-Man, this game loves options, doesn't it?-

-There are now three buttons across both touchscreens now that you've chosen experimental airframes-

  • rogue ii - experimental fighter - The "Future Of The Aeroforce", the Rogue II focuses around cluster weapons. If you liked the Rogue, you'll love the Rogue II - it's the Rogue, but more! Just be careful - while the Rogue II outpaces her sibling in nearly every way, her larger airframe is less tolerant of incoming damage.
  • aurora - experimental interceptor - A black project no more, the Aurora is proof positive that what you don't know can hurt you. The Rogue of interceptors, with good maneuverability, high speed, and excellent durability, the Aurora packs mostly energy weapons.
  • odin - experimental bomber - BRRRRRRRRRRRT! A ground attack fighter built around an impressively destructive Hyper Vulkan, the Odin is the Kondor, but more! Better maneuverability combined with powerful weapons lets you lay waste to all you see before you. And don't write off the Hyper Vulkan - it's surprisingly capable!

-After you press the option, a strange, Dorito-like fighter wheels itself out onto the flight deck. You can hear the dull whine of its jet engines at low power, though they are not immediately apparent-

-Next to it, the four weapons the Aurora uses are displayed as you find you are free to use your flightstick to look around and inspect the fighter-

  • gun: blaster - Rapid-fire energy blaster with limited lock-on capability. Much slower to fire than other aircraft cannons, but deals significantly increased damage. Can lock all targets.
  • micro: itano - Short-range homing cluster missile, fired two at a time. Splits into six mini-warheads after launch; two will pursue locked target. Remaining six will travel to any nearby targets in range. Can lock all targets.
  • air-to-air 1: thunder beam - Linear cannon firing focused laser beam. No travel time. Best kept on target for massive damage. Must be manually aimed.
  • air-to-air 2: circus - The ultimate air-to-air weapon; a long-range homing cluster missile with omnidirectional lock-on. Splits into eight mini-warheads after launch; two will pursue locked target. Remaining six will travel to any nearby targets on radar. Can only lock air targets.

-The touchscreen offers a back button if you don't like the Aurora. In the meanwhile, below it, press fire to lock selection is displayed, if this is your choice-

-A few seconds after you lock your choice, Oliver locks his too, and the carrier disappears for a moment... before being replaced with a wireframe map of what looks like a random type of continent, with defenses in red and attackers in blue-

-There's also a loading icon. It's pretty clear what this screen is really for-

???: I hope you enjoyed your R&R, Wendigo Squadron. With the effort you've expended to defend our shores from the aggressors at our gates, you've earned it. But as I'm sure you're painfully aware, it's no longer enough to simply defend. We must strike out if we wish to survive the coming storm.

We've always known the Crimson State desired our resources, and that despite their appaling human rights record and disdain for outsiders, they have avoided collateral damage or countervalue strikes. A dead workforce is not one that can be enslaved... at least, not yet. But it seems in catching the Lovers by surprise and shooting down the paratroopers intending to capture Cheliopolis, we have finally shoved one too many splinters underneath their fingernails.

-An image is shown of a beautiful city, replete with skyscrapers, harbors, a magnificent forest, and hot air balloons in the sky... before a flash vaporizes it-

Oliver: Man. Really laying the cheese on thick there, are they?

-The loading is finished. In the corner; hold fire to skip, if that is your persuasion. Doesn't seem like Ollie's-

???: As you are well aware, at 4:22 AM last night the city of Amelia was obliterated by an unknown weapon. We've scrambled Falkes retrofitted with recon gear to the area, but they have not yet reported survivors. Just burned ruins.

Amelia was a hub of art and culture. Twenty-two million lived there. It offered no resources, no factories, and nothing of use to the Crimson State. Nothing even of note - no attack in the past 30 years has ever hit Amelia.

At present, the presumption is that everyone that lived there is dead. We will have full NBC teams on the ground within a few hours to confirm this... but we are expecting the worst.

Oliver: I guess so. You do need a reason to go and shoot stuff, huh?

-For those not currently in the pods, there is a screen where you can watch the action... and, of course, two of them are vacant. There's still a chance to hop in, for the moment-

???: Fortunately, we have a lead on the perpetrator. Amelia's local Aerolab was relatively small, but carried the same hardened emergency research transmitters most others do, and they were able to broadcast - among other files - radio transmissions picked up by automated systems shortly before the destruction of the city. Radio transmissions ciphered in heavy Crimson State encryption.

About an hour ago the LOTUS Group handed us the Blossom supercomputer's decryption results.

-A deck of playing cards that may seem very familiar to Asagi appears-

As you know, the Crimson State's enforcers - both at home, and abroad - are a set of extremely well-trained royalty caste pilots referred to as the Major Arcana. Tarot Wing. Based on previous transmissions we assumed that they were merely 22 extremely well-trained pilots with heavily customized aircraft. Unfortunately, however, we were as wrong in that guess as the Crimson State was for thinking them invincible, considering your squadron alone has four confirmed Arcana kills.

-The first seven tarot cards X out-

The attack on Amelia was deliberate. It was revenge for killing the Arcana. It was a statement of intent that it is no longer enough for the Crimson State to subjugate us - they plan to completely eradicate us. Kill us all, raze our cities, revoke all references. Damnatio memorae. And the weapon they used to fire this opening shot was Tarot 19 - The Sun. Not just a pilot, but a squadron of ace pilots guarding a weapon of unimaginable destructive power.

Oliver: Might be.

-Well, Quartz, the touchscreen presents you with the same options Oliver and Asagi got. But the briefing is still playing, so you had better choose fast if you don't want to spectate-

???: So now you know the score. Time for your orders.

-The various air wings on the tactical map begin advancing into red space-

High Command has just approved the Anubis Offensive. 70% of the Aeroforce is going to be taking part in the first offensive operation since the Great War, to clear the way for our army. We are going to advance all the way to the Crimson State capital and depose their leadership. And you will be supporting us with missions too dangerous for other pilots to take on.

-The map proceeds to zoom in on a small valley, with a research complex labeled in the valley-

-Given the cramped space, it's a surprise the system can give these descriptions to you, but it manages-

  • kondor - light bomber - An excellent ground attack fighter, while the Kondor lacks the serious bombing capability of its bigger brothers, it has enough payload to smash most ground targets while retaining enough maneuverability to pose a threat to fighters who think they've got an easy kill.
  • zulu - medium bomber - The aeroforce's first choice of strategic bomber, if it needs to be smashed, the Zulu can smash it. Quicker than you think it is, the Zulu nevertheless carries enough ordinance to destroy nearly anything it can see on the ground!
  • oni - swing-wing bomber - Listed as a "high-speed tactical strike fighter", the Oni doesn't have the raw impact of the Zulu or the maneuverability of the Kondor. What it does have, however, is blistering speed and weapons well-suited to using it. Dive at your targets, release your ordinance, and pull up before the blast!
  • medved - heavy bomber - Stupidly and impractically large by even the Aeroforce's warped standards of what makes good airframes, the Medved is THE last word in bombing. If you need to guarantee that the target and everything surrounding it is obliterated, accept no substitutes. Comes with four autoturrets, free - there's no way in hell you're dodging anything in this.

???: Intelligence from long-term Crimson State spies indicates that Research Complex 742 contains massive amounts of actionable intelligence about The Sun - what it is, recommended use doctrines and deployment areas, and defensive strategies. The Anubis Offensive will save us eventually, but it's all for naught if the Sun blows up Glass Lake and decapitates our government. Wendigo Squadron, you will be deployed to raid this station and destroy its anti-air defenses and air complement to clear the way for two squads of Hussars to clear the base and retrieve its data.

Defenses appear to be light, nothing like the air defenses surrounding Neo-Citadel. Deceptively so, for a superweapon development station. It is likely the Crimson State is trying to lure you into a trap, and they have one or more Major Arcana on standby to intercept you. Still, we need that information about the Sun.

Oliver: It did say this was an arcade edition. Maybe they've got something for home use? We might have to go check the game store after this.

Oliver: It might be. Could just be an arcade game with a very involved cockpit, too.

-As the briefing is ongoing, you get a single picture of the Medved rather than a full 3D display on the left side of the touchscreen. The right displays your weapons, and a 'CONFIRM' or 'DENY' option-

  • self-defense - meteor - Short-range omnidirectional supermaneuverable missile. Practically impossible to dodge without countermeasures. Moderate damage, all things considered. Can only lock air targets.
  • air-to-ground 1 - warhammer - Unguided bomb. Use the Bombsight view on your info screen to aim it. No frills, no quirks - just a whole lot of boom in one package. The standard by which other bombs are compared.
  • air-to-ground 2 - yumi - Precision guided bomb, aimed like a missile. Semi-active lock-on; lock must be maintained until the Yumi reaches its target. Splash radius is minimal, but direct damage is massive. Can only lock ground targets.
  • air-to-ground 3 - basilisk - The king of bombs. Use the Bombsight view on your info screen to aim it, not that you need to. Absolutely barbaric direct and splash damage, and extreme splash radius - a near-miss will still glass everything around your target, plus the target itself. Be careful not to destroy mission targets by accident, and don't drop this at low altitude!

???: You'll be receiving the support of the 45th Tactical Fighter Wing for this; they will be deploying a squadron of Vectors and Raijus to act as air support. We're counting on you, Wendigo. Get it done.

-Once you've all confirmed, the scene changes again-

-The sky is blue, and it seems clear. You're on the deck of the carrier again, but this time you're clearly in launch position and there are people scampering all over the flight deck-

-There is now a simple HUD being projected on the cockpit glass. Just altitude, airspeed, your current health, and weapon status. Asagi sees a fairly large circle, the lock-on indicator for her standard cluster missile; Quartz merely sees a dot-

-The left side of the console is displaying the same info as the HUD; the right side, however, is displaying air radar-

-Asagi has a clear view of the sky ahead; however, Quartz would see Asagi's fighter as well as something else in front of him on the flight deck-

-An icon of the carrier appears in the corner of the cockpit canopy-

Santiago: Wendigo Squadron, we have entered the operational area. Research Complex 742 is fifty kilometres ahead. This is your stop.

Wendigo 1, you are clear for launch.

-Asagi sees a prompt appear above her HUD; push throttle to max to launch-

"Seven is here too, dressed like the concept of choosing clothes that look nice together was an arcane secret far beyond their grasp."
