Naomi: We... weren't exactly so lucky.
We managed to contain the damage, but only after barely preventing total ecological collapse, cementing the Holocene extinction, and losing... a lot of people to extreme weather, skirmishes over resources and arable land... We only have estimates. A lot of things fell apart in the Near-Collapse and we won't ever get a set-in-stone estimate of the casualties.
"Seven is here too, dressed like the concept of choosing clothes that look nice together was an arcane secret far beyond their grasp."Naomi: Losing two or three billion people does that to you.
There was still quite a bit of fighting - with guns and words - after the dust had settled, mostly because a lot of people weren't willing to face the reality of the situation. It was probably the single darkest point in history.
But I like to think that we've come very far since then.
-to Einar- Nope! We're multi-planetary. We haven't spread out to very many star systems, I think our farthest is just 20 light-years or so away from Sol? But we've colonized every planetoid in the Solar System in some way, and many beyond!

"Seven is here too, dressed like the concept of choosing clothes that look nice together was an arcane secret far beyond their grasp."Naomi: We haven't had much war since the Near-Collapse. At first it was because people were tired of fighting, but eventually we always had it to look back to. People hate using it as a cudgel, but it's a good... reference point, I guess.
UNSN?
"Seven is here too, dressed like the concept of choosing clothes that look nice together was an arcane secret far beyond their grasp."Naomi: It did help a lot too in mine! But that was after the Near-Collapse. The UN dissolved during it, but everyone reformed it afterwards and it actually seemed to stick.
The multiverse is what killed it.
"Seven is here too, dressed like the concept of choosing clothes that look nice together was an arcane secret far beyond their grasp."Naomi: Well... the multiverse meant that our universe was technically considered an entity in and of itself. Everyone who would look in wouldn't see the United Nations and its member states, they would just see humanity.
Humanity decided that it actually had to unite. Obviously not forgetting the contributions of nations, but in the face of the incalculable expanse we deemed we had to become a single entity that didn't just stand together, but was together. No divisions. Just mankind.

"Seven is here too, dressed like the concept of choosing clothes that look nice together was an arcane secret far beyond their grasp."Naomi: When it does, I hope you guys do it smoothly.
The United Nations is fondly remembered for what it did, but now we're all part of the Orion Republic.
It took a few years to decide on that name.

Naomi: -to Claire- We didn't treat climate change seriously until it almost killed us.
