Godzilla Anime Movie (2017): Written by Gen "Urobutcher" Urobuchi himself

There’s a theory that’s popped up that Urobuchi wrote a really good 100 page script (so, normal movie length) with two amazing act transitions, and then the executives decided to split each act into it’s own movie, using the transitions as the big finales for the first two movies.

Mostly sounds plausible, but I'd expect the original script to be on the large side— More likely that the execs would want to split it, and I don't think this film is that empty

[up] Well this version has had a lot of opportunities to level grind in 20k years.

I can see the reveal that Godzilla has become the Planet itself, and all the Godzillas on the surface are just Avatars of the OG himself.

Just finished watching this. I really enjoyed it, though I kept thinking of Fire Emblem jokes mostly because quite a few of the cast members have done voice work in the 3DS games and the character designer is Yusuke Kozaki.

The part where the real Godzilla wakes up is awesome. I'd love to see the reactions of people who went into this blind.

I just finished watching it. And for those complaining that the first half was no action. Well, yeah, that's how almost all the Godzilla movies go. It's just following the formula. I was wondering if that brief glimpse of a humanoid figure flitting through the forest was going to get expanded upon, and it seems like that's gonna be for the next movie. And boy, oh boy, that last ten minutes. Just like Urobuchi. Give us a nice little triumphant moment, a hope spot, then slowly start building up some hesitation, some unease, then BAM.

I love how the original is almost three times taller than any previous Godzilla to date. Which, going by Square-Cube Law, means it's bigger than all previous Godzillas combined.

EDIT: Also, can someone go through the page for this movie and do some editing? There's some serious bias going on there that would be better under YMMV.

Watched it, I really enjoyed myself but by god, other parts of the Internet aren't taking it well. Looking back, I can't blame them. Characters had no personality, there were multiple pointless conversations, cut framerate removes all of the animation's competence. Still fun and has a great sense of tension and mystery but these problems can't be ignored.

The YMMV page needs a LOT of work.

This is all awfully accurate. [lol] (though as noted in the comments, it didn't seem to me like the film had any "hype" to live up to)

Most of the "hype" is probably solely from the fact that Urobuchi wrote it. And while I also have some criticisms about the visuals, the complaints they have about Godzilla fell flat for me. I mean, did they forget that the original incarnation was a dude in a rubber suit, and that the majority of the movies have been faithfully paying homage to that? He doesn't look that bad at all, especially considering that this incarnation is some sort of plant-like organism rather than a mutant lizard. The dragon-things did look pretty bad, though.

Also, why do people always complain about grey color palettes? Yes, it's boring to look at, but look at them. They're refugees floating through space waiting to die from lack of resources. You think they're gonna waste effort painting things to make them look bright and cheerful? The whole thing paints a picture of soulless utilitarianism and efficiency, bleakness and hopelessness, and I think it fits the general mood of the humanoid survivors well.

This movie felt uneven as hell. Like, there are some amazing ideas and scenes, but I didn't like the pacing, the plot sometimes felt jagged, and most of the characters were flat and boring to the point I have a problem telling some of them apart.

And the hell is with that ending? Did they seriously play the "that monster was just a baby and here comes his mommy to kick your ass" cliche, completely straight? And the fact that after a whole movie about killing Godzilla it then goes "nope, everyone dies after all" is so Urobuchi, it feels like self-parody

The stinger is.... eh, at least it explains that one scene earlier I guess.

All in all, it was not a bad movie, but definitely not nearly as good as I expected it to be.

[up]I don't think we actually have confirmation that everyone else dies, as far as I know.

So I didn't get very far into this before I stopped (was watching it with my bro and he lost interest pretty quickly).

I read about the rest of the story on This Very Wiki:

So essentially, the hero is a selfish asshole who prioritizes his revenge over all else and a lot of people die because of it, all for a plan that had no hope of succeeding?

Am I right?

Not... really. I mean, that's all present in him, but it's not a fair assessment of his character. Also, it did work, even after everything went to hell. But their tunnel vision prevented them from seeing the bigger picture.

Well, the YMMV page for the movie and some other parts don't paint him in a good light to be honest.

It's YMMV for a reason. I mean, I certainly didn't like him, but I'm pretty sure there's some cultural stuff going on that's preventing me from understanding how he's supposed to come off. There was definitely more to his motivations than just revenge.

Well part of this is this is only Part 1 of 3. Honestly, it's a mistake to look at this like a standalone movie. Treat it as the first episode in a three episode miniseries and I think it holds up better. Because we've only just finished the first act where the characters and situations. The second and third acts are where the meat of the character development usually is.

The YMMV page feels like it was written by one person with a very specific view they want to push.

[up]Yeah, if it was a standalone movie, it would honestly be kind of subpar, but as a first part of a series, it holds out better.

The thing is, the entire human race was dying a slow death, wasting away in space, so dedicating a small task force to try to eliminate Godzilla as a kind of last hurrah of humanity was a good morale maneuver, even if it didn't work, which it did. Quite effectively, in fact. Final moments notwithstanding, since a possibility like that was outside of everyone's wildest speculations.

[up][up][up] & [up][up]

I've seen that view expressed in multiple places. I think part of the problem is we may be running into a case of trilogy vs serial. A lot of people seem to be approaching this as a "trilogy". Three individual works, that while connected and the plot stretches across them, are meant to work as stand alone pieces as well. Where as a serial, though movie length, each part is more of an episode of a larger work. And while Japan seems to have brought the concept back (Kara no Kyoukai, the Live Action Patlabor, the Yamato'' reboot and so on) it hasn't really caught on again elsewhere

Part 2 is out. It's... better. Still about twice as long as it needs to be with lots of redundant expositions, but it involves some interesting concepts and there's more plot movement
