagiarized description in Ciconia: When They Cry in Ask The Tropers and replace it. Here's what it looked right now:

"This Visual Novel is set after World War 3 with the world nearly escaping its nuclear winter as mankind developed an ultimate military technology, better known as The Gauntlet, which granted the people using it fly like a fighter jets, battling its opponents like the battleship or driving off the opponent attacks without additional equipment. The users of the Gauntlet requires a special training from the very young age in order to mastering them and said individual that are capable of mastering them are better known as the "Gauntlet Knights".

The main characters of Ciconia will be focused on the Young Gauntlet Knights who, after participating in a peaceful competition in the International Battle Standard Festival, become best friends together and vowing themselves to stop the upcoming World War that will happen in the future. Unfortunately, there are several events that will trigger another catastrophic war that will happen like a game of chess and these "main characters" are nothing but the Unwitting Pawn of the global games that shady people with hidden agendas play. Will these main characters be compelled by these people to murder each other? Or can this catastrophic tragedy be prevented by these main characters who are our only hope despite being an Unwitting Pawn of a bigger fish?"

Here's the sentence that is plagiarized:

"World War 3 has come and gone, with nuclear winter only narrowly avoided with cutting-edge technology leading to the development of a new ultimate military technology, the Gauntlet, which allows those wielding one to fly like fighter jets, fight like battleships, and repel attacks like tanks without any additional equipment. The Gauntlets require particular talent and special training administered from a young age in order to control, and the young boys and girls capable of mastering of them become known as Gauntlet Knights. The main characters of Ciconia will be a group of these young Gauntlet Knights who, after the peaceful competition in the International Battle Standard Festival, become fast friends vowing to prevent world war together. However, world events are leading directly to World War 4 like a cascading row of dominos, and these “main characters” are nothing but pawns in the global games played by those with a right to sit at the table. Will these youth be forced to murder each other? Can the tragedy of war be prevented by mere pawns? Who are the real players in these games, and will you, the fans of When They Cry, fight for your seat at this deadly game?"

Any issues on the updated description? Sorry for my poor grammar btw as I want to atone myself ever since The Alchemist Code incident tongue
